In this clip on the TOI website:
- At 0:26, Lata says (with a completely deadpan expression on her
face): "mai.n ne sab se zyaadaa gaane gaaye hai.n bhuuto.n ke" ("I
have the sung the most for ghosts!") - it takes the interviewer a few
moments to catch on to the joke!
- A touching comment from Asha Bhosle (76 years old herself!) at 1:27:
"...[bahut zyaadaa] umr mere paas bhii nahii.n hai, lekin jitanii mere
paas bhagawaan ne umr dii hai, vo bhagawaan us ko de de.n" ("I don't
have too many years left myself, but whatever years I have remaining,
may god give them to her").
Warm regards,
Abhay
That's interesting. There used to an LP album titled "Haunting
Melodies" by Lata Mangeshkar. (Track list given below from Internet
site). What are some of her other 'ghost' songs (assuming she didn't
intend a pun in the word 'ghost')

The post-Mumtaz-death-"jo waada kiya woh" (from Taj Mahal) is also a
"ghost" song. Bina Rai's bedecked beauty descends from the moon

Hmm. I used to consider this a dream sequence song. Then again,
there's a thin line between dream and ghost. I guess if the character
in the dream is dead, that makes it a ghost song.
-pdg/
Surely, the songs "Rula Ke Gaya Sapna Mera" and " Rahen Na Rahen
Hum" are neither dream sequences or Bhoot songs.
A few more:
1. aa mere saathii aa (Chhalia, 1973) - Not sure if this song, filmed
on Nanda, is a ghost song but it sounds very much like one.
2. aa jaan-e-jaa.N mai.n kha.Dii huu.N yahaa.N (Goonj, 1974)
3. mai.n ek sadii se baiThii huu.N (Lekin, 1991)
4. yaaraa siilii siilii (Lekin, 1991)
5. mere nainaa saawan bhaado.n (Mehbooba, 1976)
6. ma.in huu.N diyaa (Jal Mahal, 1979)
7. There was a song filmed on Tanuja from a film that also starred
Feroz Khan. Forgetting the song and the film.
8. Was 'tumase bichha.Dake chain kahaa.N ham paaye.nge' (Maharaja,
1970) filmed on Nutan a ghost song? Never saw the film so I do not
know, but I love this MM composition a lot.
In Uran Khatola, (1953) heroine Nimmi dies early. Does any song
filmed on her later in the film passes as ghost song? I guess a ghost
song by definition is a theme song centrally related to the film's
main plot.

You're right, they aren't. Neither are "Aaja re pyaar pukare", "Mera
saaya saath hogaa" or even "aaja re pardesi."
One song that does fit the ghostly bill is "Saathi re tujh bin jiya
udas re" from Poonam Ki Raat.
Shalini
'tuu jahaa.N jahaa.N chalegaa' (Mera Saaya, 1966) and 'aajaa re
paradesii' (Madhumati, 1958) are both ghost songs, because they appear
again in the film when the respective ghosts of the heroines sing them
- and by the definition too they are indeed ghost songs. Note the
relevant words 'mai.n nadiyaa phir bhii mai.n pyaasii, bhed ye gaharaa
baat zaraa sii' and other haunting antaraas of this song. Ditto for
the Mera Saaya song.

Definitely not a ghost song. Before seeing the movie, I thought "aa
mere saathi aa" was one of those mollifying-the-rootha-sajjan songs a
la "na ja mere humdum", but the song picturization quickly set me
straight. :-)

Sajan kahan jaaongee main from Jaise Ko Taise in another entry from
the RDB stables.

Lata sings a snippet of "o door ke musafir" for the ghostly Nimmi at
the end of the movie.

It's been a while since I've seen either movie, but I don't think the
above is true. AFAIR, the only times "mera saaya saath hoga" plays in
the movie is when Sunil Dutt remembers/flashesback to Sadhana singing
it. I'm a little less sure about "aaja re pardesi" and the the
ghostly Vayjantimala might sing a few lines, but I do know that the
lines you've cited above are sung by the flesh-n-blood Vaiju at the
beginning of the movie.
Shalini
Actually, aaja re pardesi is a ghost song - isn't Vyiayanthimala
reborn in the film? It's been a decade since I've seen that film so I
could be wrong.
Not so often discussed : Na Ro Aye Mere Dil Yahaan - from the film
Zameen Aasmaan
Mere Nanhe, Mere Pyare Tujhe Apne
Aakhri Khat (1966)
Not sure I would class the Mahal songs as bhoot ones either as
although we assume Madhubala is a ghost throughout the film the truth
is revealed at the end.

'tujhako pukaare meraa pyaar' (Neelkamal, 1968). The line 'itane
*yugo.n* tak itane dukho.n ko koii sah na sakegaa', not to forget that
the legendary Sahir wrote it, aptly portrays a wandering spirit, just
like Gulzar did it superbly years later with 'mai.n ek *sadii* se
baiThii huu.N is raah se koii guzaraa nahii.n' (Lekin, 1991).
About Jamal's query about the Mahal song 'aayegaa aayegaa', it is a
ghost song too no matter what truth was revealed in the end - it was a
theme song supposedly sung by a ghost. By the way, the truth was
revealed for a few other songs too, e.g. 'gumanaam hai koii' (Gumnaam,
1965) and 'aa jaan-e-jaa.N' (Goonj, 1974), but they are ghost songs
nevertheless.
I never saw Noor Mahal (1967), but does Shyama plays a ghost in it?
She sings 'mere mahabuub na jaa' in it to a fearful Jagdeep who just
keeps widening his eyes wider and wider, probably thinking that this
was THE way to act.

There is no mention of Shyama.
