Dev Anand died in UK and is being cremated there. Mukesh died on 27th august 1976 in US, and his body was brought back to India. Were there other major cine artistes who died abroad and were cremated/buried in the country where they died?

The other confusion relates to the time of Dev Anand's death. He died on 3rd December 2011 at 10 pm london time. The news broke in India at around 3 am on 4th December 2011. So what would be his date of death? 3rd or 4th?

iirc mukesh also passed away in the night. so was 27th august as per indian time or US time?

Many artistes who were active around 1947 and subsequently migrated
to Pakistan would come under this category.

In more recent times (i.e many years after 1947), one actor who
comes to mind is Kumar (a handsome man hailing from North India,
perhaps Lucknow). He went to Pakistan and died there around 1982.
You will remember him as the lame beggar in "Shri 420" and as the
sculptor in "Mughal-e-Azam".

As would the artistes who migrated to, mainly, (presumably) UK and
(certainly) US. Leela Chitnis, sarod wizard Ali Akbar Khan (MD of
Andhiyaan), S D Batish, Sardul Kwatra have all died in America, years after
having taken up residence there.

It is an interesting matter to ponder which date should be associated with
an Indian's death if he dies in US after 3 PM local time when the next day
has started in India. But it makes sense to stick with the local time. It
would be confusing, even bizarre, if US considered India to have achieved
independence on 14-August, which was the local US date when Nehru gave his
speech at mid-night. Why should the principle be applied only for people of
Indian origin? There is no straight answer for it. Besides, if Dev Anand had
had a famous English wife and the two of them had commited suicide together
at 8 PM London Time, would we associate different dates (one London-based,
the other Delhi-based) with their death? I would just stick with the local
date-time where the event occured.

thanks for the response.

but if we use the local date time of the event, then dev anand's death anniversary would be 3rd november. however i feel the resident definition as per income tax could be used here :). if a person stayed in india for more than 181 of the past 365 days, then the Indian time should be used, else the local time of the place of event. so mf hussain would take london time, but dev anand would be india time.

what about mukesh? did he die on 27th august india time or us time?

If one wish to be precise, then can state it as

Dev Saheb died on Dec 3, 2011 in London (U.K.) {time stamp is
irrelevent)

or alternatively

Dev Saheb expired on Dec 4, 2011 { i.e.: without mentioning the
location}

Since, such like info. may also have date of birth (or born in
month / year etc
- and which happened in India). So, the 'date of death' is
not out of synch.

if you had to remember him in a memorial function in delhi in 2012, would it be on 3rd or 4th?

This is really a silly question. The time and date are always noted in
the local time for all official purposes. Dev Anand died on the 3rd in
London, that's it. If a baby is born on the 3rd at 10:00 PM in London,
what day would you celebrate the baby's first birthday in India the
next year? 3rd or 4th? That should answer your question.
