Hi guys. Asha is coming here in USA for her live concerts. The first
concert is on Fri 14th August 1998 at 8.30 pm at Baker Hall, Zoellner
Arts Center, Leigh University, Bethlehem, PA 18015. Details on
www.bharat.net

This reminds me of the Asha Bhosale live Marathi concert 'Nakshatranche
Dene' I had enjoyed two years back. Her Hindi concerts are well known,
but many of you might not be knowing about Asha's concert in Marathi,
her own mother tongue. I thought I would share my experience. I am sorry
if this has been discussed before on RMIM. This is a recollection from
memory. Please correct me if I make some erroneous statements.

The date, somewhere around October 1996. The place Vile Parle, Mumbai.
It was an open air concert at the Parle Tilak Vidyalaya grounds. The
audience was the typical theatre and art loving Maharshtrian crowd. I
need not mention that the show was a sell-out. The crowd had started
trickling in hours before the show started. Soon the ground was full,
infact I thought it was over crowded, because there were people standing
at the sides. I also saw people peeping and listening over the compound
walls. Even the surrounding buildings had people in windows and on
terraces. The atmosphere was just great.

The first performance of 'Nakshatranche Dene' was already held some more
years back. (Can somebody throw more light on this ?). It has been
recorded and is available as a set of 2 cassettes titled 'Nakshatranche
Dene' (a must buy). I dont know if a CD version is available.

This was the second performance of the show. It was an occasion on the
Punyatithi (death anniversary) of the late Dinanth Mangeshkar. There
were many prominent Marathi artists present in the audience. Lata and
Hridaynath were also present. I was seated in the tenth row and it was
the first time I was seeing Lata and Asha in person. So you can imagine
the immense joy I was experiencing !
(Few months later I was to witness Lata in the biggest show of all
times, Lata Live at Andheri Sports Complex, Mumbai on 7th March 1997.
More on that some other time. I feel really great of having the
privilege of listening to both Lata and Asha live)

The show started. The evergreen, voluble and by far the most popular
Marathi comperer of all times, Sudhir Gadgil came on stage. After an
introduction in his characteristic style, he called Asha on stage amidst
a thundering applause. Asha looked grand in a bluish color saree. Asha
has the ability of sharing a great rapport with the crowd and in no time
it was as if she was chatting with the audience.

Then she started with 'Maage ubha Mangesha' and after that I seemed to
have forgotten all my tensions and problems in life !
She sang some great Marathi all time hit tunes composed by Hridaynath.
(Pity there is no such music nowadays.)
Here are the songs she sang
1. Maage ubha Mangesha, pudhe ubha Mangesha.
She always starts with this song which refers to Lord Mangesh (Shiva)
(Mangeshkars name is derived from the God's name). The song from the
movie 'Mahananda' describes Lord Mangesh and suggests that he is always
present around us. Great song, sung beautifully by Asha. Dearly loved by
all Maharashtrians, especially by all those having Lord Mangesh as their
diety.

2. Ye re ghana.
A call to the rains and clouds. Beautiful in-between music.

3. Reshama chya reghan ni...Haath naka lavu maazya saadi la
'Assal'(True, perfect) Laavani, with superb dhol at the start. She
also told the story of how Lata had called her in her room and sang this
Laavani in a softer style and asked Ashas opinion on it. She actually
showed Lata's style of singing it.

4. Hi vaat doora jaate
The path of your dreams.

5. Chandanyat phirtana
A lovable love song.

6. Nabha utaru aala
The rains have started pouring.

7. Gele dyayche rahuna, tuze nakshatranche dene

8. Chandane shimpita jaati chalata tu chanchale
The first song by Asha for Hridaynath.
Asha spoke about lyrics in songs nowadays. She said in those days too
there were lyrics like 'Pahude meghavina saundarya tuze mokale', but
they were charming and not like the harsh, suggestive lyrics written
nowadays.

9. Me majza harapuna basale ga
Conversion by Hridaynath of 'Suhaasya tuze malasa mohe' sung by his
father way back in 1935 in a film. Asha was born around that time.

10. Taruna aahe ratra ajuni
According to Asha the most difficult song for her, composed by
Hridaynath. It scales a wide range of frequencies and goes to a very
high pitch in the stanza 'Bagha tula pusatosa aahe paschimecha gara
vaara'.

