After doing the initial listing of the names, I had got a Beta Test
done with a few RMIMers. After getting their responses, I have
modified the list and the corrected list is given below. As you can
see, right now I have got 96 names in the list. So feel free to
add/drop someone if you think it will make the list more accurate.
I have divided them into four categories for your convinience. In the
final list there will be no category as such and all the names will
appear together. Hence lets not discuss if Hemant Kumar should belong
to the MD category instead of Singer etc.
Please give me the inputs, it will be highly appreciated. Also please
suggest the Year of Birth (And Death, if applicable) for the
personalities if you know.
Thanks in advance

one more suggestion that came up: Why not include one south Indian

I am sure there will be many many suggestions, involving
deletions and additions. For the tume being, I would only
request you to please check the spelling of a few names
before putting up the site. This is the least we owe to the
music legends being commemorated. This is not intended as
nitpicking, please.
Some Examples :
KHaiyyam and O.P. Nayyar (an additional 'y' in the names)
Alka Yagnik (no need to replace 'k' with 'c')
Zohrabai Ambaalewali (not Johra or Ambaalawali)
Shamshad Begum (Not 'Samshad' & 'Beghum')
JaaN Nissar and Jaaved : Both names end with "AKHtar"
and not "AKHtaar"
Suresh Wadkar (not 'Wadekar'. I don't think he is in
any way related to the former Indian
Cricket Captain).
Afzal
Singers(M): Add Shailendra Singh, Amit Kumar, Sonu Nigam(?)
Drop Master Madan, CH Atma(?)
Singers(F): Add Vani Jayaram, Hemalata
Drop Meena Kapoor, Rajkumari
MD: Must add Sardar Malik
Lyricist: Add Naqsh Layalpuri
Reasons:
Shailendra Singh: Quite a number of memorable and popular songs. "Mai
shayar to nahi" and other Bobby songs, "Gunche lage ho
kehne.."(Tarana),....
Amit Kumar: Though could not survive, has given a good number of songs
starting from "Bade achchhe lagte hai..."(Balika Badhu) through Love
Story songs and other 80s hits.
Sonu Nigam(?): Not quite following the present genre singers but he
appears to be in the reckoning.
Master Madan, CH Atma : Can't remember valuable contributions from
them
Vani Jayaram, Hemalata: If we stretch a female singers list beyond
2(Lata, Asha), I feel Vani Jayaram and Hemalata should make it. Can't
forget "Bole re papiharaa..." and many of those "Rajshri Prod" songs
of Hemalata.
Meena Kapoor, Rajkumari : Can't remember valuable contributions from
them
Sardar Malik: Has produced memorable songs as mentioned in an earlier
post
Naqsh Layalpuri(Lyallpuri): Has written some quality songs like "Dard"
songs.

I won't make any suggestions for deletions - there are names on your
list that don't exactly seem to me to be "luminaries" (including one
or two for which the term "pest" would come more readily to my
mind)... but doubtless some have enjoyed their activities... and it
is, in case, preferable to accentuate the positive.
I would suggest, myself, that you should not drop C.H.Atma, although I
see that has been suggested. IMO he had a very fine voice, and did
make a notable contribution to film music, albeit that his scope was
not wide.
I also don't really believe Parul Ghosh and Ram Gangoli should be
dropped - both of them were responsible for songs I number amongst my
personal favourites.
In terms of music directors, I'd suggest the following for
consideration:
Bulo C. Rani (Jogan, Al Hilal...)
Snehal (Hamari Yaad Ayegi, Suhaag Raat...)
Hansraj Behl (Changez Khan, Inqilab, Sawan...)
Babul (Nakli Nawab, Reshmi Roomal...)
In the area of lyricists, you might consider:
Zia Sarhadi (Yaad Rakhna Chaand Taaron)
Wali Sahab (Neend Hamaari Khwaab Tumhaari)
J. Nakshab (Ayegaa Aane Waalaa)
Khumar Barabankvi (Gham Diye Mustaqil)
Behzad Lucknavi (Zinda Hun Ys Tarah)
When it comes to female singers...
Salma Agha (small contribution, true, but distinctive)
Kanan Devi
Khurshid
Zohra Bai Ambala
Surinder Kaur (lovely voice.. but not many Hindi film songs)
Shanta Apte
As for the male singers... K.C. Dey is really the only obvious
omission that comes to mind... although I suppose an argument might be
made for Ashok Kumar, for his contributions as a singer before the
dawn of playback.

