The movie introduced Waheeda Rehman in a vampish sort of role.Raj Khosla
mentioned in one of his interviews that the script of C.I.D was his and
that C.I.D was independently directed by him but any person who has
some sort of exposure to Guru Dutt's work can see his stamp in the entire
film.It has always been a question in my mind as to why Guru Dutt did not
direct the film himself? It was not that his former assistant needed a
break.Raj Khosla had already made "MILAAP" (his first movie ) for
T.R Fatehchand (producer of "Jaal") and Milaap was moderately
successful. Also Guru Dutt was not the broken man (mentally) that he
became after "Kagaz Ke Phool".As mentioned in an article in Filmfare
he was a man who laughed at life and who eventually took his own life.
Also after "Kagaz Ke Phool" Guru Dutt had become supersitious. He
started believing that if his name featured in the credits as the director
the movie would bomb.So he let M.Sadiq ("Chaudhvin Ka Chaand") and
Abrar Alvi ,his writer and perhaps his best friend take the credit
for "Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam" both of which carry his unmistakable stamp.
Back to C.I.D, Guru Dutt had spotted Waheeda Rehman in the dance number
of a Telugu film which he saw in Hyderabad. He called her to Bombay
and after a screen test okayed her but asked her to change her name
for films which she stoutly refused.C.I.D was meant to be a quickie
and so he did not want to spend much on it.He roped in Dev Anand to
play the hero. But when Dev heared that he WOULD NOT SING ANY SONGS in
the film he was aghast. One of the conditions which Dev put forward
before signing any film was that he would sing at least half a dozen
songs. He pleaded and begged but Raj Khosla said it would look stupid
and unrealastic if a C.I.D inspector sings.Dev argued that the college
public would be disappointed and the movie would flop but Raj would
not relent even though Guru Dutt himself saw that Dev's arguement was
valid. Finally Dev was given a few lines more precisely the mukhda
of "Aankhon hi Aankhon main" and the matter resolved.
In recent years the above mentioned song also got mired in controversy.
If you look at the jacket of the cassette of C.I.D it says music-OPN
lyrics Majrooh. However the above mentioned song was written by
Jan Nissar Akhtar (Javed Akhtar's father).A compere on the morning
show mentioned that Majrooh had written the song and immediately
DD received a letter from Javed refuting the claim and many people
including me came to know of the real poet of this song.
Another incident which i remember appeared in an article by Raj Khosla
in Sushma.Guru and chela were to attend the premiere of C.I.D in
Calcutta but their plans were hampered by floods which were taking
place and so they reached Calcutta around 40 hrs late (they were
travelling by train). It was Saturday noon and the movie had been
released. On the station they were received by the Calcutta distributor
who had come with big boquets etc.Guru Dutt immediately turned to
Raj and said "Raj lagta hai tumhari film hit ho gayi hai warna yeh
marwari phool pe itne paise kharch nahin karta" (i have tried to be
as exact as possible for the quote). They saw the evening show of the film
and had a party after it with Guru Dutt drinking heavily.Next morning
Raj khosla discovered Guru Dutt in the bathtub in full suited-booted
condition! But that was Guru Dutt he says.
Also i would like to mention the song "Jaata kahan hai deewaane "
which was edited out of the film because Guru Dutt felt it did not
match the mood of the scene (where Dev goes to meet waheeda and they
discuss about the parrot). It is a loss for all of us because IMHO
opinion this was one of the best songs Geeta Dutt ever sang.
Mehmood appears in C.I.D in a brief role as the killer early in
the film.He was a struggler then but got the role because he was
Minoo Mumtaz's (the famous dancer) brother. Also years later Raj Khosla
used the same C.I.D sequence in "DOSTANA" when Amitabh is
charged with murder which he did not commit in the first place. The same
death of an accused after interrogation and the inspector being
charged for it.
All said and done i remember my father telling me when i was young
Beta aaj bhi jab C.I.D release hoti hai to housefull hota hai. That
was the seventies. But those days are gone and shall come back no more.
We are left with memories and a video cassette and nothing else.
Everything in this post has been derived from the Filmfare magazine,
and Raj Khosla's memoirs in the hindi magazine Sushma.I have tried
to be as exact as possible but memory does fail sometimes.Any additons
and corrections are welcome.

And Mehmood and Minoo were the children of the dance director Mumtaz Ali.
This was a reason that Mehmood could get those 2 minute roles. Does anybody
remember him as one of the 4 people teasing Nutan in Baarish? His father
can be seen in various movies dancing somewhere in the background. One song
of Sargam (old) with RK and Rehana featured him dancing behind RK in the
song in which Raj interrupts the stage performance. :) Mehmood, maybe
because RajKapoor knew his father, was quite respectful towards RK. They
were to star later in the movie 'Do Ustad' with the song 'Chacha o chacha'
{Rafi-MannaDey}, methinks.

ps. Great article! Thanks.
Hi everybody,
A point which i forgot to mention in my original post
is that till C.I.D the movies began with the credit titles.C.I.D
is probably the first movie in which the movie titles are shown
after the film has already started (the murder is already committed,
before the titles are shown).

Isn't the song 'Leke pehla pehla pyaar' also picturized on Dev Anand?
I have not seen the movie but I am just guessing. I can imagine the song being
picturized on the hero and his friend (Waheeda Rehmaan?) disguising themselves to
rescue the heroine (captured by the villain off course) Is this true for this
movie or is it just the effect of Hindi masala movies on me?
Also I would like to know who sings the song 'Booz meraa kyaa naav re' on the
screen. (I know the singer is Shamshad begum)

Add one more correction to this - the movie for 'Mama o Mama' is
PARVARISH not DO USTAAD
if we are talking of the song -
'mama, o mama, o mama mama mama,
ghar wale khaayen chakkar
aesa hai apna chakkar,
chakkar mein tum nahiin aana, pyaare mama'
So now have we changed this to an entirely diff referance,
than what the original poster meant ?

Well, Dev recruits two singers to help him tease Shakeela. He just walks
and it is the two singers who do the singing.

This was another song from the same movie... 'kaheeN pe nigaheN kaheeN pe
nishaana'.

'Boojh mera kya naav re' was picturised on some village belles who come up
with maTkis at the water hole near where Dev and Shakeela's car has given
way. Minoo Mumtaz was the lead village belle, I think.
{Her and Kum Kum were the regular favorites by Guru. Did Pyaasa have either
of the two? }

Sure. :) Me doesn't remember. As it is, it couldn't have been Do Ustad...
wasn't this the one with Madhubala? ... but the song was 'mama o mama' that
I was referring to.

Actually the song has three singers - Shamshad Begum, Mohd. Rafi & Asha Bhosale
>BTW, isn't it "booz mera kya naam re" ? "naav" does not make any sense.
Even I thought so earlier but after listening to the song carefully, I was
convinced that it is 'Naav'. Actually 'Naav' is the Marathi word for 'Naam'.
I guess they used it to rhyme with 'gaanv' and 'chhaanv' in the song
(boojh meraa kyaa naav re, nadii kinaare gaanv re, peepal jhoome more anganaa,
thandii thandii chhaanv re )

AFAIR, this song is picturised on a set of village girls while Dev
and Shakeela are standing near the car by the highway. At end of the
song Shakeela drives away, leaving Dev behind, I think.
BTW, isn't it "booz mera kya naam re" ? "naav" does not make any sense.
