Here's my idea.
How about posting all of our Ghulam Ali albums--cds, lps, or tapes--on
RMIM (under the above subject: Ghulam Ali Discography)? Now, I propose
some sort of format. How about:
(a) Album: (eg. Golden Collection-2 CD)
(b) Singers: (just incase there is more than Ghulam Ali on the album--eg.
Meraj-e-Ghazal)
(c) Company: (eg. HMV)
(d) Live/Studio: (where we specify if it's a concert recording album or not)
(e) Year of Release: (this might be hard, since a lot of the music
doesn't have release dates, but it's better to have as much info as
possible)
(f) Ghazal and Poet: (eg. Hangama Hai Kyon Barpa - Dagh Dehlavi)
**I propose that we NOT use the ITRANS format. Many people (potential
contributors) who regularly read this newsgroup are not familiar with
it, and might turn away from this project.
**If the song is a geet, or a thumri, I suggest we label it after the
song (eg. Balma Mohe Chhodke Na Ja (Thumri) - .... )
(g) Misc: (anything like poor sound quality, awesome sound quality, out
of circulation, etc.)
-------------
This is going to be a big project, but I think it's worthwhile. How
about we give people about three weeks to a month to enter in their
info? I volunteer to consolidate all the received information and e-mail
it to Nita at the end of the month, so she can organize it onto one of her
websites.
After this, we can attempt Mehdi Hasan, Jagjit Singh/Chitra Singh. Let's
see how this goes first. :-) Any suggestions about the format itself or
anything else before we begin? I propose we begin tomorrow or the day
after. Let's get psyched!
Achyut
Sandip,
You're right--bteter to think about the Ghulam Ali one right now.
Alright then, let's get started. To avoid duplicate entires in the
beginning, I will let everyone know which ones I will do right now:
(1) Golden Collection (2 CD)
(2) In Concert - Vol I (Music India)
(3) At His Very Best (Music India)
(4) Dard-e-Dil (Magnasound)
(5) Greatest Hits of Ghulam Ali (Magnasound)
(6) Samundar (Ultra Series)
(7) Passions (Tips)
(8) The Legend (Magnasound)
Later,
Achyut
Hey Achyut, what happened to Meraj-e-Gazal and Husn-e-
Gazal? After recommending them, they find no place in your
list? :-)

I already have a comprehensive (almost!) discography of
Jagjit/Chitra at my site. Not all the lyrics are provided
for some of the albums but I am getting there! :-) For
those of you who may be interested, you can find it at:
http://www.geocities.com/~fhnaqvi/LstJC.html
Thansk Achyut, for taking the initiative. I shall look
forward to the end result of our endeavour. :-)
Nita
P.S. Anyone else having problems reading RMIM on DejaNews?
Or is it just me?
I am okay with your format as long as everyone else is. As for Jagjit/Chitra,
my own feeling is that there a number of discographies done on websites devoted
to the duo. Might end up being repetitious and what not.
Sandip.
Also, whether an album is an original release or a compilation of previous
material or a reissue.
I would also appreciate content-comparison information, e.g., whether the
2-cassette Gulam Ali-Asha has songs not included in the CD, and vice versa.
>(e) Year of Release: (this might be hard, since a lot of the music

Another piece of information that will be very helpful is: evaulating
the individual songs, especially against variants, e.g., live version of
a ghazal versus the same ghazal in a studio version, in terms of singing
quality, stanzas used, etc. For this, one eventually needs a song-oriented
view of the database.

Format is not important when you are at the stage of basic information
collection. Let people dump information about whatever recordings they
have.
Format is important when you yourself start the next phase: putting all
the information you received in a database. There, I suggest a dual
structure I alluded to above: by recording and, more important, by
song/poem/ghazal. We should be able to start with a ghazal of interest
and find out which all recordings carry it.
Note that the larger entity need not always be a CD/cassette. It can
be a film in which Ghulam Ali has sung, or for which he has composed
music (e.g., Mere Gharib Nawaz). Other forms may show up in the future,
e.g., mp3 files in a CD-ROM!
And be on the lookout for any rare Ghulam Ali song that might have
shown up on mutliple-artist compilations!
Similarly, it is a trivial matter whether nettors use ITRANS or not
when they post information. When you start entering information in
the ultimate databse of yours, I am sure you'll need to standardize
and what better than ITRANS?

