I watched roja last night. The music was interesting as was the
dance choreography for Rukumani (which my three year old made me watch
4 times ). Two questions-

1. Anyone have the lyrics for this song?

2 Who was the dance director for this movie?

The cinematography was very good. The hero was very good looking.
But I had greater expectations of the story and the script. It was
quite an ordinary movie in those respects. I somehow thought that
since Mani Ratnam was such a great director he would make the movie
less masala and more real. I could not imagine rolling in the snow with
a saree with not even a sweater on. Pneumonia , here I come.
Nor could I imagine the Indian security guard letting this woman wherever
she wanted to go. Why did this film win so much acclaim. (the music is
ofcourse very interesting)

You would do well to keep 3-year olds away from such songs :-)
The lyrics, when you know them (sorry, I don't have the entire song),
are pretty lewd at times, saved, I've heard, only by some
harmless picturization and Mani Ratnam's name.

The Dance director is Prabhu Deva, the skinny guy with a stubble who danced for
the song in the movie.

Actually, the lead dancer in the Roja sequence is Prabhu Deva's brother
(or so I recall from Kumudam - which is a weekly Tamil mag, for the
benefit of those unfamiliar). PD, of course, was in the Chikku bukku
chikku bukku rayile seq. from "Gentleman." I saw it on video and
naturally was left wondering what the big deal about the song was.

BTW, I haven't quite figured why "Gentleman" was given this title
(Not that I've given it too much thought).

Agreed the dance director is Prabhu, but he is not the one who danced for that song. It is infact his brother who danced in that song.
Prabu is the one who danced in Gentleman. Incidentally, his brother also danced in this song from GM.

Yup, the music is interesting...

Anyways, Here r the lyrics(hindi) that I remember....Hopefully I know the wholw otherwise I'll post it tomorrow after my test :))

Rukmani Rukmani shaadi ke baad kya kya hua
kon haara kon jeeta
khidki mai se dekho zaraa
hooooooo ooo hooooo
Baahon mai hain baahen daale
meethi baaten hone lagi
Khatiya bhi dheere dheere khat khat hone lagi
aage peeche hua
to chat pat hone lagi
hoooo ooooo hooooo.....

hooooooooooo oo hooooooooooooo....

Oongli se chua hoga kaanp gayi gori tab
Kaam de dun (???) mast hoke naach mai lage the tab
Ang ang khil gaya bijli kadak gayi
bindiya chamak gayi chudiyan khanak gayi
mile do badan to ye javani khil gayi
zameen aasman se har khushi tab mil gayi
Hoooooo hooooooooooooo.......

Rukmani rukmani.....

* Oh yeah, don't ask why I remember this....hehehehe!!!

I think this movie is highly overated and so is it's music. I have been following almost all the articles written in the appreciation of music and about this movie. I agree that it has good choreography and cinematography but....
Other thing I am reluctant to say is about A.R. Rahman. I afraid I flame a war on this. But, I just want to express my opinion. I have heard that A.R.Rahman uses computer technology to compose his music. In my opinion, if one uses computer to develop music, he should not portrayed as telented as it was implied in one of the article. I think one needs to have good logic and good taste and you may be able to come up with good piece of music. Music given A.R. Rahman does not impress me at all. I think hi

s music may be little diffrent from contemporary style. Besides, lyrics are ordinary.

Actually, the skinny guy (SG) with the stubble, is Prabhu Deva's
brother. Prabhu Deva and SG danced in Gentleman for the song,
Chiku Buku Raile ....

could you please elaborate this? what more did u expect in the story?
I thought it was a good mixture of reality and filmi. MR (maniratnam)
as a businessman had to get the money back, otherwise it would end up as
a film division presentation! The story was good and different. It
showed the frustration of govt, army, militants and common janta.
If this balance had not been maintained, i guess it would have failed
either at box-office or at censor-board!

There are thousands of such movies which portrayed "reality without masala"
and got branded as a "art movie". It will be shown only in TV, probably
ten years hence, at the eve of some summit at night 11.30 ;-)

your opinion. Many ARR songs are based on classical music, with improvisation
using computers (or whatever instruments). If it isnt pleasing, people
won't listen. Maybe, your taste doesnt match with his.

What has ARR got to do with lyrics?