Secondly, posters are touting candidates based on one or two
songs which they happen to like. This is highly undesirable. Ali
Akbar Khan is a genius. His one song alone from Aandhiyaa.N,
hai kahi par shadmani - sung by Lata, is enough to announce his
pedigree. But is there really any case to include his name in the
list? His association with Film Music is too insubstantial for that.
As for those who are boasting that so-and-so should not be
included because s/he does not know anything about some
worthy musical figure, they should understand that they are
students and should try to learn instead of presuming to advise.
How many of these self-appointed advisors have taken trouble
to acquaint themselves with pre-1951 music? Buzurg rmim-ers
(Afzal Khan sahab, Kalra-ji, Vish) who are well placed to judge
contributions of pre-1951 personalities should be the only ones
who pass judgement on them. I am not sure whether Meena
Kapoor or Timir Baran or D N Madhok should be included
or not. But that ignorant fellows haven't even heard of these
people cannot be a reason to exclude them. This is not a Miss
India contest where anyone can sit in judgement, look at the
contestants' vital measurements, sleep with as many of them as
the kind God allows, ask some questions about motherhood,
World Peace and ozone layer and then cast vote.

statements above apply to you as regards modern music/musicians as much as it
does to those who are ignorant of pre-1970s luminaries.

How noble of you to dispense this advice instead of taking it. I wonder how much
time you have spent getting acquanited with music/musicians of the post-70's era
before gassing about it.

This is stupid. You are sitting here and assuming that people who are not of
that era have no knowledge and hence no right to pass judgement. There are many
'buzurg' RMIMers/non-RMIMers out there who are well placed to judge
contributions of musicians of the Golden Era who make a hash of it too as well
as many 'non-buzurgs' who are excellent an excellent judge of some talents. One
does not have to be born in 1900 to be able to pass a judgement on Einstein's
theories. In short Nani, put a lid on it.
This whole exercise is quite futile, since it is subjective. Whereas Chetan
feels Nadeem-Shravan and some others should be dropped, we have others who have
not even heard of Saraswati Devi, Parul Ghosh, etc. There are as many 'Taliban'
members of the pre-70s as there are of the post-70s. If at all something like
this is going to be attempted seriously, there has to be a minimum set of
standards put in place before one can include/exclude people on that list. In
cricket we do have a minimum of 100 wickets and a minimum of 3000 runs before
someone is considered on an "all time best" list.
Better to spend some time constructing that 'minimum set of requirements' first
before populating that list.
Ketan
I am not going to argue against the inclusion of any names in your list...
A few names that were notable omissions in my opinion :
MDs Lyricists Singers
Rajkamal D N Madhok Chitra
Gyan Dutt Kedar Sharma Chitra Singh
Hridaynath Mangeshkar Yogesh Gaud Sukhvinder
Dattaram S H Bihari Narendra Chanchal
Vanraj Bhatia Mehboob Runa Laila
Sudhir Phadke Varma Malik Uma Shashi
S N Tripathi Naqsh Lyallpuri Khursheed
Sardar Malik P L Santoshi Shailendra Singh
Datta Korgaonkar Tanvir Naqvi Jaspal Singh
Khumar Barabankvi
Nakshab
Aarzoo Lucknowi
Pt. Indra
And then there are the unwitting contributors and memorable one-offs. Do you
include Bhimsen Joshi, Bade Ghulam Ali Khan, Ghalib, Jigar, Faiz, Meera,
Ravishankar, Ali Akbar Khan, Vilayat Khan and others? I leave you to grapple
with these questions.
About resources, the ISB has made baby steps in the direction of creating a
web resource with biographical sketches, but you would be well advised to look
at Sami's page, and at dhadakan.com (links to both of these from the ISB Links
section) for more info on biographical details. Also, there is probably no
resource like Shri Hamraz for this.
I am presuming that this is not merely a labour of love, that it is also some-
thing that you are taking up as part of your job. In which case, engage Shri
Hamraaz as a consultant and ensure that he gets both credit and cash for his
involvement.
One last word, I hope you will check the spellings of the names again before
publication... for example it should be Zohra not Johra...

