Hi RMIMers,

There have been quite a few singers who have tried to follow(copy?) the
"Rafi-style" of singing. Now, I donot want to compare any of them to the
great one - its foolish to do so. But, I would like to know your
opinions about who copies Rafi best.

The list of such singers include Anwar, Shabbir Kumar, Mohd. Aziz, Vipin
Sachdeva, Sonu Nigam, etc.

Personaly, I feel Sonu Nigam has been able to do it better than the
rest. To be honest, he is the only one I can bear when he is singing a
Rafi Song.

What do you think?

I agree.Sonu nigam and to some extent Anwar can copy rafisaab
better than others.
Sonu nigam is one of those talented singers who has been neglected.
His songs like "achha sila diya","Ishg mei.n ham tumhe kya baatye.n" are
really good.Nowadays MD's prefer either Udit or Sanu.Of current lot IMO Udit
is the best singer followed by Abhijeet,Sonu nigam..remotely followed by repetitive
nasal Sanu.

I agree, Sonu Higam is the closest. But Vipin Sachdeva is not far behind.
Before
I heard Sonu, I thougt Vipin was the closest!!!!!!!
There is also Debashish Dasgupta Suresh Pujari
and Prem Bhatia whom you didn't mention,

the best 'copy' of Rafi is a young man inthe US named Sanjeev Ramabhadran.
His talents go beyond just copying Rafi, of course. However, when he
sings Rafi songs, he adds that extra touch that diehard Rafi fans resonate
to.

I had heard him when he was freshman at princeton. I wonder what he is up
to nowadays.

When I was in Bombay for 10 months last year, the only TV show that I
found worth watching was 'Sa Re Ga Ma Pa'. This is a musical show and is
hosted (quite well) by Sonu Nigam who I think has a half way decent
voice and can be a good singer given the right opportunity and training.

Many participants on this show were exteremely talented and I just hope
that we get to hear some of them soon.

People who travel to India should check this show out - it is on Zee and
used to air every Monday at 8:00pm.

One notable omossion here is Anwar. I think that after Sonu Nigam, Anwar was
next in line. Aziz and Shabbir are not really close to Rafi's voice when it
comes to range.

What about Shabbir Kumar and Mohd. Aziz?
BTW what happened to these two? They had some good songs in the 80's.

As I was listening to the cassette of Mritudata, it looked as if
one of the numbers (don't remember the lyrics) is sung by Mohd
Aziz. Could somebody confirm please ?

Shabbir Kumar was closer to Rafi than Mohd. Aziz. All Munna Aziz did was
whine and cry through even happy songs. Thats why he isn't around and, I
for one, am glad.

Recently had an opportunity to listen to Sanjeev Ramabhadran (calls
himself as "Chhote Rafi" in a live concert in Gaithersburg, MD. I had
heard him the last time in 1992 December in the same place. Over the last
5 years the quality of his programme has deterioted. He tries to compere
the program himself (which he does badly, who cares about the the
statistics, where and how he found the song) in the bargain there is more
talk less music. He needs to get a master of ceremonies and a good sound
engineer. He needs to get his own sound system also. His dad tries to
everything for him. His song selections were bad, he tries to sing his
personal favorites rather than sticking to popular hit songs. He sings
all old songs from late fifities and early sixties. With most of the
audience in their 30's or 40's, he needs to sing songs from 70's more.

This is bad enough to wake me up from my year long khamoshi on rmim.
I strongly think that Sanjeev has great composure and does an excellent
job of conducting his shows. I can easily do without the good-for-nothing
"master of ceremonies" who don`t really add anything useful to a
_MUSIC_ concert. Sajeev, on the other hand, has a good base in classical
music in addition to a good perspective of Indian film songs.

RAfi's great songs from the 70`s... hello ! knock knock .. wake up ..
RMIM ka bachcha bachcha jaanta hai ki Rafi's best was from the mid 40's
to the late 60's. So I am not sure what you mean by "popular" songs
from the 70's. I would anyday prefer listening to

Man re too kahe na dheer dhare
Oh duniya ke rakhavaale
Suhani raat dhal chuki
Teri aankhon ..

than

Chand mera dil
Maine poocha chand se (80`s)

Even the very popular Shanky-J songs for Shammi are all from the 60's. I
have no problem with his choice of songs.. infact it was in one of
his concerts that I heard the Kalyanji-Anandji song "Teri zulfein pareshan"
for the first time.. it is still one of my Rafi favs.

popular = liked by people :)

And what else falsehoods does the sons of RMIM know??

> I would anyday prefer listening to

And for heaven's sake, do you need to extrapolate your likings to
the "RMIM ka bachcha bachcha" characters??

There are possibly more easier ways of defending Sanjeev than pulling
down Rafi's outpourings from the 70s onwards.....

Later,
Ikram.

In article <33830C...@shef.ac.uk>,

I think both these songs are good. Also, since the recording techniques
in the 70s & 80s became better and better - with stereo coming to
bollywood - I feel Rafi sounded even better in some of the songs from
this period. Take for example, the following:

Kya hua tera vaada
Dard-e-dil

And the duets like:

Vaada karle saajna
Tum se door rehke

I don't think the Rafi songs from 70s & 80s are inferior to the ones
before that. But MDs were generally making less classical based songs and
the trend was more for light and pop tunes. Any more suggestions for good
Rafi songs from this period?

Bunty, Kumar Sanu *tries* to copy KK but he can't. Kumar Sanu is a good
singer but he is nowhere near KK.
