Hi,

I don't understand any Marathi but there is a song which I remember for
some reason, perhaps because of the tune.

The refrain goes like "Ballo re nakwa ho wallo re rama", but that is
all I know about it.

Can someone provide me some information about this song? Is this a
movie song, folk song ? Can I have the lyrics from someone?

Thanks
Vivek

Hi,
I was browsing by and chanced upon your post. This is a Marathi fishing
community's folk song. I don't know if it has appeared in any movie or
not, but it is on Lata Mangeshkar's album "Geet Shilp". The refrain
goes - "Mee Dolkar Daryacha Raja", sung by Lata and Hemant Kumar. I do
understand Marathi, but am no expert. I'll let someone else do the
translating - but here's a link to the lyrics, from a long ago post on
RMIM:
http://groups.google.com/group/rec.music.indian.misc/browse_thread/thread/3a63f3937e9ebabe/#.

Hope the link works - if not google for Dolkar Daryacha Raja - you'll
get plenty of links.

Vivek,

This is a very famous Marathi Song of late 1960s. It is a non-film
light song. Countless variety programs have performed this songs on
stage, especially by young school girls in their school social
gatherings.

The music is by Hridaynath Mangeshkar and it is sung by Lata and Hemant
Kumar with chorus. It is one of the best song in a non-Marathi Male
voice. Hemant Kumar's broad and somewhat serious voice and Lata's
short and supple sweet voice are contrasing and complementary at the
same time.

You can hear it at following url

http://www.musicindiaonline.com/l/21/m/type.15/

I hope this helps.

cheers,

Hi

Well my mother tongue is not Marathi and surely not Koli Marathi, so I
can't translate the song completely. My mother tongue is Konkani and
the fact that I was born in Bombay helped a bit. I would be glad if
somebody corrects the translation, since some of the words are foreign
to me and I've understood them only in the given context, which should
not be correct at all. for e.g., the very opening lines: Valhav re
nakhava ho valhav re rama. Further words for which I can't vouch are:
"daryaachaa darara motha", "Kava udan vara shirala yetay faru, kava
panyasuni aabhala firatay taru", "bhartar maajaa" and "mhavara taja"

I hope it helps

regards
Pramod

P.S.: Can anybody tell me how I can post a table?

In article <1144778935....@i39g2000cwa.googlegroups.com>, Pramod

Two nit-picks!

>Lata Aaibapachi larachi lek me lari, Choli pivali go nesalaiy anjiri
>sari...2 (I'm the dear daughter of my parents; my blouse is yellow
>and have a fig-coloured sari on)

I hear it as "ek me lari"--I am the only daughter of my parents. I could be
wrong.

>Nath nakan sajirvani, Gala bharun sonyache mani...2 (My ear ring is
>very decorative and my neck is full with golden beads)

Should be nose ring methinks. Nath=nose.

It is "lek" (daugther). Not sure what lari means.

"nath" = nose-ring; "naak" = nose! :)

The song was released in 1969 on an EP, Titled: KOLI GEET. It has
3 songs:

1 Raja Saranga Mazya Saranga / Lata

2 Vadal Varn Sutal Ga / Lata + Chorus

3 Mi Dolkara Daryacha Raja / Hemant Kumar, Lata + Chorus (It
is
over 6 minutes long song)

The song # 2 is not on my like list. The other two I have it since
1969 or so.

I am from Punjab, so can not figure out the lyrics, though they are
printed on the back of EP. Well, it makes no difference. The music
and singing is so good, that almost everyone I know likes these 2
songs.

Incidentally, for song # 3, there is a version song in Bengali /
Singers:
Hemanta Mukhopadhyaya, ?? = Chorus

Though it is a typical marathi fisherman's song, the Bengali version
of this cassette was released
sung by Heamanat and Lata.

Sudhir,

Very interesting information about the EP. There is a "sister"-record
7EPE 1134 released in 1970 in Bengali with the following tracks:

Music: Hridaynath M, Lyrics SalilC

Side 1: (Lata solo)
1. o go maa ganga maa go maa ganga ((bengali version of song #1 above)
2. baadal kaalo ghiralo go (bengali version of song #2 above)

Side B: Hemant+Lata
1. De dol dol dol (bengali version of song #3 above)

I have the three Marathi songs you mention on CD, and the Bengali EP
but I never realized that these songs were an almost simultaneous
release on EP in both lanugages.

FWIW, the lyrics of the hemant/lata duet in Bengali have a different
meaning than the one in Marathi. Realized this after Pramod's
translation.

I have the song # 3 - Bengali (Hemant + Lata) on one of the CD / Salil
Choudhury

You have mentioned song #s A 2 and B 1, without the chorus, but
most probably they are with the chorus.

Incidentally, how do you rate the Bengali versions vs. the originals.
I assume that you too are unfimiliar with this Marathi dialect.

Can we please make a list of songs in Hindi which has a Bengali
counterpart and the lyrics are the same ?

Some of them come to my mind are ( please reconfirm the following 2 ) :

1) O Amaar Sojoni Go (Swarnatrisha) - O Mere Saathi Re (AakhriBadla)
2) Mone Pode Shei Shob Din (Swarnatrisha) - Man Kare Yaad Woh Din
(AakhriBadla)

Some unreleased Hindi songs could be the following two from the
unreleased film, Suhaana Geet ( lyrics by Shailendra )
3) Bolo Kemon Kore Je Jomlo (Non-Film) - Are Kidhar Chale Ho Aaj
4) Aaj Ghore Deep Jole (Non-Film) - Deep Jale Deep Bujhe

please add more

They are indeed w/ chorus.

I do understand a few Marathi words here and there but evidently, the
lyrics endear me to the Bengali songs more. Renditionwise (that is
beyond the language, tune/singingwise), I feel Lata has done a better
job in the bengali version in A1, better in Marathi in A2, and B1 is
perhaps a tad better in Marathi.

Speaking of comparisons: B1's Bengali version is also a fisherman's
song. But unlike the Marathi lyrics that describe things like dresses,
ornaments and the fishing process, SalilC makes the lyrics a dialogue
describing the social oppression of the female and hardships faced by
the male(fisherman's profession) - which prevents them from getting
united in marriage. Felt this to be a more interesting theme.
