Need biographical information on the comedians of the 1930s and 1940s:
Charlie (Noor Mohammad), Ghory -- both of whom went to pakistan after
partition -- Dixit and Kesari. Thanks.

You should try old issues of magazines like Madhuri, Shama and others.
Very old issues of old magazines should also be available in the Poona
Archives.

I distinctly remember a whole issue on comedians published by Madhuri
(during 1976-1983, my Shillong period). I wish I had saved the issue!
But TOI Bombay should have it.

Some 3/4 years back, there was a similar sort of query to which
I had replied. It was a rather lengthy and rambling account
but it did contain some info about Noor Mohammed Charlie, Ghauri
and Dixit. There was just one subsequent post, a brief note of
thanks. I suppose, my post should be available in the archives.

Kesari I think was a relative newcomer. One of his pictures
I recall was "Kohinoor", where he appears amongst the "applicant"
singers who come to "inspire" romantic thoughts in an otherwise
listless Meena Kumari. When he is summarily rejected, he keeps on
pleading : "saNgat ke saath suniye, Maharaj". Comparatively
speaking, he does not occupy a very high place in the list of
good/popular comedians.
