You took me down memory lane. Boney M was my first 'Western' album. Or maybe
the second. First one could have been ABBA. Growing up in a small town, I
could find no other western album but these two. To my horror, I found out
that in the USA, no one had even heard of them. I could not find any CD in
Best Buy, Circuit City etc. Not even on Columbia House web site.

From what I know they were a German band. Later they split ( as most of the
bands do ).

Here is an excellent page where you can find everything that you ever wanted
to know about them.

Boney M were a little popular in the disco scene in Miami, in an
underground sort of way!

One of the reasons for BoneyM's popularity in India could also be the number
of songs that 'inspired' the MDs of that time. Or were they copied because
BoneyM songs were so popular? Any which way, I wonder if somebody does
remember those songs. Only one I can think of right now is "tere naaam ke ham
diivaane hai" based on "Brown girl in the rain, tra~la~la~la~la". There was a
whole bunch, IIRC.

BTW which song is Hari Om hari (sung by Usha Uthup, IIRC) based on?

The other one I can remember is "Jimmy Aaja" (film ?) based on "Sonny, I
love you". There was a legitimate (?) recording done by Mussarrat and
Mahendra Kapoor where they had gone through the entire gamut of Boney M
songs in Hindi/Urdu. The name of the album escapes me right now. I guess
this may have preempted others from using those tunes for their songs
(though that does not seem to be a deterrent these days. e.g. Tamma Tamma
and Jumma Chumma)

"One Way Ticket" by Neil Sedaka.
