That is a CD of the two long play records issued for Paakeezah - the first one
at the release of the film, and the other one called Paakeezah Rang Birang a
few years later. The second LP had songs recorded but not used in the film.
This also explains the total number of songs.
Chetan told you correctly that the film was a long time in the making (close to
12 years) and many of its songs were recorded way before the film's release in
1972.

the one with old lady dancing and all young ones teasing her was
"najaria ki maari mari mori gueeya". gueeya means friend.
i recall there was somewhere pieces of "dekh to dil ke jaa se uthta hai"
by great mehndi hassan himself. could anybody confirm.

it took 16 years in making, and you can make that out with nubile meena
kumari in "inhi logo ne", and the aged, defeated, mature meena kumari
when she returns from "roman holiday" having said no to nikaah with
rajkumar with shouts of "chappan chhuri" echoing in her ears. remember
the scene when she talks with her friend bibban about a patang (kite) on
a tree in her aangan.
i think first it was shot in b&w and then after half completion, was
abondoned and reshot in color.
meenakumari took a total of one asharfi (gold coin) as the remuneration
for the film.
music by gulam mohammed, background music by none other than naushad,
and some songs by naushad after death of gulam mohhammed (aaj hum apni
duaao ka asar dekhenge) are all of epical magnitude.
everybody speaks about the train letter of rajkumar to meenakumari,

Aah, yes, but Rafi's voice adds magic to the song that is missing in
Lata's solo version, which sounds almost bare.

The LP 'Rang Barang' had one more track that is missing in
the CD, a solo by Shamshad, written by Kaif Bhopali:

HMV could have gone for a higher-capacity CD to include this
song. Leastways, if they didn't have the marbles to do that,
they could have dumped the inconsequential Lata solo version of
"chalo dildaar chalo."
Or, if they had to have a Lata track, they could have included
the title music which has a lovely aalaap and taraanaa by Lata.
This can be heard in a cassette that HMV has since put out. I
hope Chetan will give details regarding it.

Don't know about that. Naushad's 'Aaina' came out in 1974 and had Lata.

'Pakeezah' soundtrack is a veritable treasurehouse of music. In addition to the
wonderful songs presented in the customary straightforward style--that is, in their
entirety--a large number of songs were embedded in the in the soundscript throughout.
Quite often more than one song can be heard at the same time! e.g., A song playing
in the bazaar with a different melody wafting in from a nearby kotha or more than
one singer doing riyaaz.
In 1977, HMV released an LP title 'Pakeezah Rang Barang', consisting of a number of
such songs and a variant recording--solo version of "chalo dildaar chalo" and a
recitation by Meena Kumari. I was very pleased when finally I got my hands on it
through the CD that packaged the two together (minus a Shamshad Begum song from
Rang Birang). It presents full versions of a number of gems that one gets to hear
only in snatches, often underlying dialogue or commentary, while watching the film.
But Rang Barang includes only a part of this treasure. For example, it omits even
the lovely taan by Lata during the film credits. If you try to record onto audio
using the video version of the film and include all portions that have interesting
music, it runs to far in excess of an hour and you get only bits and pieces of many
beautiful songs. Assuming that all the songs were recorded in full before being used as
background sound material, I think one would need two full-length CDs to present all
the music (perhaps more). I personally think it would be a more worthwhile project
for Naushad to undertake than some of his recent efforts.
{Another film that was Hollywood-ish in presenting songs in fragments as part of the
background score was the mid-1970s 'Shaq', the last soundtrack of Vasant Desai with
lyrics by Gulzar. Some of the fragments were exquisite. It's another film for which
I would like to see the filmmakers and HMV take the next Hollywood step of releaseing
the soundtrack as CD/cassette with complete versions of these songs.)
One of the gems from 'Pakeezah' yet to be heard in full is the Mir ghazal
"ye dhuaa.N saa kahaa.N se uThataa hai". Not sure who sings it. The scene starts with
"kaun gali gayo shyaam" in the background, which segues into this song. I don't remember
if the film credits gave a complete list of playback singers, but just based on the
released songs, the soundtrack features quite a few female singers. In addition to Lata,
we have: Suman, Vani Jairam, Rajkumari, Shamshad, Parveen, and Shobha Gurtu. (Have I left out any?)
I have never heard a full version of the ghazal. The following exchange --between
Vijay (he of the vijaykuma_r persuasion!) and Yogesh Sethi on ALUP--gives you a potential
soucrce. The opening sher was also discussed by Abhay Avachat, he of the legendary ASAS
series. (Where is he now?)

