The Nagari Unicode version appeared garbled due to a wrong setting
while posting. I am posting it again below. Hope it appears right this
time.

What does one do wih this? My newsreader is ASCII only. I
imported it into Word. Tried Unicode, Unicode (Big-Indian),
Unicode (UTF-7) and Unicode (UTF-8). They all produce
gibberish. Nagari isn't one of the options.

yeah, it appeared perfectly ok this time.
how come that the other song appeared pretty well first time
itself?

It is really nice to see the lyrics in devangari script.
Thanks for the efforts you are putting in this.
I am modifiying a free domain program available on net in
which you can first write in unicode devangari and at the
press of one key (OK, some selection of conversion tables)
it will give the output in iTRANS.
Wish me luck. or...
Hope you and other members will find some use of such a
tool. It works offline. needs java 1.4 runtime for
execution. No installation. Just unzip to a folder. It is a
part of a multilingual editor.
It has been tested giving major part correctly, but there
are some bugs remaining, like ending "a" sound after each
consonant and its suppression by halant. maybe more bugs.
If you know java, could you help me in modifying that part
of the code?
could be a 10 minute work for you. I never learned
programming after foxpro.
Ketan has reasons to wonder why so many threads get diverted
to iTRANS.

Why is it ascii, when latest unicode compatible browsers are
available for free from many sources?
that was vinay's line two years ago. Today I fully agree
with it.
Thanks to jai hanuman ji, a tiny download of free takhti 0.2
is available. You can use that for composing and directly
sending mails though outlook is needed there.

apart from unicode compatible browser and software, you need
to have a unicode compatible hindi font installed. I am
enclosing a font file mangal.ttf. INstall that and try
reading it again.
newsgroup post will discard the attachment but you will get
it in the cc to you.
Don't tell microsoft that I had sent you this font. It is
not allowed to distribute it.

There lies the problem. Your newsreader loses all Unicode character
information before showing you the message, irreversibly.

Since the text that you are importing is now ASCII-only, importing it
into any Unicode text editor/viewer is not going to give you the
original text. As for the various options, UTF-8 is the one you would
need for Hindi or any Indic character set. <Jargon warning>
UTF-8/UTF-16 etc. are encoding schemes while Unicode is simply a
specification; a large character table that assigns each character an
integer number<JW end>.
Now since you would not change your newsreader, you will have to do
with the ASCII parts of the post only; just ignore the rest. However,
out of some "bodhi-GYaan", if you decide to make the change, you will
have to do this:
1. First check if you can see Hindi text in http://www.bbchindi.com/
(or close to home http://www.panchamonline.com/gaane/hindi.asp)
properly? If not, then visit http://devanaagarii.net/ and follow
instructions according to your OS. If yes, then move to the next step.
2. Use a news client that has Unicode-support. Outlook Express,
Mozilla and Opera, the three that are bundled with their browser
suites support UTF-8. Some other popular and free ones for WinX are:
http://www.40tude.com/dialog/
http://www.wilsonc.demon.co.uk/d7xananews.htm
An updated version of your "favorite" newsreader WinVn also seems to
be available at http://my.execpc.com/~mspankus/. Please check if this
one supports (at least) viewing of UTF-8 encoded messages. I don't
know if it does.
For *nix, Pan reader (http://pan.rebelbase.com/) seems to do the job.
It has even got "Good Net-Keeping Seal of Approval" to boot.
There must be some for other platforms too.
Of course, there will be some trade-offs in changing your newsreader.
It's for you to decide whether the big hassle of downloading a free
software, installing it and then may be configuring it and all that is
even worth seeing a post or two (at the moment at least) in Nagari or
not.
