Doston ko salaam, dushmanon ko salaam! (Thank Anand Bakshi for that:-)
Our specials today include two Shankar-Jaikishan entrees.
SJ's musical output was prodigious with a remarkably good signal to
noise ratio. I wouldn't characterize their music as profound or
inspirational (except in flashes) but it always had great rustic charm.
With a flair for composing simple, eminently hummable tunes, SJ's
music appealed to the romantic in all of us. They, more than anybody
else, defined the paradigm in Hindi phillum music in the 50s and
60s and Raj Kapoor, Mukesh, Rafi, Lata - all consolidated their stature
under SJ's baton.
Jaikishan was the more gifted one of the duo but washed himself away
with alcohol and eventually succumbed to it (1973? Cirrhosis of the
liver, was it??). "Mera Naam Joker" was his last film (though Shankar
composed later on under the SJ banner) and what a superb score that
was!
(Aside: I recently heard a "new" (well, it can't be new because KK is
a co-singer) song by KK & Lata. V.v.charming. "Mujhe tum yaad karnaa
aur mujhko yaad aanaa tum..." or something like that. Any details
will be appreciated and lyrics will be gleefully lapped up. How could
_I_ have missed a KK-song like that?:-).
Also: Any Hemant Kumar aficionado on the net? I've been looking
for the lyrics of two classics: "Hamein un raahon par chalnaa hain
jahaan girnaa aur sambhalnaa hai..."(film? lyrics? music?). And
"Janam se banjaaraa hoon bandhu janam se hoon banjaaraa, kahin ko'i
ghar na ghaat na angnaaraa..." (film? lyrics by Gulzar? music by
Hemant-da himself?).
Rafi-Sahab was a consummate master of these kinds of SJ compositions.

Daali dilon me dhadkan
Aur dil se dil milaayaa
Phir pyaar ka farishtaa
Duniyaa me leke aayaa
Gar tum.....
Jeevan ke har safar mein
Hum saath hi rahenge
Duniyaa ki har dagar par
Hum saath hi chalenge
Hum saath hi jeeyenge
Hum saath hi marenge
Gar tum.....
Phillum: Pyaar Hi Pyaar
Voice: Mohammad Rafi
Music: Shankar-Jaikishan
Lyrics: Hasrat Jaipuri

Mujhko mil jaayegi tu |
Jaise lehraaye sabaah |
Waise lehraayegi tu |(2)

The music director for "Mashaal" is Hridaynath Mangeshkar.
The film has another nice duet by Kishore and Lata; if I remember, the scene
is on the railway tracks and the 2 are running around in the rain with no
care about getting pneumonia. (Maybe since the health care system in India is
so good, the costs are not prohibitive. So who cares about a little illness in
the face of love :-) :-) :-) )

The song (I think) is from the old "Masoom" (remember `naani teri morni ko'...?)
*ing Manmohan Krishna and the cute Ranu Mukherjee who also sang the above
song. Music is by Hemant Kumar. Lyrics ??
