Here are my questions: (a) Are there any more songs of Muslim or Sufi
spiritualism in Films. (b) Could someone give the lyrics of the
Parwar-digar-e-alam song and, more importantly, explain the
Quran/Bible story in the stanza. (c) I beleive that Ayub, is Job in
english, and Yunus is Jonus in english. Is that correct? What are the
english of Yahya, Yusuf, and other Muslim names.
Regards.

Along that line, the movie is "Haatim Tai". Can someone explain the
significance of the title (is it a story, a character, etc.)?
(b) Could someone give the lyrics of the

Yunus is Jonah. Wouldn't Yusuf be Joseph?
Sanjeev
Hatim tai is the name of the hero in a long story (novel). This is
probably one of the earlier stories and is very popular. It is a
no-holds-barred fantasy.
Those who have not read it, must read it in original hindi/urdu.
I guess, he is a prince of some kingdom, and is very merciful and
helping. He keeps on wandering here and there, touched by the plight of
people and goes places to solve their problems.
btw the famous term "gul-e-bakawali", i guess, got popularised from this
story itself. one princess demands it and he crosses seven seas (saat
samandar paar) to fetch it for her.
those not knowing urdu (gul = flower) call it "gulebakawali ka phool". I
have read some hindi stories in which this was referred as "gulebakawali
ka phool".
just like people say "sangmarmar patthar" not knowing that "sang" itself
means stone (patthar) and the term is "sang-e-marmar".
back to music, I think, the song "main garibo.n ka dil huu.n watan ki
zubaa.n" is from this film itself. It correctly portrays the virtues
that hero upholds.

I'll leave it to the Urdu experts to explain the meaning/proper usage of terms
such as 'gulebakawali', etc. However:

No. That is from Aab-e-Hayaat.

The story of Hatim has become a legend. But he was
a historical figure all right. Known for his genero-
sity and valour, he was in fact a sort of legend in
his own lifetime. He died just before the Prophet
was born. It is likely that if Islam had not made
its advent at that period of time, the Arabs would
probably have defied Hatim and installed his idol
in Mecca. He belonged to the tribe known as Tay,
(the 't' is soft, and the 'a' is pronounced as in
'cat'), hence his appellation as Tai (one belonging
to the Tay tribe). In recent times, his name has
been distorted as "Hatim bin Tai", which is totally
wrong.
This film "Hatim Tai" had another nice song of
religious/moral significance : "Jaane wale,
KHuda ki rahmatoN ka tujh pe saaya".

Please see my response to Sanjeev Ramabhadran.

I don't think this particular song is from "Hatim Tai".
It is from another film, probably "Aab-e-Hayaat", stg.
Premnath. The music I believe was by Sardar Malik,
Anu's father.

Thanks to all for correction about song.
btw, why is he called "sakhi" hatim tai? Isn't he?
sakhi in hindi means friends, but i am sure that such a pure hindi word
is not meant there.
similarly, i could not understand use of the same word in malika
pukhraj's nazm "ye kaun sakhi hai.n". What does it mean?
-Rawat
I believe it's a different word. The second consonant should, if
written in Devanagari, carry the little dot underneath it.
Sanjeev
This word if itransed would be 'saKii', a person full of generosity.
'sakhii' meaning friend is a different word.

Few songs which I know and have liked are:
DARD / Naushad / Hum Dard Ka Afsana Duniya Ko / Shamshad + Chorus
SHAMA / GHULAM HAIDER / Ik Tera Sahara, Part 1 and 2 / Shamshad
(not re-issued by HMV)
MUGHAL-E-AZAM / Naushad / Bekas Pe Karam Kijiye / Lata
SHIRIN FARHAD / S. Mohinder / Aakhon Mein Tumhare Jalwe Hain, Part 1
only (Part 2, i.e. 2nd paragraph has
slightly different theme) / Rafi + Chorus
(only Part 1 was re-issued by HMV)
Noor-e-Islam (Pakistan) / Lilak / Shah-e-Madina, Masrab Ke Waali / Salim
Raza + Chorus

film: Dada, song: Allah karam karna, maula tu karam karna.
There was a very touching, rafi song in which virtues of observing a
roza were detailed. A little boy keeps roza and dies due to hunger and
dehydration, or so it goes. is it from some film?
-Rawat
If someone starts posting about religion on this ng, the best action is to
ignore the post altogether. By reacting to it, we make 'them' victorious.
Have you noticed how all such "religious" posts are made using the strangest of
email addresses?
And I myself apologize for reacting to this post by Rawat. :)
Happy listenings.

There was another beautiful song by Mukesh, in the film Abdullaa (1960), "Aie

Bulo C. Rani.

