RMIM ke Khawateen-o-haazrat,
Pesh hai...the fourth ghazal from Begum Akhtar's Golden "HMV" Collection.
The shayar is, again, Shakeel Badayuni; Begum Akhtar must like him a lot!
I'll post the music composer's name later although I think that Khayyam
composed the music for most the of ghazals in the first two cassettes.
Mere hamnafas, mere hamnava, mujhe dost banke dawa na de
Main hooN dard-e-ishq se jaanbalab, mujhe zindagi ki dua na de
jaanbalab = death, dead
mukhtasar = brief
Mera hazm itna bulund hai ke paraye sholoN ka dar nahiN
Mujhe khouf aatish-e-gul se hai, yeh kahiN chaman ko jala na de
hazm = flight (That's what I hear; does anybody hear otherwise?)
sholoN = balls of fire; aatish = fire
Woh uthe haiN leke hom-o-subu, are O Shakeel kahaN hai tu
Tera jaam lene ko bazm meiN koi aur haath badha na de
hom = burnt offering; subu = wine cup
Enjoy,
Irfan.

I have heard several renditions of this ghazal, but the best in my opinion are
by Begum Akhtar, and Farida Kahnum. I believe Begum sahiba's is probably the
best one.

From what I recall off the B Akhtar version, the first line had 'dagha'
and not 'dawa'. And the first line of 3rd stanza had 'junoon' and not 'hazm'.
Pradeep
and the way she sings "Daaaaaaagh-e-dillllllll" makes you really
believe in her.... it's wonderful...
In fact you should try to listen to her 'Ghazalpaikar' album... it's
phenomenal!
aaj jAne ki zidd na karO.....
Farida Khanum's style really suits this particular song, which lyrics wise is
pretty plain......
I have a couple more albums by Farida Khanum, and they fade in comparison to this one.
If you do like Farida Khanum's style of singings, try Iqbal Bano, especially her
album that was recored live at a Lahore Auditorium. This album of her is exclusively dedicated to poetry by Faiz Ahmed Faiz. A masterpiece.....
(I think the name is Iqbal Bano sings Faiz, its on the BMG label)
As for Pardeep's question about the discrepancy with some of the words:
You are right, the first word is dagha
But to the best of my knowledge the second word is hazm...

Umang.
