Dear All,

As the grandson of the main editor of the late shama magazine which
was being published in urdu, i am regret to concur with your
observation that the magazine has been discontinued closing to the new
millenium due to unforeseeable circumstances.

Thank you for the support you had shown through the years as a reader
of our magazine.

It is not clear exactly what you want to convey. You "agree" with our
observation (that magazine was discontinued around year 2000) or you
are giving us this news 10 years too late?

Because you say you are the grandson of the main editor of Shama
magazine, I am glad to see you here. Will you please tell us the name
of your editor grandfather? And may I know what happened to all those
issues from '60s through '80s? Did your family care to archive at
least one copy somewhere? I was a huge fan of Shama in the '70s and
want to collect all those 120 issues from the '70s if you can help me
find them. Send me personal email if necessary. Thanks.

Hello Asif, I think you are really testing the memory of Ovais Dehlvi
asking him to recall his grand fathers name !

If you receive bound copies from 1960 to 1980 of Shama from Ovais
Dehlvi, please let us know.

Thanks a lot for the link, Professor Sahab. I just finished reading
her blog (from the link on her wikipedia page) and just loved her
interview (4th link in External Links section). I would hate to
contact her via my comment on her blog (never did it on any blog). Is
there any other contact info (email, phone, street address)
available? I believe she is the right person to inquire about Shama
magazine. I already sent email to Ovais Dehlvi but no response so
far.

Talked to Mr Mohamad Unas Dehlvi who lives in Gurgoan. Closure of
SHAMA came in unsual rather tragic circumstances, all records have
been lost. " sub kutchh bikhar gaya '.

Thanks Monbhai. I read afew issues of Shama around 1945-1947. It was
a successful Magazine. The editor had a personal animosity against
Mehboob the film director, perfectly unjustified. I am surprised that
Shama lasted as long as it did. The Urdu reading and writing was
doomed after 1947, and by the time this magazine folded there may not
have been many Urdu readers in India. i don't know anything about the
tragic circumstances that you have hinted at.
Regards.

In India, we may be very good at building / creating exceptional
things, but are very poor at preserving them. Take the case of films,
one wonders how many films of the silent era, early talkies and even
from the 40s and 50s have been preserved? When I was a teenager, I
remember watching many Hollywood films of the silent era and early
talkies (Sunday morning shows).

Indeed, archival preservation of material (especially paper documents)
is not well looked after in India. A long time ago, I was reading an
interview with the music director Ravi. Apparently, his basement,
where he kept all of his documentary records, got flooded and he lost
all contents. He was trying to re-build his musical documents from
memory. Think of all the music directors who are no more (Naushad, C
Ramchandra, Shankar Jaikishan, SD Burman, OP Nayyar, Salil Chaudhary
and so forth). Whatever happened to their documents? At least Madan
Mohan's family is trying to preserve his memories (www.madanmohan.in)
as is Talat's son. In the United States, it is a big event when some
famous writer, music composer, or lyricist donates (or sometimes
sells) his/her paper documents to a university library.

MLK means Yunus Dehlvi, the original publisher and owner.

Think of his father.. Yousaf Dehlvi who was chief editor
and most probably its owner too. Yunus then used to answer
readers questions and also do the reviewing of new movie
released. I still remember the headline of Andaz's review:
'har chamakdaar cheez sonaa nahin hoti'. About Alif Laila
he wrote: 'hazaar se bhi ziyaadaa GhaltiyaaN. Khuda dushman
ko bhi aisii film na dikhaay'.
If I am not much mistaken Saadia Dehkvi was Younus's wife.

Yes, you are right. I read his review of Andaz and as you say he
criticised it out of personal animosity. All the readers knew what
the truth was.

I think that the contributors to Youtube are mostly young, posting
their favourites, with some seniors with their choices of early
music. Prof's web site is there for RMIMers to listen to. Why should
the prof post his music on Youtube ? He can of course do what he
wants !

I live in U.S. This morning my friend asked me urdu word for lady devil. I replied as "Chudail or Daayen". The word "Daayen" immediately remind me of a Serial Novel with the name "Khoobsurat Daayen" which was published in the early 1980's in "Shama Magazine". Even though we are not from fluent Urud-Speaking places like Hyderabad, Luchnow or Delhi; we hail from Kadapa which is in south of Andhra Pradesh with sizable muslim population with a different dialect of urdu. Some member of my joint family used to subscribe this magazine and my sisters used to read out stories, novels from it. It was part of our household for some years. I googled for this magazine and found "http://www.milligazette.com/Archives/01012002/0101200231.htm".
