Song: jalke dil khaak hua, aankhon se roya na gaya
zakhm ye aise jale, phoolon pe soya na gaya

Film: Parichay (1954)
Singer: Lata Mangeshkar
Music: Sailesh
Lyrics: Keshav
*ing: ?

While we are on songs with minimal orchestration...

I have no words to describe this song; it is a spiritual experience to listen to
it. But I'll try. The words, the tune, the voice, the heart-wrenching emotions
lacing every word she breathes, slow and deliberate, are, in every sense of the
word, magical. There is a haunting universe of melancholy wrapped in this
fragile melody that slowly paints itself over the ambience as the words unwind
gently, almost hesitantly in the delicate, precise notes. Emotions cannot
possibly get any more melodious.

And there is virtually no instrumentation throughout this song, just a faint
wafting of violins over soft, subdued cadences, and her voice weaving slowly
across them. The song shares its prelude with K L Saigal's "andhe ki laathi tu
hi hai..." :

dil ke phaphole jal uthe seene ke daag se
is ghar ko aag lag gayii ghar ke chiraag se

It is tragic that Hindi film music saw so little of this remarkable composer
(anyone care to post a filmography? All I know from him are PARICHAY and SAVERA,
each a veritable goldmine of music). The other beauty in PARICHAY is the Lata's
"duet with the tabla" that Satish-ji mentioned recently - "aansuon ki chhaanv
men hans le o dilvaale". Neha had posted both of these songs on Latanjali about
a year ago... check out http://members.rediff.com/latanjali if you are
interested in the lyrics on either, especially "jalke dil..."

ham khatavaar hain ya humko banaanevaala
chaand ke mukhde pe bhi daag hai kaala kaala
kitni barsaaten huin, phir bhi vo dhoya na gaya
jalke dil khaak hua aankhon se roya na gaya...

presenting the lyrics of the great, evergreen, har dil ajeez song. yeah
it is neither a ghazal, nor a nazm, just a song, unless you know of any
other name for this format of poems.

sorry NANI and DEEPAK, the urdu (or is it persian) of several words is
so tough that i dare not give the meaning. in any case, it needs a
thesis to understand, just the meaning of individual words will not
help.

incidently, i heard about this song for the first time in a story by
celebrated writer Mohan Rakesh, that ended with the lines, "na haath rok
saakiya, pilaye ja, pilaye ja, abhi to main jawaan huun". the mood of
the story took me over and i searched for the song and i always found it
the most nostalgiastic for everyone for the times bygone.

anybody? was it ever used, in part or full, in any hindi film? though
there was one movie with this title (80?) music by nonetheless great
naushad. no song of it i remember now.

regards.

Is he the same Sailesh who sings "dekh chaa.Nd kii or" in aag? A very
likeable voice, and a style of rendition typical of the age.

Thanks for discussing a perennial favourite, Hrishi! I
remember picking up this spurious tape in a Maryland
store and playing it the car on the way home. The
first time this song started playing left me spellbound
and the feeling still haunts me.

For those who haven't heard the song, go to

http://www.indianscreen.com/

Click on "Archives of daily songs" and go to the
second link - "Songs presented from June 1,
2000 to July 11, 2000". Go down the list to
PARICHAY. The song title as it appears on the
page is "dil ke fafole, jal ke dil khak hua".

The site contains mp3s for many other songs.

Hrishi,
You know how much I love this song and I have praised it before.
However, since tomorrow is the Great Lady's birthday it doesn't
hurt to do it again:-)
Sailesh comes up with a great melody and the lyrics are awesome too,
but the reason this song is a masterpiece is entirely due to the
singer. Lata has inumerable sad songs in her repertoire, but this one
IMO sets the standard for her sad songs. The incredible singing and
emotions she can convey in even one word like "haay" takes your breath
away.

True. Both you and I have tried, but I don't think we have conveyed the
beauty of this song:-)

Very pretty lyrics. Who is this guy Keshav? Any info.?

Well, thanks much for including this memorable song in this series.
Lata was,is and will remain the greatest singer ever. God bless her,
on her birthday and always, for giving me and others one of the very
few really meaningful pleasures in our lives.

IIRC, Lata was born on 28 Sep, not 27 Sep.

Lata has indeed given "jeene kaa bahaanaa" to so many of us. Even a
book on Classical Music (I don't remember the title of the English
edition of Vamanrao Deshpande's book examining diff gharana_s) by VD
could not resist the temptation to mention her. Even Bhurji Khan sahib,
who died soon after Lata's career began was once seen listening to her
songs. To gush about Lata is not to be sycophantic. That is the only
way of acknowledging our debt to her.