People well acquainted with Golden Era (1936-1955) music may not
always get it 'right'. This is a highly subjective topic. But at least they
are familiar with the music. You may or may not like their opinions.
That is a different issue altogether.
But what is Rawat doing? He asks who Saraswati Devi is. He asks
who is he/she re. Parul Ghosh. If he doesn't know, that is okay. But
then he grandly tells 'new people haven't heard of R C Boral' as if
that is a revealation to us. You call it 'being an excellent judge of
talent'?
Whether you like Rafi-Talat-Kishore-Mukesh, whether you have heard
of them or not, they all would walk into a list of 100 leading figures.
Same is true of Rai Chand Boral, Ghulam Haider and Khemchand
Prakash. There are fellows who genuinely like classical music, but
have not heard Alladiya Khan-sahab's name. So what? The least they
should do is to not base any argument upon ignorance. That too on
a forum like rmim where so many people offer excellent historical
perspective - Vish on any era, Kalra-ji with his encyclopaedic
knowledge of 1950s and 1960s and myself on post-1970 scene.

I think Bhimsen, Bade Ghulam, Ghalib, Meera, Ali Akbar are no-no.
Meera, Ghalib never did anything for films. They are part of Indian
soil now and their massive influence pervades so many spheres. Let
us be grateful for that. But they have no place on this list.

And on the other hand we have people like Nalin Shah, who dismiss everything
that came after 1950. For him all that seems to exist are Saigal, Naushad and RC
Boral. You call THAT an excellent judge of talent?

There are people who could say "whether you like Sanu, Udit or Abhijeet, they
all walk into a list of 100 luminaries". Why is that statement anymore right or
wrong than yours? Once again, I am interested in the WHY of the list? Why should
anyone be included? Lata does not figure in OPN's list. Does that make her a
lesser singer? Rafi hardly shows up in Anil Biswas's list and Mukesh in SDBs.
The common man barely knows KP beyond 'Mahal'. Why should be there in that list
then? One can design a list to include/exclude whoever one wants. IMHO, that is

You have long hands--long enough to pat yourself all over. I have seen no
"knowledge" coming out of you. Merely information. Once again, I request you to
"can it".

I think Neha is right in her comments to Swaraj because:
1) She is the current co-ordinator of RJGK-s and has every right
to do so.
2) Swaraj gave his RJGK without beta-testing (since "it had n errors"
which would have been revealed in a beta-test) but he is going to lengths
to beta-test a self-constructed list of 100 "luminaries". If he
wants to construct a list, he is welcome, but after seeing zillions
of such lists, I am not sure about the credibility of such lists
anymore. Hosting an good RJGK is a credible and commendable effort tho'.
3) Swaraj imposed a stringent deadline when he wanted the answers.
The hint-less part of the quiz was due in 9 days...only 1 weekend
intervening...a pretty tough time-scale, and it was no easy ordeal
to crack the clues just given some lines.
But when it came to him to post the 2nd part of the quiz, he lagged
by several days beyond his promised date, without bothering to reply
to email queries or clarifying on RMIM the reason for the delay...
enough to kill any interest remaining (at least on my part) to answer
part 2 of the quiz (which I wouldn't require to attempt if Swaraj
hadn't made a mistake about the number of heroines against
DevA in his questions in the intro part of the quiz).
As regards the merits of RJGK61 (wrong hints, repeated movies,
discrepancy of statistics at the intro of the quiz
with the questions therein, erroneous questions etc.) can be
the subject of another post.
Of course, this post is not to deter people who haven't conducted an
RJGK before from conducting RJGK's, but they must have the understanding
to conduct it without compromising standards and learn to live up
to their words.
> Do all ladies have this skill.
BTW, is the nature of your(Rawat) wives' treatment to you an
appropriate topic to discuss on RMIM?:)

Yes, I do get (and others should also be) peeved when I(they)
put some effort into something and the person responsible takes a
lackedaisical attitude. But I don't think that
should be enough grounds for you to suggest a change
in the name of this ng.