Mehdi Hasan has done a truely fanastic job with this GHazal.

So much 'dard' in just one Sher is possible only with 'Mir' Taqi Mir !
But very surprisingly, there are very very few GHazals by Mir which have been sung ! I don't remember anybody
except Mehdi Hasan
singing a GHazal by Mir. What surprises me, is not just because of the fact that Mir is perhaps the greatest of
all the Shayars. But his
GHazals are amazingly simple to understand and appreciate. Also, *music* is integral part of Mir's Shayari. His
style was
conversationalist, using more of Urdu and Hindi than Farasi. And the fluidity, the rhythm is always present.
About his style, the great Zauk (a contemporary of GHalib) said ...
na huaa, par na huaa, 'Mir' ka andaaz naseeb !
'Zauk', yaaroN ne bahut zor, GHazal me maaraa !!
In his compilation of "Deewan-e-Mir", Ali Sardar Jafferey says a lot about Mir's greatness in just one paragraph.
I cannot resist the
temptation of loosely translating it.
Shayar has been given the status of "KHuda ka shishya", and has been placed as "Paigambar" too. But Mir
Taqi Mir is the only
Shayar who is called as "Shayari ka KHuda" !! Mir is not the only one to be called as the greatest ever.
But still it's a fact that Mir
tops the list of Urdu Shayars. Today, Ghalib and Iqbal are more popular than Mir. Their books sell more,
their Shers are more
known. But the greatness of Ghalib and Iqbal has been challenged. But no Shayar in any period has dared to
challenge Mir's
greatness.
What a praise !
And if you are not yet convinced, here is one by GHalib ...
aqeedaa = belief
bakaule-'Naasikh' = according to Naasikh (another poet)
be-bahara = unfortunate/stupid
motakid-e-'Mir' = Mir ke prati shraddha rakhane_waale

Forget the Urdu, what GHalib says is - if you are not a worshiper of Mir, then you are stupid !!

Way back, I think in 1981, I attneded a live concert of Mehdi Hassan in Manchester, UK. He opened 'yeh dhUaaN sa
kahaN se uthta hai'
with a dohaa by Miira. I can't remember the words but it was a very
impressive mix of shudh hindi merging 'dhUaaN like' into urdu. Never heard it on any recording since.

An amazing claim by the director, for he does not give the viewer a
chance to miss the "irony"! There is a scene fairly early in the movie
where Saahib Jaan (Meena Kumari) goes to see a friend and tells her
about the note. The friend tells her, "us waqt tere pairo.n me.n
ghu.Ngaruu nahii.n ba.Ndhe ho.nge, waranaa koii kaise kahataa ke inhe.n
zamii.n pe mat utaariyegaa?" Or words to that effect.
Kamaal Amrohi was not one for subtlety: be it the "Madam" of the kotha
(Nadira) clipping the parrot's wings to make sure it couldn't fly off
again, or Saahib Jaan's dancing feet spreading blood all over the
courtyard of her father's house, or Shahaabuddin's (Ashok Kumar) coffin
playing the stellar role at his daughter's nikaah, he made his point
with the delicacy of a sledgehammer.

for that matter lata did sung in pakeezah itself, aaj hum apni duaao ka
asar dekhenge, which, i have read somewhere, was composed by naushad, as
is also quite noticeable from courtesan beats of instruments so like
naushad, and so unlike any other song of pakeezah.
people say that in this climax song meena really danced barefoot on the
broken chandellier glass and all that blood shining on the white
mattresses were meena kumari's real blood. could somebody add.
Lata not singing for naushad is a news for me. could you please fill me
more on it. the only negations i know is that.
1. lata never sang for OP nayyar.
2. lata had some tussle with SD berman and had not sung for him for a
long time. better sense prevailed since "allah tero naam" from hum dono.
3. lata boycotted for some time that md (was it KA) who got that bangla
desh singer (runa laila) sing the title song of "ek se badh kar ek".

