I think the original Tamil movie was "Kadhalan", starring Prabhudeva, music by ARR.
The "muqabala.." song is definitely there, I don't know whether all the songs have been
copied.

Cheers,
- Ramki.

Not only the songs, the whole movie was a "copy". It was dubbed version of a
tamil superhit "Kadalan". The movie was dubbed in Telugu also, named "Premi
something...". The movie did well mostly because of ARR's music. And the songs
of this movie became such a big hit they broke all language barriers. When the
songs(or lets say, the music) became a hit in the north also, people started
using the tune. There were many songs released in that period based on this
one. For eg, Muqabla Mukkala of Sabse Bada Khiladi, another song from a movie
starring Sunil Shetty and Shilpa...I dont remember the name, an album released
by some small time group and a song called "Aiye kudi, fuljhadi" from some yet
another movie. Seeing that so many people were cashing on Muqabala's popularity
the producer (who by the way is the same who produced Gentleman) got it dubbed
in Hindi and named it Hum Se Hai Muqabla, which in no way is related to the
storyine. The names in Tamil and Telugu both of which mean True Lover were more
apt but in order to make people understand it was the original, they did it.
Anyway, that much of information suffices I hope. :)

"Hum Se Hai Muqabla" is a dubbed version of the Tamil movie
"Kadhalan". The songs are the same too, just with Hindi lyrics instead of
the Tamil ones. The same deal with "Bombay" and "Roja": dubbed versions
of the Tamil original.

Now Rangeela is a different matter. It is labelled as AR Rahmans'
first original Hindi music, but is it? "Yaaro Sun Lo Zara" is a carbon
copy of a song from his Telagu film, "Super Police." "Tanha Tanha" has
the same beats from a song in Super Police. AR Rahman copies himself on
occaision. A good example is a song from "Super Police", Sundera en
Sundera has the same beats as a song from the Tamil film "Karthumma".
Does anyone know which came out first?

Now here I find someone who shares my thoughts. Long back when I heard the
Rangeela songs for the first time I posted an article on RMIM mentioning this
particular observation and in turn received lots of mails and replies
chastising me such remarks on ARR's creativity and this was despite the fact
that I never said he wasn't creative. After all he was copying HIS tunes, not
somebody else's. Anyway, it was nice to know someone else also noticed this.

Super Police the audio cassette was released much much earlier than
Karuthamma .....
Interesting question is about teh song "Aa siggu likku..." in
GangMaster(Telugu) ..ARR uses the same tune in Uzhavan(Tamil) for the song
"Kozhirendum muzhitchirukku" (sp? of both :) ).....The question is which
came first?
Also he has used the theme tune of Bombay in one of his Tamil films too for
a song...(this is not a total copy like the above two tunes)...but was using
the same tune for the theme as a sort of prelude to the song...I think the
film was Karuthamma or might be Pavithra too (will check up :) )

Anyway my grouse is that these songs are pretty evident that he might use a
tune which he used in his film for a particular lang... for a film in
another language....But to say that Urvasi Urvasi or Mukkala Muqabla is
copied is too gross to be considered!! And that was probably the point about
which I might (don't remember tho' :) ) "chastised" (sheeesh! It seems
somebody didn't do too good a job of that...couldn't have been me ;)
Peeyush!

My point is that as far as I know he has copied only one tune (which ppl can
make out clearly) and that is Parkade...in Gentleman ...mukhD.aa sounds like
the Kilele number! Besides this and the above mentioned tune, I haven't
noticed any other copying ... (even from his own works!!)

Later,
Ikram.

I agree with you fully. Some time back I had posted an article on Rehman's
repetativeness of tunes.I had written about he using few tunes very often in
his songs.I had also made an observation that he may be using same ragas for
composing his tunes. And I still say he is creative. But I ahve to say he is
limited in his tunes.Consider his songs as a single block and you can identify
that this song is being influenced by some of his earlier tunes.

KD.

Before I respond to your comments, please don't take this the
wrong way. I have been a HUGE A.R. Rahman fan for almost 2 years now, and
I even buy his Tamil stuff, when I can (I can't understand Tamil). AR
Rahman can 'copied' from himself, but he has also lifted elements of
English songs too. The most obvious example part is the ending of
'Muqabla Muqabla'. That was taken from 'Jam' by Micheal Jackson. A couple
of days ago, I was listening to the radio, and I heard the opening beats
to a song, and I noticed, 'Hey these are the same beats as Mangta hai Kya
from Rangeela.' Upon comparision, the beats from 'Devil Inside' by INXS
and 'Mangta Hai Kya' from Rangeela were the same, only the 'Mangta' beats
were slowed down. AR Rahman does not need to resort to such things, he is
too good. Has anyone heard his latest, "Beauty Palace" yet?
