Define "title songs". Kali Ghata (the Shankar Jaikishen one) had at
least 3 songs with the words "kaalii ghaTaa" in the lyrics.

If title song means words anywhere in the lyrics, forget it, because
full lyrics of vast majority of the 30s songs are not available and
will never be available.

However, if it means just the muKhaDaa then the questions are easy to
answer by consulting HFGK, if you have free time on your hands.

As I understand, a title song would be the one in which the film name
is in the mukhDaa and not anywhere. For example, Hariyali Aur Rasta.

whether the words of title of film appears or not ?

The second talkie is Shirin Farhad and there is a song 'main to
shiiriin kaa huuN diivaanaa'. Does that qualify?

the title song would specifically have the full title of the film
included. otherwise you could even have a leitmotif that is just a
tune but recurs throughout the film - which can be said to represent
the theme and hence fitted into a loose definition of title song.

so if it is aalam aaraa the song should have the word or sheeree.n
farhaad should have the two words juxtaposed (not in two separate
paras).

otherwise we are basically looking for the first hindi film with
songs.

while on the topic - do hollywood musicals have title songs - dont
remember any in the few that i have seen. so is this 'title song'
specific to the indian film industry?

The hills are alive with "the sound of music" are the first
words you hear as the camera comes upon Julie Andrews
against the wide open expanse of the Austrian Alps at the
very outset of the film.

Though the James Bond films are not musical, the song accompanying the
credits generally have the name of the film.

Singin in the Rain by Gene Kelly
"There's no business like Show business"
The wizard of oz has a song "the wonderful wizard of Oz"- i guess one
could consider that a title song.

I am sure there are many others

I wondering aloud if we can differentiate between the title song and
theme song. IMO, in some instances one song may be the title as well
as the theme song (in some it may be some tune, as suggested by you)
and in other instances they may be two different songs.

The song 'doston se pyaar kiya' (Shaan, 1980) is a theme song in the
film and recurs at least 3 times in it (beginning, around interval,
and end). This is also a title song of the film. The song 'pyaar
karne waale' has the word 'shaan' in the mukhada, but it is not really
a title song - it occurs rather quietly in the middle of the film. I
guess a title song typically shows up around the beginning of the
film. It might show up again, e.g. a tandem.

My query. The use of the film title in the mukhDaa of the song.

sound of music and singing in the rain are examples which slipped my
mind. but was there a song called come september ?

There is no song which has lyrics like: 'Come September'

Yes, there is an instrumental number, which plays along with the
titles of this film. The instrumental number is titled: 'Theme
of Come September' (exact title is in my big - song book).
It was composed ay Bobby Darin and conducted by him
along with his orchestra. The man played the 2nd lead
in this film.

The 45s of this song was not re-issued on any CD.

However, one can get the soundtrack version from
the VHS tape / DVD

Perhaps even more, because even the first film with songs, Jazz Singer
is listed as a drama and not a musical

Interestingly, the first one is hardly an appropriate theme song for
the movie. The last one fits the bill a lot better.

There are some instances of two songs in the film with the title in
the mukhaDaa, especially in case of Shankar Jaikishan, because both
Shailendra and Hasrat Jaipuri made use of the name of the film in
their respective songs.

Examples:
Anari
Asli Naqli
Hariyali Aur Rasta
Kanhaiya

Mere Mehboob (63) also had two such songs.

Anymore?

Do tandem songs count (e.g. barsaat kii raat)?

If so, Sagar has 3 title songs.

of the three songs featured that year, this was the only one in which
the hero interacts with his heroine (even if to be snubbed
initially)...shows how important interaction is :)