today's newspaper (16/7) sadly mentions that shayar ali sardar jafferey
is suffering from brain tumour admitted in Mumbai hospital Room No 72/73
on 10th floor for last one month.
he is totally unable of speaking. he is not able to eat easily.
there are hardly any visitor except veteran shayars of his tenure, and
also Shabana aazmi whom he knew from her childhood.
what to say. so many of his contribution to the world of ghazals.
i urge to the power that be, to make him recover to his full potentail
soon.

i would conside this as the best ghazal by mehandi hassan, topping in
its simplicity and laconicity among stiff competition.

begum akhtar has sung Mir. "ulti ho gayee sab tadbeere kuchh na dawa ne
kaam kiya".

in kahkashaan, jagjit singh must also have sung at least one, though i
could not lay my hands on the cassette right now.
and there should be more by rafi, lata and ghulam ali. anybody?

simple? nope. but your urdu must be superb. for me he wrote very cryptic
lines, though worth every word. the time you need spend in finding out
the meaning of the words and in understanding the concept is well paid
once you understand the lines. remain drenched in the meaning for weeks.

thanks for clarifying. i have seen the movie several times but last was
at least 5 years ago. i remembered the ghazal very vividly being played
in the background. somehow i messed up in wrongly identifying that it
was by mehandi hassan.
i wonder why this was not included in the cd/cassette with arun. thanks
a lot arun, for posting the inlay card.
music in Pakeezah and its appropriate placement leaves you in a trance
never willing to come out of. all forms of music were there.
it will be a pleasure to know which contribution were by great Naushad
and which were by ghulam mohammed.
has Naushad given background music in any other film?
i see several members using mehdi hassan. shouldn't it be mehandi
hassan?

As I mentioned in my post, this song, like many others in the film,
is in a fragmentary form in the actual soundtrack of the film. For
these to become available as full songs, it would need to be the
case that the full song was recorded and the master-tapes were
saved. Then, of course, there will need to be some enlightened
soul as the business decision-maker.

"Great Naushad" and "ghulm mohammed"?
Read the post again. The breakdown for the songs released as
'Pakeezah' LP are given by HMV and they correspond to the information
in the Geet Kosh. As for the songs in the "Rang Barang", according
to Geet Kosh, which has been extremely reliable, all the songs were
composed by the "truly great, but unsung, music director" Ghulam
Mohammed. While 'Pakeezah' was the swansong of Ghulam Mohammed,
for the so-called "Great Naushad", 'Pakeezah' was his last hurrah;
there is nothing after that that you can listen to without feeling
embarrassed.

The only way SD Burman could "compose" that gem would be if he

Lata's solo version does sound bare but I am not sure if Rafi adds magic to
the duet. Lata herself sounds a lot better in the duet version than her

Naushad and they came back together after decades in a movie in the early
90s (I can't remember the name right now.) I don't know when it started

In fact, Vani's "Mora Sajan" and Parveen's "Kaun Gali" are played
simultaneously in the background. However I didn't find Rafi's solo, Rafi's

Rang-Birang being played at anytime in the movie. Does anyone have a
complete listing of all the songs played in the movie? There were 3-4
background songs at least (may be more) that I haven't heard before. I

That would be 'teri payal mere geet'. Lata had two solos.
I don't remember reading about any "tiff" between Lata and Naushad.
I remember the book mentions Lata thought Naushad was past his peak
and decided that she was not going to sing for him any more. I guess
she reconsidered when she herself went past her peak.

guess, abhi to main jawaan hu, that i am able to recall off hand, but
nothing great compared to the old greatness of naushad.

Ddheemie dheemie referes to a slow pace, if one is going in for a walk, for
example.
Bheenie bheenie, on the other hand, refers to the mild or low 'sharpness' or
'pungency' (for lack of better words) of the fragrance emanating from a
'pefume', or as in the case of this song, from the body of the beloved.
