This is #17 of a series based on the famous Vividh Bharathi radio program
"Chhaya Geet" in which songs based on a particular theme are played. Chhaya
Geet is usually posted on Wednesdays on RMIM.
This series serves to corroborate the "Naushad fan postulate" which states
that for every REAL life situation, there exists atleast one REAL song which
can be sung in your IMAGINARY world ! :-) This series is also a small tribute
to my favourite Vividh Bharathi announcer and Chhaya Geet hostess Kanta Gupta.
CHHAYA GEET #17
TODAY'S SITUATION/THEME: If you are an average desi student in the US who is
single, I'm sure u suffer from occasional bouts of Tanhaai, ie. loneliness.
Despite being in the constant company of friends, the following lines of
Neeraj in the song "Phoolon ke rang se...." seem so very true:
"Lamba safar ho
Chhota safar ho
Sooni dagar ho ya mela
Yaad tu aae, dil ho jaae
BheeRh ke beech akela....."
Yes, one does feel "BheeRh ke beech akela" at times. Here are some songs on the
theme Tanhaai or loneliness.
Sami Mohammed (A Naushad fan).......saathi hai to mera saaya.
1. Sab ke rehte, lagta hai jaise
Koi nahin hai mera
Koi nahin hai mera...............................................(Rafi)
2. Kiska rasta dekhen
Ai dil ai saudaee
Milon hai KHamoshi
Barson hai tanhaai
Bhuli duniya mujhe bhi
Tujhe bhi bhoolegi (?)
Phir kyun aankh bhar aaee
Ho, kiska rasta dekhen
Ai dil ai saudaee.................................................(KK)
3. Saathi na koi manzil
Diya hai na koi mehfil
Chala mujhe leke ai dil
Akela kahan
Saathi na koi manzil...............................................(Rafi)
4. Phir wohi shaam, wohi GHam, wohi tanhaai hai
Dil ko samjhane teri yaad chali aaee hai
Phir wohi shaam.............................................(Talat Mehmood)
5. BaRi sooni sooni hai
Zindagi ye zindagi
Main KHud se hun yahan
Ajnabi, ajnabi
BaRi sooni sooni hai................................................(Rafi)
6. Tum na jaane kis jahan me kho gae
Hum bhari duniya me tanha ho gae
Tum na jaane kis jahan me kho gae...................................(Lata)
7. Chand tanha hai, aasmaan tanha
Dil mera hai, kahan kahan tanha..............................(Meena Kumari)

Sandeep. :-) /* still trying to crack the RD quiz */
1. So gaya yeh jahan, so gaya aasman (Nitin Muk, Tezaab)
2. Shaam-e-gam ki Kasam aaj gamgeen hain hum
aa bhi aa bhi ja aaj mere sanam, Shaam- ..
(my favorite)
... ab to aaja ke ab raat bhi so gayee
zindagi gum ke viraney kho gayee (Talat)
3. Raat ne kya kya khwad dikhaye (Talat)
Talat is the stud who just stands under a tree and expresses his grief
to himself and only himself. He does not need to share it w/ anyone,
does not believe in protesting to anyone, but is content w/ listening to
himself.

