Most hindo film songs are in kaharwa or dadra taal.
Very few are in anything else. I know of two songs
in roopak tal (7 matras).
1) O basanti pawan pagal (Lata, jis desh mein ganges bahti hai)
2) Yeh hawa yeh raat yeh chandani, teri ik ada pe nissar hai
(Talat, Sangdil)
do people know of any other roopak tall songs ?
(By the way there is a rafi ong, which is in its tune very
similar to song to above, it goes "tujhe kya bataaon main
dilruba, tere samney mera yeh haal hai ...". I was wondering
whether both the songs are in the same raga ...).
SURINDER
Yes! there have been plenty of songs with rupak taal and even some other taals
which are rare in Hindi films... Below is a list of those which we can
remember. Rupak is a 7-beat rhythm; another similar one is Deepchandi which is
a 14-beat rhythm. Where "we" can distinguish, we'll mark the Deepchandi below...
"Songs in Rupak Taal" "Movie"
1. Tere mere Milan ki ye raina Abhiman
2. Teri bindiya re Abhiman
3. Apni to har aah ek toofan hain Kaala Bazaar
4. Chupke Chupke raat din aansoo bahaana Nikaah (actually, a Ghazal by
Ghulaam Ali)
5. Ajee rooth kar ab, kahan jaiyega.. Aarzoo
(Deepchandi taal)
6. Chupke chupke chal ri purvaiya.. Chupke Chupke
7. Husn pahadon ka, o sahiba... Ram Teri Ganga Maili
8. Kaise jiyunga mein, agar too na mili.. Sahiba
Note the identical tunes, "meter", etc. for song nos. 7 and 8!!!
9. Aap ki nazaron ne samjha, pyar ke kabil.. Anapadh
10. Aye dile-nadan... Razia Sultan
11. Piya tose naina lage re.. Guide
12. Aaj Socha, to aansoon bhar aayen Hanste Zhakhm
13. Badi sooni sooni hain zindagi ye zindagi Mili
14. Aye mere pyare watan Kabuliwaala
These are the only ones we can recall right now, and any additions to this
list are more than welcome. Maybe someday we'll look for songs in other rare
taals, e.g., Jhaptaal, 10-beats (there is a semi-classical oldie on this with
Rafi, probably a duet w/ Lata, but it isn't coming to mind now...).
Have fun...
Hemlata and Vinay.