For "Noor-e-Islam", I think it should be "Yasrab",
instead of "Masrab".
In another thread, a Suraiyya song was mentioned,
"Beech bhaNwar men aan phansaa hai".
Also, there was the Naushad film "Sohni Mahiwal",
where there was another such song :
"Mera bichhRa yaar milaade, sadqa Rasool ka".

(CD is from Cosmic music Ltd. 21 Haji Ali Road, bombay, Santa Cruz, India)

In 1982 The Gramophone Company of India Ltd. Dum Dum - India released an LP

This LP is a compilation of some muslim songs sung by some great singers of
yesteryears like Shamshad Begum, Hamendra Kapoor, Mohd. Rafi, Asha Bhosle,
Moinuddin Asar, Rani Rooplata, Shakeela Bano Poonvi and Rashida Khatoon.
Here's a list of the songs:
1. Ramzan Ka Mahe-Mubarak Aagaya (movie: Ramzan Ka Mahe Mubarak) sung by

In the 80-ties an illegal record had been released in Holland called
"Qawwalis and Devotional songs". This LP is a compilation of some muslim
songs sung by Iboo Qawwal, D.C. Dey, Kaloo Qawwal, Abraham Bhagat and
Shamshad Begum. I think that only the songs of Shamshad Begum are movie
songs. Here's a list of her songs:
1. Jhooli Ko Mere Sarkar
2. Shaan-E-Mohammad
I know that some of the songs above are really rare. You will not find all
the songs in de CD-shops simply because the LP's aren't tranfered to CD's
yet because the market for this kind of songs is not that big (worldwide).
If you like some of the songs above then I can sent you the songs by e-mail.
Just sent me a message to bandagi...@hotmail.com
Have a nice day.

You may also want to look outside of Hindi cinema for songs of this
genre. There was a discussion on Amir Khusrau on soc.culture.indian in
1991. I'm afraid, I can't seem to find it on the deja archives. The
thread went on about sufi/muslim songs in Indian culture (incl some
popular wedding songs).
Amir Khusrau (Persian/Brijbhasha poet in India during the 12th
century)
was a disciple of Nizamuddin Auliya. Most qawaali's
with the words " Nizamuddin Auliya" are compositions of Khusrau. He
has
been credited with a lot of innovations to Hindustani classical music
and
also the invention of Qual - now known as Qawaali. His songs are sung
in
weddings etc. too.
Some of his compositions can be found in the foll albums;
Album #1
Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan - Live in London, Dec 14, 1989 1) Manqabat in
Raga
Bhairavi Maula Ali, Mauli Ali
2) Song ( Nizamuudin Auliya) " Main jagi piya ke sangh, me to piya se
naina lage re" - Raga Bilawal
3) Qaul/ Qalbana ( Nizammuddin Auliya) " Man kunto maulah - fa'altu
maulah, dratil dratil drar daani- ham tome ta na nana - ta na na re -
yalai yalali yala yaala re - man kunto maulah" sung in Raga
Bhopali/Yaman
Kalyan
Album #2
The genius of Amir Khusrau
1. Dohe - Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan
2. Bandish - Sudha Malhotra, Dilraj Kaur, Krishna Kalle et al
3. Sawangeet - same as above
4. Ghazal - Mukesh & Sudha Malhotra (in Persian & Brijbhasha)
5. Tarana in Raga Darbari- Kankana Banerjee
6. Mukarniyan - Vani Jairam and Krishna Kalle
7. Khayal in Raga Zilaf - Pandit Jasraj
8. Khayal in Raga Yaman Kalyan - Pandit Pratap Narayan & Kankana
Banerjee
9. Qual ( same as NFAK's - mun kun to maulah, but much better) -
Shankar Shambhu Qawaal
10. Rang (Holi Qawaali - Awesome!!!) - same as above [folks may
remember this song being sung surprisingly well by Anu Kapoor in a
Holi special Antakshari some years back]
11. Dohe - Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan
Speaking of which - can anyone tell me where I can get CD's/tapes of
Shankar Shambhu? I've been trying for the past 10 years, but none of
the regular music shops have them :-(
Of course, there are quite a few pure Hindustani classical songs which
have a sufi/islamic content.
Just do a search on deja archives for amir khusrau and you will find
scores of stuff on this topic.
Cheers
Arun

I had sent a mail to you on the above id. Just in case you didn't get
it...
I'll check my neighbourhood music stores in Sunnyvale, CA. I had
recorded it fro a CD in 1991. In other words, even if the LP is out of
print (as the Amir Khusrao site confirms), it may still be possible to
get a CD.
If I don't suceed, I can tape and mail it to you.
