Batish saab worked closely with all the great personalities of hindi
film music.
Preetham asked what is the role of Asst.Music director:
Batish saab told that it is mainly rehearsing the singer, keeping track
of all tunes while composition is still going on. Mr.Batish was Asst MD
to Husnlal (correct me if I got it wrong) and later on became
fullfledged MD.
He liked OPN. OPN was a foreign (USA) returned those days and after
he reurned he was very very professional in business matters. He
appreciated OPNs rhythmic music. Also OPN always preferred the first
take in recording a song. He did'nt like lots of retakes. To this
question we asked who was very strict and perfectionist. He replied
that Anil Biswas,Naushaad,MM,Roshan,SC were like that.
Then we asked about Sajjad Hussain. He said he was a great MD and a
mandolin player himself. Whenever his song was a great hit, it seems
he used to say that 'Did I compose a cheap tune. All people are able
to sing in 15 minutes?'.
We also asked his opinion on Asha and Lata. He replied that both are
great singers and they their greatness lies in 'catching' the tune
immediately and fast when a song was composed. The other comparison he
made was that 'masti' and 'harqat' of Asha's voice and Lata's style.
He sang two little tunes and illustrated how Asha could have sung and
the same by LM.
We then drew his attention on Lata's success. he attrubuted it
purely to her melodious voice, merit and _nothing_ else.
He has special praise for KK's comedy singing. He recalled some of the
songs which he composed and sung by KK but never made it to the world
as the producer (funny name. I forgot) went bankrupt (correct this
sentence if wrong).
Mr.Batish has great reverence for Indian Music and he stressed on
the 72 (melakarta raags) where unlike in hindustani classical we have
3 're's etc. He is currently doing some project on that.
Later on we were shown their studios (audio and vedio).

Thanks Harish for the report. Some more additions.
Note that a lot of info on Pandit Shiv Dayal Batish and his
contribution to film as well as classical music can be found
in the Batish's web site:
The site also has articles on his association with Lata, Rafi, Talat
and also some rare photographs.
On to the meet. It was great meeting somebody with Pt Batish's accomplishments
both in Hindi films and in classical music.
Having been a music director (and Asst. MD) as well as a singer he worked
closely with many MD's as well as singers and he shared a lot of those memories
with us. This is also because in those days the singers had to rehearse a lot,
often at the MD's place, so they were often close friends with the MD.
He was assistant to Pt. Amarnath, a very close friend and relative of his.
He has the hit song "Khamosh nigahen" in the film "Daasi" with Pt. Amarnath.
Husnlal and Bhagatram, brothers of Pt. Amarnath were his close friends. He
practised singing with Husnlal. On passing he mentioned that Husnlal had
trained Lata before she made it big.
Pt. Batish worked in Lahore and was well aquainted with Ghulam Haider, Shamshad
Begum etc. He recalled Ghulam Haider being a nice man and a very talented
composer. In his teen years he used to sing in Sehgal's style and was
known as "young Sehgal". He spent about a week with Sehgal when he was on
Vacation (near Poona). He recalled that Sehgal was a very generous man.
He had also worked with Suraiya, Khurshid, Mubarak Begum etc. He couldn't
work with Noor Jehan as she was in a different camp.
Some of his recollections of the MD's and singers:
His favourite MD: S.D. Burman
Geeta Roy: "Bahut achhi ladki thi".
K. Datta: A very talented composer.
Roshan: Roshan's full name is "Roshanlal Nagrath". His wife's maiden name
was Ila Moitra. She was a good friend of Panditji's wife.
He composed in a film with Kishore Kumar and Nutan in 1952. It would've been
Nutan's debut and I think the first of KK in a lead role. KK liked the songs
a lot but the film never saw the light of day due to the troubles of the
producer Mr Tragedywalla.
He also talked about some other people and on topics which I don't remember
right now.
He also talked about his research in classical music and Ashwin Batish
told us what they were doing at the Batish Institute. With no knowledge of
classical music I can't talk about classical music without making errors.
In brief he talked about the 72 thaats and how they were reduced to 10
in Hindustani classical. He attributed it largely to the difficulty of
playing them in various musical instruments. He mentioned that Western
music is based on 2 thaats and Iranian on one (Bhairavi).
He felt that a lot of classical music knowledge was lost as it was passed
by word of mouth in the gharaanas, through Shlokas etc. Thus he has written
an encyclopaedia of 3000 ragas called "Ragopedia" and has also sung them.
We returned with a lot of appreciation for the Batish family's contribution
to classical music.
Please let me know if there are any errors in the report.

I think the line is "Pyar hame bhi sikhalaa degaa..."

--Vishal Ailawadhi
My brother once came up with this unforgettable translation for this line:
Don't ever change your saari, come what may!!
Just felt like sharing what has long been the high point of this song for me!

"What do I play in then, the bhainski ang?"
Dinkar
e.g. in the song "Chhup gaye taare nazare Ui kya baat ho gai" It's antara goes
something like this.
"Amua ki daali pe gaaye matwali.."
Now isn't it true, that only a drunk (Matwali) Cow (gaaye) would be attempting
to climb a Mango (Amua) tree's branch.
Hope people can add more here.... :-)

Hindi lessons had just started for me in primary school when the film
'Mitti Mein Sona' came along. For I don't remember how long, I thought
it meant 'sleeping in the soil'!
The sequel to the story is very recent. Met a UP woman (presumably her
native language is Hindi) at a party. She thought (and perhaps still
thinks) 'sleeping ..' is indeed what the film title means!

Reminds me of an occasion when I was sharing a DTC bus seat with a
classmate. As the bus passed over the Safdarjung flyover, a huge new
hoarding came into view. It bore an ad for a new film. "Faasle", I read
aloud the film title. "Na, tu faasle", my friend replied.
Not to mention the occasion when a friend was found singing loudly
from inside the loo:
"aasmaan ke neeche, hum aaj apne peechhe,
puaar ka jahaan, basaa ke chale.."