You are going one better than Latin Americans (and Indian Indians)! Even
they (and we) say only "kal", not "paraso.n". :)

... unless you're talking about the famous dOhA parody:
aaj kare so kaal kar, kaal kare so par_so.n
itnI jaldI kyA hai, beTA? abhI pa.De hai.n bar_so.n
:-)
Other variants of this parody exist.

I think this was a spontaneous idea from Achyut. Fixing the
song database is a much bigger task and will require
careful planning before we jump in. This, OTOH, can be done
ad hoc with people providing their input and Achyut
compiling the same.
I will be posting my list of GHulam Ali albums. No common
albums except the Golden Collection so this may prove to be
an interesting and beneficial exercise for all of us.

I shall post the listings of the following albums in a day or two:
1. Mehfil- Khoobsoorat Ghazalen (Magnasound)

4. Ghazal Greats (Weston) (Ghulam Ali with Jagjit Singh)
5. Ghulam Ali ghazals from the Best Ghazals of Pakistan Golden
Collection (HMV) (5 of his ghazals are included)
I also have Best of Asha Bhonsle and Ghulam Ali on tape. After Achyut
posts the listing of Meraj-e-Ghazal, if this includes any other ghazal
by him, I shall post that.
I also have Ghulam Ali's Goldn Collection Vol 3 tape which has a few
song NOT in the Golden COllection CD. I shall post those later.
As far as Ghulam Ali songs in Hindi films is concerned, I distinctly
remember seeing the Ghulam Ali version of "ye dil ye paagal dil mera"
in a Shatrughan Sinha movie. Alas, I don't remember the name of the
movie. :-( I don't think these can be found in Ghazals from Films
compilations. Perhaps other RMIMers can fill in.

I have a single tape where Ghulam Ali sings semi-classical pieces.
AFAIR, it is an EMI(Pakistan) release. I could give you more information
if you are interested in including non-ghazal albums in your list. Just
let me know. Also, RMIMers, are there other such albums?
I noticed that between you and Nita, you have only one occurence of
"itanii muddat baad mile ho, kin socho.n me.n gum rahata ho". I
distinctly remember hearing two different versions of this ghazal -
a live concert recording and a studio recording. Which in turn means
that at least one album is missing from your list/s. Hopefully the
other album details will be provided by somebody. As an aside, which
version is included in the GC?

Why?
C
I haven't seen a clarification as to whether or not "various artist"
compilations are being included, but if they are:
------------------------------------------------------------------------
(a) Pasand aapki ghazalen hamari
(b) Hariharan, Roopkumar Rathod and Sonali Rathod, Ashok Khosla,
Ghulam Ali, Jagjit Singh, Salma Agha, Talat Aziz.
(c) Venus/Melody International MCB-109
(d) Studio
(e) 1996
(f) Ret par likh ke mera naam - Mohsin Naqvi
(g) This ghazal is the fourth of eight on the cassette (Hariharan sings
twice). It may have been taken from another album, The Best of
Ghulam Ali (also on Venus/Melody International), which is advertised
on the inlay card.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have not seen the above ghazal listed so far. My apologies if wrong!
Happy listenings,

Are you talking about "Sheesh Mahal"? Nita said she'd post that. If it's
not, please post it, Chetan. I had another tape of Ghulam Ali thumris
that I lost a few months ago, but I can't recall the tape's name right
now.
Here's a story for you guys:
The Joshi family was taking a road-trip. We stopped off at a rest stop,
so in order to get out of the car, I put an entire case of ghazal tapes
(most of which were Ghulam Ali's) on top of the car. When we left the
rest stop, one family member (whose name will go undisclosed) forgot to
take that case off the top of the car and put it inside! We heard a thump
some five minutes later (when we got back onto the highway), but no one
knew what it was exactly. We all just assumed that it was something in
the trunk. Only an hour later did I realize that my case of tapes became
Virginia roadkill! :(
The point of my story: Never put tapes on top of a car.

You just can't. For someone who likes Asha, it's way too good not to
have....period.
Psyched for more entries to the Ghulam Ali Discography,
Achyut
PS - "Various artist" compilations are being included in the discography.

