Lata singing for me restores my dignity: Nadeem

After 14 long years, Indian film music queen Lata Mangeshkar has
recorded a song for composers Nadeem-Shravan for the film "Bewafaa".
And perhaps the most emotionally moved by the collaboration is
composer Nadeem Saifi for whom Lata had sung only once in the past.
"I can't believe Lata has sung for me after all these years. She sang
for me just once before in a film called 'Hisaab Khoon Ka'. And that
was years ago," Nadeem told IANS from London.
"She hasn't just sung my tune, she has given me back some of my
dignity," says the composer who has been in London ever since his name
was mired in allegations of links with the underworld.
"I was discussing the music of 'Bewafaa' with producer Boney Kapoor
and director Dharamesh Darshan. When I played the song 'Kaise piya se
main kahoon' to them we all felt only Lata could do justice to it.
"Bewafaa" features Anil Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor, Akshay Kumar, Lara
Dutta, Manoj Bajpai and Sushmita Sen.
"The song will be filmed with Kareena Kapoor. I feel Lata's singing
for me signals a new beginning for my life and career. I almost feel
like a newcomer again.
"I feel 2002 was a very special year for me. Besides hits like 'Yeh
Dil Aashiqana' and 'Dil Hai Tumhara' I also had the biggest musical
success of the year, 'Raaz'."
Tell him that "Raaz" was pretty pedestrian compared to his earlier
compositions, he says: "Yes, perhaps. But I still think 'Raaz' is
god's way of telling the award committees not to do injustice to my
talent this time. I know I'll get all the popular awards this year."
He even refuses to acknowledge the competition from "Devdas". "Yeah,
what about 'Devdas'?" Nadeem shoots back. "'Raaz' did to the music
industry in this millennium what our music for 'Aashiqui' did 12 years
ago.
"The songs in 'Raaz' made a small film into a huge success. And let me
tell you, had the music of 'Devdas' been done by me it would be a
historical film. I'd have done the music like another 'Mughal-e-Azam'.
"I feel the music of 'Devdas' failed to do justice to the vision and
grandeur of the director."
Nadeem feels his music will rule the charts in 2003. "My first score
for 2003 was 'Yeh Dil'. I've even sung a song in that film. I'm
looking forward to returning home to Mumbai. But they'd have to call
me honourably. My heart is clean. I'm more than willing to start all
over again."
Rumours are however rife about a growing rift with his creative
partner Shravan. But Nadeem refuses to comment. "Let's not start the
new year with these unpleasant things."
Many filmmakers and musicians in Mumbai say while Nadeem sends the
tunes from London, Shravan markets them on his friend's behalf.
But Nadeem said: "I won't comment on that, though I'll say one thing.
The truth about me, my talent, my life and my innocence will prevail.
God wouldn't want it any other way."

Nadeem seems to be taking in terms of "I". Isn't he
part of the team Nadeem-Shravan?
