I had an opportunity to witness Ek Din Ka Sultan on VHS starring
Mehtaab and Waasti , produced and directed by Sohrab Modi .

Way back in the 80's the movie was telecast on DD . I find the movie
on VHS edited at many places and filled with junk advertisements ,
but the audio and video quality was not bad .

I find the following things which might interest the NG .

1. Geetkosh mentions 3 MD's but I find one more name in the titles
Walter Koufmann who scored excellent back ground music , from
his name he appears to be a european .

2. Song # 2 ' Ho khwaja ajmeeri ' is in the voice of Zohra of
Ambala . This can be updated in geetkosh as it is mum on the singer.

3. Song # 5 Gharibon ki duniya
song # 6 Saza naseeb ne dedi and
song # 9 Unse jo sahab salamat

All the songs were picturised on Mehtaab and the songs on the discs
are in the voice of Amirbai Karnataki , but the voice in the movie
doesn't sound to be hers . It is someone else .

I am ruling out the possibility on the bad quality of VHS as the
voices of Zohra and Durrani are clear and easily identifiable .

Is it possible that someone else rendered the songs for the screen ?
I look for the feedback from the enlightened NG who have
access to the VHS .

Thanks for your posting which are very informative.

If a handful of rmim'ers like you post regularly I am sure
much of the lost music of 1930's and 40's would be covered . It will
remain in the archives for serious researchers .

I have the following queries ,

1. Is the story of Ek Din Ka Sultan was based on some historical
importance in the life of Humayun ?

2. Indian films have covered most of the Mughal Emperors , Babur ,
Humayun , Akbar , Jehangir , Shahjehan . Any movie relating
to Aurangazeb was ever released ?

3. I wish to know the real full names of the emperors .

Please help .

I am hoping to get a copy of the movie soon; in fact, it may be in the
mail. Will comment after watching it.

In article <20040730161234...@mb-m01.aol.com>, Rirfan6 says...

Doesn't Mohammad precede Jalal Uddin in the case of Akbar? I seem to remember
this being cited in some movie. Also one of India's leading journalists--MJ
Akbar's full name is the same as the Mughal Emperor and I have heard him say
that he was named after the Emperor.

No Ketan ji, Mohammad does not precede
Jalal Uddin and names of other emperors.
I have an English translation of Babur Nama, an autobiography of Babur, in
which names of Babur and Humayun are
written as mentioned by me.

A couple of quizzes :

1) Did Walter Kaufmann score music for any Hindi film?
(I don't think he did but still...)
2) What is the title of the book(s) written by one Kaufmann
on Indian music? WK, who was involved with Ek Din
Ka Sultan, must be the same person, I guess.
3) One person with 'European-sounding name' had given
music to one of Himanshu Roy's films before he founded
Bombay Talkies. Name the film and the MD. After
reading KP's post, I wondered for a moment whether
it was Kaufmann who had scored music for Himanshu
Roy's film. But it was somebody else, someone about
whom google search did not reveal any information at all.

For answer to #3, decypher the next line at www.rot13.com :

Svyz : Xnezn (193k). ZQ - Rearfg Oebnquhefg.

I seem to recall a German name : Franz Osten.

Maybe, Kaufmann's first name had a German spelling
like "Walthur".

Franz Osten was not a music director. He directed
quite a few (most? all?) Bombay Talkies films upto
1939 when his involvement with Indian films ceased
because the British rulers wanted him to leave the
country after the war started in Europe.

Dr.surjit ji and Guri ji have a DVD of
Khurshid Anwar's talk with Dr.Brian Silver ( Presently Chief of Urdu
Service
VOA - A famous Sitarist) which was
telecast by PTV in 1978. KA mentioned
the name of Walter Kaufmann while
mentioning a Violin player. I think WK
was a Violinist who used to broadcast
jogalbandis of Raags on AIR.
