Now what's the dude trying to say..?? He never thought she'd be beautiful,
& she's exactly how he thought she would be..?? :) which means..?? :)

Read "Chand si mehbooba" as one....
Roughly translated:
"I could never even dream that I'll ever get someone sooooo beautiful
as my loved one"
"socha" is used in two different senses in each line...though
figuratively both times.

Very badly worded song but here's my speculative penny's worth:
He never thought that he would find his "chaand si mehbooba" but the
mehbooba he did find is exactly as he envisioned or wished for.

Few lines down the song and the meaning could be clearer..
Naa kasme hai naa rasme hai,
Naa shikve hai naa vaade hai
Ek soorat bholi bhaali hai,
do naina seedhe saadhe hai, do naina seedhe saadhe hai.
aisa hi roop khayalon mein tha, aisa maine socha tha,
haan tum bilkul waisi ho, jaisa maine sochaa tha.
(havent heard the song in ages, so there could be nits to pick, dont bother)
Anyways, really nice lyrics. btw, which film is it from?

Punctuate the first line as follows :
Chaand si mehbooba ho meri kab, aisa maine socha tha
Equivalently,
kabhi to meri chaand si mehbooba ho, aisa maine socha tha
Yes, could have been worded better, but poetic licence and all that, y'know...

I think it is quite clear ! :)
Here's how.
He _admits_ that there _exists_ a 'chand-si-mehbooba'
BUT, he 'wonders' (socha) when such a person could be his !
Azra Bano - that comma should be correctly placed as :
Chaand si mehbooba ho meri kab, aisa maine socha tha
And then when he finds her, she's just the way he expected !
Voila ! Is that good enough??

Allowing for my amnesic memories - it's from Himalay ki god mein.
(god as in goad (lap))

well, the "dude" is being honest and down to earth but
at the same time romantic about his "love". in fact, for
this very reason, this is one of my favorites (mostly
for the lyrics and mukesh's voice).
instead of saying "chaudaveen kaa chaand ho yaa aftaab ho,
jo bhi ho tum khuda ki kasam lajabaab ho" and sounding
extravagant and insincere, he is saying to his beloved that
she is not the prettiest thing on the earth but then he
doesn't care because she is *exactly* the kind of girl he
had dreamt of (i.e. she is his "dream-girl"). in fact, later
on in the song he describes the attributes that he likes in
her:
na rasmen hon, na kasmen hon, na shikave hon, na waade hon,
ek soorat bholee-bhaalee ho, do nayana seedhe-saade hon,
aisa hi roop khyaalon mein tha, aisa hi maine socha tha.
haan tum bilkul vaisi ho, jaisa maine socha tha.
again, you can see the emphasis on simplicilty here in contrast
with most of the other romantic songs (like "ye kaam kamaan
bhaven teri, palakon ke kinare kajraare" or "aye jaane-chaman,
tera gora badan, jaise khilta hua gulaab") which tends to
descibe the beloved as "sundartaa ki harek pratima se baDh ke
tu hai sundar sajani".
now the only catch is, i am not sure how many of us dream of
simple faces. i know, i dream of only juhi and madhuri!! hey,
at least in dreams one should be allowed to be irrational :-)

Excellent lines, indeed. And yes, thanx.. they do complement the previous
lines very well..just those two lines by themselves didn't make too much
sense and made one think that it was a rather confused version of
'chaudhvin ka chaand ho..', but no, this is far superior, and I'm glad
you pointed it out.

Himalay ki god mein, picturised on 'puzzling/puzzled' actor Manoj Kumar.

Punctuation! Punctuation!! Good translation.
Anyway, look at this:
Khuda bhi aasmaan se, jab zamin per dekhta hoga
Mere Mehboob ko kisne banaya sochta hoga...
Well, it does not say that Mehboob was beautiful (or handsome
or whatever). Stress on _kisne_
Mere Mehboob ko _kisne_ banaya sochta hoga!
Aisa bad-soorat chehra to Mein kabhi nahin bana sakta!
Peace,
Arun