The "live concert" recording (is there any other kind of concert? :))

You're taking this too seriously, Chetan :)

Ravindra.
1. Kiya hai pyar jise humne zindagi ki tarah (Qateel Shifai)
2. Dil waalon kya dekh rahe ho in raahon mein
3. Roya karenge aap bhi peharon isi tarah
4. Patta patta boota boota raaz hamara jaane hai
5. Yeh baaten jhooti baatein hain (Ibne Insha)
I am trying my best to recall rest of the ghazals.
Ravinder
Not having the list of media items (cassettes, CDs, etc.) up
front was inconvenient! Some kind of ITRANSing seemed to be
going on for the song titles in the first 10 recordings. There
was a swich to "HMV conventions" after that.
One curious thing about 27 (The Latest and Best Ghazals from
Ghulam Ali by HMV 1981). I have the identical cassette, but
the seventh song is missing: apni tasaveer ko aankhon me.n
lagtaa kya hai! This is the only song on the cassette for
which there wasn't poet information. This song is not
avilalbe in any other recording. Mystery song!
A few cassettes from 27 on seem to have only one side! I
think all the tracks are listed in most cases, but do check
31 Ghazalsara (Vol. II) and 32 Guldasta (Vol. II). Were
they from Sandip?
Here is a list of the recordings, continuing your
numbering, delimiting the text field by double-quotes.
1-34 are from your consolidated post.
35-39 are from Sandip's later post.

48 "Dard: Gahazalen (Venus CD)"
49 "Ghazals by Ghulam Ali Vol.-4 (with Sudha Malhotra)"
50 "Lal-O-Gauhar: Best of Mehdi Hassan and Ghulam Ali"
I am treating this as the masterlist for crossreferencing.
Here are some details on the recordings 40-50. The track list
is given below.
40 Ghulam Ali: Moods & Emotions--12 New Ghazals
2-cassette pack by Venus VCB-743 1987
It is a very good 2-cassette set from Venus. Very good
P-stat details, with lyricist and music director properly
identified by song. Looks like it cannot be taken for
granted that the composer is always Ghulam Ali. The
inlay sheet also says that the music for all the songs was
arranged by Kaka Rajput. Very few repetitions from
other available recordings. Excellent value. 12 songs.
41 Ghulam Ali At His Best
CD by Sonic
I wonder if it is a pirate CD. The label name is Sonic.
No other information about the company. Only the number
SD 1010 everywhere. The inlay sheet gives the lyricist
name (occasionally wrong; e.g. Mohin for what I take to
be Momin) and the timelength of each track. Has a few
songs not available in the other recordings. 12 songs.
42 Ghulam Ali: Punjabi Live Programme
Cassette
As the name implies, Punjabi songs sung by Ghulam Ali.
8 songs. Two are available elsewhere. Hence a good
buy. No comany name or logo or anything anywhere!
43 Friendship: Anup Jalota-Ghulam Ali
Cassette TIPS Platinus TUS 1158 1998
No idea what the two artists have to do with each other!
Side A of the cassette has four Anup Jalota songs and side
B has four Ghulam Ali songs. Lyricist/MD information is
given, although sloppily (e.g., Moshan Naqvi). Has one
song not available elsewhere: koii raat aisii bhii aaye
by Nassar Ali Nasar with music by Ghulam Ali.
44 The Finest Ghazals of Ghulam Ali
Cassette RPG STHVS 852023 1985
8 songs. All availabe elsewhere. Useful for the
poet/MD information.
45 Mehfil-E-Ghazal
Cassette Weston GBxH 2058 1989
A compilation of ghazals by many artists: Mehdi Hassan,
Noorjehan, Runa Laila, Reshma. Has two songs by Ghulam Ali,
both unavailable in other recordings:
. ye mehsoos hota hai
. ishq ek zikr banegaa
No information about poets. The collection generally has
rare tracks from the artists, e.g., "har qadam par .." by
Noorjehan.
46 Ghulam Ali Sings Super Classical
EMI TC CEMCP 5599
It is an EMI-Pakistan tape. Has three light-classical
songs by Ghulam Ali. One song is cut across the two
sides of the cassette!
47 Best of Ghulam Ali & Asha Bhosle
Music: Ghulam Ali
RPG STHV 852021 1986
You should be glad that you can ignore this cassette!
RPG hasn't done the usual mischief of including one rare
song. It has six Asha songs from Meraj-E-Ghazal and two
commonplace Ghulam Ali songs: "hangaama" and "aavaargee".
(I haven't bothered to note down the individual songs
sung by Asha.)
48 Dard: Gahazalen
CD by Venus MCD No. 658
Has 8 songs spread over Talat Aziz, Roopkumar Rathod,
Hari Haran (sic), Mehdi Hassan, Ashok Khosla, and Jagjit
Singh. The song by Ghulam Ali appears to be a rare one:
"kuchh to havaa bhee" by Parveen Shakir.
49 Ghazals by Ghulam Ali Vol.4 (with Sudha Malhotra)
Cassette by ASC
Appears to be a spurious cassette (arbitrary black picture
on green paper). Haven't seen other volumes. Has 10 songs
of Ghulam Ali and two of Sudha Malhotra. (I suspect the
Sudha songs are just add-on. One of them is very nice:
Khvaab thaa yaa Khayaal thaa kyaa thaa.) Many rare songs
of Ghulam Ali. Must buy.
50 Lal-O-Gauhar: Best of Mehdi Hassan and Ghulam Ali
This tape was my first exposure to these two artists. Many
years ago, I copied it from a long-lost colleague. Those
days, I didn't use to pay attention to other details; so,
I didn't jot down any information. I have never come across
the tape again. The only thing I remember is that it was
one of those rare things, a 90-minute pre-recorded tape.
One side has Mehdi Hassan songs and toward the end, is
the first half of the first Ghulam Ali song. In all,
6 Ghulam Ali songs; none rare.
Here are the song listings. Sorry for the long lines,
but the list is in a form I could import into a
spreadsheet program, which serves as my database program.
The fields are: song title (in half-hearted ITRANS), singer(s),
poet, music director, recording number (same as in the list
above) and an optional filed for comments.
I have left the music director field blank, unless there was
a specific mention. Presumably, the music director for many of
them is Ghulam Ali, but it seemed best to leave it blank, pending
confirmation. After all, there are quite a few songs for which
the music was composed by some other artist. There is perhaps
merit in having a "year" field, but information regarding the
year in which the particular istance of the song was recorded has
not been reliably available. GA in the singer field is Ghulam Ali.

