Thanks in Advance ... Vish
I do have the VCD, of Baadshaah (1964), a Dara Singh film.
In Delhi, I think Planet M (where exactly - Nehru Place amybe??) carries a
good inventory. Some stores in Palika Baazaar (Connaught Place) also carry
old films' VCDs. But, it is mostly hit or miss when you visit these
stores - you may find some you are looking for when you visit them.
I have an Excel list of all VCDs under the Shemaroo label - I can email it
to you if you wish.

I too am reminded of the simple and uncomplicated days of yesteryears
when I watch old black and white films. That is probably the only form
of time travel that is permitted to us mere mortals. :-)

I think this was Dara Singh's first appearance in a
movie. The film was released in (or around) 1953.
Just the previous year, there were a series of freestyle
wrestling matches staged in Bombay (IIRC, at Vallabhbhai
Patel Stadium) invloving several prominent wrestlers
from around the world e.g. King Kong himself (called
Man Mountain, weighing 399 lbs. or thereabouts), Boris
Orloff from Russia, Sardar Khan (from Pakistan), George
Pencheff (from South America, probably Brazil) and others
There were a couple of masked wrestlers like Flash Gordon
and Red Scorpion who would be unmasked by someone beating
them. Dara Singh had beaten all of them --- there were a
few drawn bouts too, to keep up the interest. Dara had
a fearsome "hold" or "daav" --- the aeroplane spin.
The makers of "Pehli Jhalak" wanted to cash in on the
popularity of this new style of wrestling (new to most
Indian spectators/moviegoers). In the movie too, Dara
is shown using his special "hold", aeroplane spin. The
hapless opponent was the aging comic/villain Om Prakash.
Afzal
I too want to watch the Dara Singh movie, which has the classic
dailogue:
'Maan Tu Raandi Ko Sambhal, Main Pulice Ko Dekhda Hoon'
This is the beauty, which inspired Hrishikeshda to write the comic
dialogue
for his film: ANAND -
Jeete Raho Beeta Ghatotkach
Can some Dara Singh Fan tell me, the name of the film, in which
Maan, Raandi and Dara Singh appeared.
Thanks
Sudhir
Clarification: Raandi = Rani (Queen)
Pulice = Police
Dekhda = Dekhta (will take care of)

Got them all at Rhythm House in Mumbai ... I had gone there after a
business meeting (and was dressed in business clothes) and was feeling
somewhat awkward asking for these. When I explained that I was going to
hold a global Dara Singh film festival, 5 other customers got very
intersted and joined me in the search and before long we were
reminiscing about the good old days .. the manager of Rhythm House then
called around and managed to get all the movies listed above .. as we
were searching, I found many other good VCDs (Naubahar, samrat
chandragupta, thodasa roomani ho jayen, usen kaha tha, buddha mil gaya,
jaali note, alibaba+40 thieves) ....could not get 'adventures of robin
hood' and Boxer ..but my newly found friends have said they will keep
looking .. After a really exciting evening of thumbing thru the entire
Rhythm House selection, we went and enjoyed Falooda nearby (well worth
it .. both the VCD search and the Falooda)
i have yet to unpack these VCDs but I will watch them all sooner or
later and will post the answer to the Q above one of these days ..
Vish
Welcome back, Vish. Your story about the visit to Rythm House makes me wish
plan a trip to India soon. :)
The one song I remember well from Badshah is the Kamal Barot number, "aaj
ham ko hansaaye na koyii, aaj rone ko jii chaahataa hai..".
BTW, is the Alibaabaa + 40 Thieves the one from the early 50's or is it also
the later one which Planet M in New Delhi sold to my wife insisting that
that was the only Alibaba..... film!