11. Kevha tari pahate, ulatuna ratra geli.
Asha's favourite.

12. Jeevalaga, rahile re doora ghara maaze
The speciality of this song is that its continuous, without a break.
Asha told the story releted to the song. At the time of recording, due
to some reasons, there were no musicians. So there was a problem of
in-between music. Hridaynath decided to go ahead and record the song
with Asha singing without a break, without in-between music and with
minimum music companions. The result is beautiful. My personal
favourite, though its really difficult to decide which song is better.
All of them vie for the top spot.

14. Gomu sangati na, maazjya tu yeshil kaay (She sang this duet with
some artist)

15. Zambhul piklya zhada khaali, dhol kunacha vajati

16. Kanadahu Vitthalu
Sant Dnyaneshwar's Abhang.

17. Shoor aamhi vandile.
18. Paravashata parshadaive
19. Divya swatantra ravi
(17,18,19 Patriotic songs)

20. Ushah kaal hota hota, kaala ratra zhaali
(The list is not complete. Does anybody know any other songs I have
missed ? )

All of the above songs have that characteristic stamp of Asha. Many are
classical based and Asha was just flawless. I personally found her live
renditions better than her originals. Also I think Asha is at her best
when singing in Marathi.

Asha took only one rest break in between the program. Hridaynath took
over the stage then, and entertained the audience with some of his other
songs, like 'Manasi cha chitrakar to', 'Tu tevha tashi', my personal
favourite being 'Maalavuna taaka deep' originally sung by Lata.

Asha is always in a jovial mood at concerts and apart from singing she
is gifted with this unique art of eloquence. In between her songs, she
entertained the audience by telling jokes and interesting anecdotes.
Also does anybody know that Asha is a great mimic too ! She had done
this before in her first performance of 'Nakshatranche Dene' and this
time at the repeated request of the crowd, she did it again. She took a
stanza 'Aata manacha dagada..' from the song 'Gele dyayache rahun' and
showed how Hridaynath, Sudhir Phadke, Gulam Ali would sing it. What's
more, she even showed how Lata would sing it, with Lata herself sitting
right infront. The audience loved every part of it.

She fondly remembered her late father. Then she told that a few years
back at the same event her late mother and the late R.D.Burman were
present and sitting right infront of her and today they were not there
in their seats. She sang a line 'Aakasha tarakanche uchaluna ratra geli'
from the song 'Kevha tari pahate', which means the night took away all
the stars with it. She was sentimental at that point.

Asha mesmerized the audience with her voice for about four hours. It was
well past midnight when the show finally got over.

Though I forget details like exact date, occasion, it is only the show
and Asha's voice which is permanently etched in my memory.

Shailesh.

Great post. Thanks Shailesh.

Are Lata's newer programs a take off from the Andheri concert? I heard
there were 50,000 people at Andheri and they had a memorable experience. Is
there a CD available?

Yes the Lata Live show was attended by about fifty thousand fans and it was
certainly a memorable experience. The Andheri Sports Complex stadium was
completely full. It was also an unofficial holiday for the Hindi film industry
because almost all big actors, directors were present. Especially all actresses
whom Lata has given her voice over the years were present. Vaijanti Mala, Helen,
Dimple, Jaya, Rekha, Hema Malini, Madhuri, Bhagyashree..you name it. The show
was one of the best organized ones I have ever seen. There was no one comperer
as such. Between every song actors /actresses came on stage and introduced the
song after paying tributes to Lata. The best quote I liked was from Shahrukh
Khan 'Kaash ki main heroine hota aur Lataji mere liye gaati'.(There is a lot
more to write. Hasn't this show been discussed on RMIM ? Do you guys want me to
write about the whole show ?)

Yes the show is available in set of two CD's/two cassettes by Sony Music who
had bought the rights of the show. The cassettes or CD's do not include all the
songs in the show and also all the beautiful things said about Lata by the stars
are missing. Nevertheless its a great buy.

Yes it is by Asha, but I think music is not by Hridaynath. All the songs in
'Nakshatranche Dene' have been composed by Hridaynath.
Usha Mangeshkar also has many Marathi songs to her credit, so sometimes its
confusing which of the sisters has sung which song.Cheers