I have all the individual songs Achyut and Sandip posted in this
format. Let me know if it is useful to post them. There are
342 records, counting repeat songs (240 unique songs). The main
advantage is that one can sort by any of the fields.
The frequency of occurrence of a song in these 50 recrodings might
be a measure of something like popularity. In any case, the
following songs lead:
chupke chupke raat din 9
dil me.n ek lehar si 9
ha.ngaama hai kyu.N barpaa 7
kal chaudhavin ki raat 5
kabhi kitaabo.n me.n phool 4

royaa karenge aap bhi 4
vo jo ham me.n tum me.n 4
ye baate.n jhooTi baate.n 4

> Thanks a lot, Achyut, for the work on Ghulam Ali discography.
I have a MIL CD titled "Tukray-Tukray". I will post the details of it
tomorrow. I don't know if it was a re-release (or re-released as another
album since I do not see the name in the rather exhaustive list here).
Consists of mostly live recordings.
Regards
Rajneesh
Its Sandip. I am happily vacationing in Houston right now and actually was
thinking of the discography while shopping.
I was in a huge store of cassettes that had a VERY large collection of Ghulam
Ali recordings. Most of it was pirated recordings from the establsihed
companies, but a lot of the standard recordings from the usual companies.
Lots of EMI Pakistan recordings including
Vol. 1 of the Evening with Ghulam Ali series for which I had listed vol. 4. Had
"Aise Chup Hai" on that recording, but in a different tune !!! That was very
interesting.
Alas... I am NOT independently wealthy and could not buy out the whole
collection in the store. So, there is tons more out there and I will post what
I bought a bit later. As for Ghazalsara, I am sorry that is a bit incomplete. I
will remedy that as soon as I can.
Just about Ghulam Ali and other music composers. It is assumed that he does his
own music, but he does work with others. The result in Kalam-E-Mohabbat was a
disaster, but I am glad to hear that he did the Venus recordings turned out
well.
I have a cassette by him that had some Khusro ghazals that got a nice
discussion in the Alt.Language.Urdu poetry group. The music was done by one
Khalil Ahmed. Does that mean he was the composer or arranger ? It a couple of
lovely and well-known ghazals of GA (Koi Hamnafas Nahi Hai and Thumhare Khat Me
Naya Ek Salam). Always thought GA had composed for that himself.
Achyut, thanks for the work as well. You have been a real trooper on this
project !!!
Be back with the rest soon....
Sandip.