Aapki theme hame bahut pasand aayi. I was thinking about it all evening
yesterday. I came up with a few more songs which might fit in. Besides, I
thought, there are times when you feel the 'tanhai' but you aren't necessarily
sad. Spring is here, how can anybody be outdoors looking at life smiling at
him and still be gham-geen (if that is the right word).
Also, another class of songs would be for the type who are physically
single (i.e. fiance/fiancee/beloved in India type).
Here are some of the songs I came up with :
*** the sad type -
akela hoon main, is duniya me,
saathi hai koi to mera saaya,
akela hoon main ...
o door ke musafir, hamko bhi saath le le
hamko bhi saath le le, ham rah gaye akele ...
*** the not-so-sad type -
pukaarta chala hun main,
gali gali bahaar ki,
wo ek tchaav zulf ki,
wo ek nigaah pyaar ki ...
apni to har aah ek toofan hai
oopar waala jaan kar anjaan hai ...
kabhi to milegi, kaheen to milegi
bahaaron ki manzil raahi ...
tu kahaan ye bata,
is nasheeli raat me,
maane na mera dil deewana ...
aawaara, ae mere dil,
jaane kahaan hai, teri manzil ...
bole re papihara, papihara
nit ghan barase, nit man pyaasa ...
hum intazaar karenge, tera qayamat tak,
khuda kare ki qayamat ho, aur tu aaye ...
*** and for those saddened by pangs of separation -
jaari jaari o kaari badariya,
mat barso re meri nagariya,
pardes gaye hain sawariya ...
aa ja re, pardesi,
main to kabse khadi is paar,
ye aankhiyaa thak gayi panth nihaar
aa ja re ...
ek pardesi mera dil le gaya,
jaate jaate mitha mitha gam de gaya ...
* (and those irrational unfounded fears of the mind )
pardes jaa ke pardesiya,
bhool na jaana piya ...
pardesiyon se na, ankhiyaa milaana,
pardesiyon ko hai, ek din jaana ...
* (can letters or photographs help the situation ?)
jo baat tujhme hai,
teri tasveer me nahi ...
afsaana likh rahi hoon,
tere intazaar ka,
aakhon me rang bhar ke,
dil-ae-beqaraar ka ...
tasveer teri dil mera bahla na sakegi,
ye teri tarah mujhse to sharama na sakegi ...
* (the same tanhaai again but in a different taste)
jhoomti chali hawa,
yaad aa gaya koi,
boojhti boojhti aag ko,
phir jala gaya koi ...
mausam hai aashiqana,
ae dil kahi se unko,
aise me dhoondh laana ...
na jaane kyun, hota hai ye zindagi ke saath,
achanak ye man, kisi ke jaane ke baad,
karta hai uski yaad, tchoti tchoti si baat,
na jaane kyun ...
and ultimately one of my absolute favorites -
tere bina zindagi se koi,
shikawa to nahi,
teri bina zindagi bhi lekin,
zindagi to nahi ....
Manish

hai preet jahaan ki reet sada .....
' ye tanhaiee ye aaye phir na ayee..
tham le bahen...' - 'tere ghar ke saamne'
I think this song is also appropriate to the theme above..
Hope that helps...

> 7. Chand tanha hai, aasmaan tanha

Incidently there is another song very similar to the above.. It goes
something like this..
Chaand gagan mein hai tanhaa,
Woh bhi tanhaa, main bhi tanhaa,
Saaraa aalam hai tanhaa tanhaa..
Can anybody post the entire lyrics of this song?
I cannot resist posting this beautiful ghazal sung by Mehdi Hassan in the
same context.
Tanhaa tanhaa mat sochaa kar,
Mar jaayegaa, mat sochaa kar.
Pyaar ghaDi-bhar kaa hi bohot hai,
JhuuTha, sacchaa, mat sochaa kar,
Tanhaa tanhaa mat sochaa kar.
Dhuup mein tanhaa jab jaataa hai,
Kyun yeh saayaa, mat sochaa kar,
Tanhaa tanhaa mat sochaa kar.
Jiski fitrat hi Dasnaa ho,
Woh to Dasegaa, mat sochaa kar,
Tanhaa tanhaa mat sochaa kar,
Mar jaayegaa, mat sochaa kar.....
Extremely powerful thoughts in very simple language. Great poetry!

Koi hum dum na raha.. koi sahara na raha
Hum kisike ne rahe - koi hamara na raha ...
Not so sad one :
Main aur meri tanhai - aksaar yeh baaten karte hein...
Thank u!

Whether it is spring or not, dil kabhi kabhi taRapta hai
"Tu nahin to ye bahaar kya bahaar hai
Gul nahin khile to tera intezaar hai.."
But, I do understand ur point. There can be tanhaai without GHam.
> Also, another class of songs would be for the type who are physically

Hey, u robbed me of a cGeet theme :-) This wud be tanhaai due to judaai!
Maar gaaee mujhe teri judaai, Dass gaee ye tanhaai
Teri yaad aaee aur aankhon me neend nahin aaee
Karwaten badalte rahe saari raat hum, aap ki qasam (2)
GHam na karo din judaai ke bahut hai kam, aap ki qasam

I liked the above category best. Tanhaai/yaad/judaai/intezaar are so inter-related. Here are songs for people about to get separated
(not the legal separation :-) )
Mujhe tum yaad karna aur mujhko yaada aana tum
Main ek din lautke aaunga ye mat bhool jaana tum
Hum tumse juda hoke, mar jaenge ro ro ke
Jo tum chale jaoge to yaad bahut aaoge
Jaane se pehle meri ek baat sunte jaana (?)
Aaj mujhe tum apni tasveer dete jaana (This can be included in the photo
category too)
There are many more.......