1. You are a pervert.
2. Your male chavunism is too prompt in undermining feminine kind. You
have projected onto the judges what you see or think or wish to do in a
miss India contest, your age permitting.
3. You think all awards are given by judges on the basis of only
criteria of sleeping with the contestants. Do you believe that same
criteria rules in music awards also.
4. as there are female judges also, you imply that lesbianism is galore
in the world.
5. My God is having better things to do than deciding who sleeps with
whom. Don't know about yours.
6. if you ever become a judge in Ms india contest, you are in for a big
disappointment.
issue an apology for this juicy statement of yours.

Luminary implies shining, visible, known to all. Thus, along with
artistic merit, propularity must be a criteria.
Or, the title of the list can be changed to drop this word, and make
list based on only merit without any consideration of popularity, even
if they are one song wonders. Then Kabban Mirza, Qateel Shifaee, faiz
Ahmed faiz etc, many can be included.

At least that is how I interpret it. Maybe the initiator of the thread
could share with us what he had in mind when he included "luminary" in
the title.

1 I don't know why you picked up the number 100.
In Hindi films, 108 is the auspicious number. If you can move to
such higher level of achievement, there is good chance that some
holy 'Sadhu Baba' from Himalayas, will bless your endeavor.
2 For the additional 8 names, you can add another category:
Directors or Director / Producers or Producers
Let's not forget that the director, and in some cases the producer
gives the final approval at the every stage of song creation. Some
of
the artists listed below are legendary in terms of getting the best
from
the MDs and in song picturization.
Guru Dutt Music + Picurization
Raj Kapoor
Vijay Anand
- - -- -- - -- - -
Mehboob Khan Music only, song picturization
A.R. Kardar was not that great
V. Shantaram
--------------------
Chetan Anand Generally good music and in
Nasir Hussain some cases. street-music
Raj Khosla
----------------------
S. Mukherjee Producer only
He was part-owner: Bombay Talkies,
Filmistan, then owner:
Filmalya
and S. Mukherjee Film Synd)
Complete albums of many of his films are still easily
available, starting from Kismat / Anil Buswas to Leader /
Naushad
To the best of my recollection, only two major MDs didn't
compose
for his production companies: Shankar-Jaikishan and
not-any-good
son of his partner: ? (will leave it as a quiz or will
post it
in next message).

I'm curious about this. What sort of street music? Can you
recommend specific films?
TIA,

LR Eswari was a famous singer - who was very busy in South Indian
films till the mid 80s. She was very good at cabaret and night-club
songs. In fact she was branded a night-club singer before she turned
to devotional and semiclassical music.
A good singer. If the list includes only Hindi cinema, then she need
not be included - but if its IFM in general, then she ought to be
included.
Similarly for VJ - I feel she need not be included in a list of
contributors to Hindi cinema. I like her for her songs down South.
Indeed she is my favourite. But her HIndi songs are quite accented.

The film had the "Buniyaad" lady Anita Kanwar.
And a very fine song in this film was
picturised on her. Can't recall the exact words
but a rather melancholy tune, talking of night,
loneliness etc. Do you or any one else
know the lyrics ? Thanks.
Afzal
Please note that the suggested names are of directors, producer/directors
etc.
The street music is related to steeets of Bomaby. To understand their
type of music, you have to listen to music from films like:
Tumsa Nahin Dekha, Dil Deke Dekho, Jab Pyar Kisi
Se Hota Hai, Caravan (Nasir Hussain)
C.I.D., Mera Gaon Mera Desh (Raj Khosla)

"chaa.Ndanii raat bhar jagaayegii, aaj phir nii.nd nahii.n aayegii" - sung
by Chhaaya Ganguly. Lovely song indeed .
Warm regards,
Abhay
Dilbar dil se pyaare of caravan is nowhere mumbaiyaa song. It has lovely
persian beats.
Nor were "kitna pyaara vaada" etc.
The film also has "daiyaa ri main kaha.n aa pha.nsi" which Asha
considers the most difficult song ever done by her. It is in her own top
10 list.
"chadhati jawani teri chaal mastaani" indeed was mmbaiyaa.
>
> C.I.D., Mera Gaon Mera Desh (Raj Khosla)
>From second film, "maar diya jaaye" does sound mumbaiyaa. Other "sona
laee ja re" and "kuchh kehta hai ye saawan" don't. "aaya aaya ataria pe
koi chor" and "haae sharmaaoo.n kis kis ko bataaoo.n" are normal
melodious songs. I don't know whether to put them in that category.
