It has to do with the picturization. Without revealing the
storyline, I suggest you watch the movie as it is quite an
entertainer: decent plot, excellent songs and to top it all,
a very handsome Shashi Kapoor singing in that manly voice..

I have not seen the movie, but do you mean to say that Shashi lip-synched
on this song.
(You could reply to me directly, if you do not wish to post on the ng, not
to reveal the story-line)
BTW, the prelude of this song is one of my favorites. (Read on)
Let me break it up into the segments (as I remember).
1) The song starts with dragging strings section, creating an effect that
I had never seen in any song
No other MD has been able to achieve it (wonder if RD had to do anything
with that).
You will have to listen 'into it' to really understand the notes that the
string section is playing. Me and a couple
of my friends spent hours trying to decipher it for our college band. (but
failed). [We blamed the tape recorders 'dabba'
for not bringing the clarity out in the sequence.
[Did the photographer pan the dark sky during this piece?]
2) Vibrato guitar plays some 10 notes (Conga/bongo in the background) very
much RD style. [This section will return in the interlude]
3) Accordion swells (I wonder it is pa. ga_ re sa re pa., just a feeling,
do not have an instrument handy)
4) String section chops-in like thunder. (twice)
5) Swar mandal punctuates the strings.
[I imagine that it must have been complementing the first droplets on
Rakhi's body, hope it was not Shahi's fat torso :-)]
6) Tabla rolls in to take the rhythm to Roopak,
with Sitar on a melodic variation of Vibrato guitar piece, (again some 5
notes, repeated)
(very few songs come to my mind that use multiple styles, specially
sharing odd count e.g. dadra, roopak, jhaptaal, with an even count e.g.
Kaharwa. I am referring to the light songs so please do bring in the
examples like "Kuhu kuhu". The light songs that come to my mind are. "Mere
man baja Mridung"(Utsav)next time you listen to it, try to follow the
counts.
Anyway after the Sitar piece.
7) Cello does its part.
8) And the six notes on the flute complete the prelude.
BTW the entire song is composed on a minor scale (Komal Ga_) but there is
only one place where you can 'hear" the Major note, (ShudDha Ga). Can
anyone I mean anyone tell me when :-)

So, if he did "lip-synch" on this song, do you mean to say
that Lata's voice is manly?

IMHO, it is too much like SDB. Have noticed it in a few places. I think it
is there in some song in Guide(ofcourse, that too could be RDB's karamaat)

The above order is correct, well almost. :) The actual order based on your
descriptions is Step 2, then 3, then step 4 once, back to step 2, step 3
again, step 4 twice, and then step 4 once again, fading away into the
Swar Mandal, followed by Sitar & Vibrato guitar, followed by (?--this
instrument has me stumped, played with the violins), then sarangi about 8
notes, then flute, flowing into "Megha chaye..." Sigh! Just when I thought
that this song, could not sound any more beautiful than it already does
(lachrymal glands suddenly being put to use) :)

Where? No don't answer. Play it for the RMIM meet on Sat. :))
Sajjad was right, when true to his style, he called this, The greatest
compostion, he had heard--after any of his own. :)

Sure, in fact, we can go further and say one of the following too :)
a) if it didn't sound manly enough, the song brings forth the hitherto
unknown feminine part of Shashi
b) if it did, well, this song is proof that Lata's voice had "vazan"
- Balaji
Correction. When pressed by Raju Bharatan to name a song of some
merit, Sajjad reluctantly mentioned "megha chhaae" as half-way
decent and added "Only because of Lata's singing." Sajjad would
consider SDB's orchestration kitchen-sink approach. And note that
the tune of the song comes from Ravindra Sangeet.

Hi,
I'm curious to know which Rabindra sangeet this song has a tune similar to.
Pallab asked me this some days back, but I couldn't recall any. Which one is it
?
