The film titles don't list any possible name for this un-known artist,
who lip-synched this great song.
Has any member ever read or heard any thing on this subject ?

Probably, she was a crooner in one of the bands that used to be a
regular feature in restaurants and hotels in Bombay during the 50s
and 60s.

Are there still any such restaurants that have live bands? I have heard
about some upmarket restaurants, mostly 5star having live bands but
perhaps they all play English songs, western music. There are some
orchestra bands I have read about that play in shady dance bars.

Long ago I had emailed Yash Chopra asking thsi question. To my
surprise he replied to my email.

And ... What did he say?
Some time after Surjit divulged the lady's name to me about two years
ago, I posed the Q to Ashaji herself as a little trivia test of
memory. She actually remembered - and mentioned that it was some
family friend of the Chopras (and also commented on the lady's wooden
on-screen rendition).
The name? That's Surjit's prerogative...

Sorry, I had to rush off to a meeting and remained very busy all day.
I have mentioned the name to Late Satish Kalra, my dear friend from
Dubai Dr. Shekhar and also in a few RMIM meetings.
Her name is Erica Lal. It would be great if some Mumbaiitte can call
up Yash Chopra and gets more biographical info about her. Of coure, we
already know how she looks like :)

I believe not many in the 5-star/4 star hotels, but there are
innumerable shady and not-so-shady bars with live orchestras and are
under the supervision of 'moral policing' by the Home Minister.
.
In the early 70s, the State Government decided to increase sales tax
from 10% to 25% in restaurants with live shows/orchestras to rake in
extra revenue and that finished the shows for good.
Many of those restaurants are still in existence.

Gaylord, near Church Gate Train Station (exit from main gate and turn
right towards
Marine Drive, the restaurant was on left side, i.e. South on the map)
was
one such restaurant, where live bands used to play.
The facade of this retaurant was featured in Taxi Driver ( in very
beginning, when
Dev drops off Sheila Ramani and a seth). It was a regular hang-out
of Shankar
and Jaikishan. Probably picturization of two songs of EK PHOOL CHAR
KANTE
(Bombshell Baby and O My Baby Doll) was inspired from the interior
of this
restaurant.

Some of the others
01) The Other Room - Ambassador Hotel
02) Little Hut - Ritz Hotel
03) The Rendezvous - Taj Mahal Hotel
04) Venice - Astoria Hotel (their star attraction used to be a cabaret
artiste named Salome).
05) also restaurants in Hotel President, the Oberoi Sheraton, Hotel
Airlines and probably the Sun-n-Sand at Juhu
Then there were somewhat seedy places like the Blue Nile (New Marine
Lines) and another one near Sassoon Dock, Colaba - I do not recall the
name.
Those were the days.
