Hmm, 65 singers sang for someone who was accused of not utilizing many
singers. Yes, the list does include several singers who have sung only a
couple of songs for Naushad. But there are many singers who have sung more
than Uma Devi, who sang about 5-7 songs in 2-3 films. Naushad, if you recall,
was acknowledged for using Uma Devi.
It was also alleged that Naushad used Mukesh in Andaaz in order to further his
own career and then dumped him. He then returned to Mukesh in Saathi when his
career was on the downswing. Now, it is common knowledge that Naushad made a
name for himself with Ratan (1944). Between Ratan and Andaaz (1949), were the
following films: Sanyaasi, Queemat, Anmol Ghadi, Shahjehan, Natak, Ailaan,
Dard, Anokhi Ada, Mela (with Mukesh) and Dulaari. Atleast three of the above
films which didn't feature Mukesh, viz. Anmol Ghadi, Shahjehan and Dulari were
BIG hits which indicates that the maestro had already established himself
before the advent of Andaaz, although the success of this Mehboob film did
boost his career further. On the other hand, Mukesh was still establishing
himself as a singer and the success of Andaaz helped him a LOT. It is
ridiculous to say that Naushad used Mukesh only when he had problems with his
own career.

Just a few additions of the top of my head from Guddi:

I must take the responsibility for that allegation. Well, first I must thank
Sami and Chetan for such an informative article. I knew at least 40-50 singers
from the list to have sung under him. Also I would like to request you to
check if singer #56 should be S. Balbir. Thanks. One more request. Which films
of Naushad have Geeta Roy, Husna Bano songs ? Also #34 Vrijmala should be
(AFIK), Brijmala who sung in Pahele Aap. I will appreciate info. on Nirmaladevi-
Naushad connection and Hamida Bano-Naushad too.
>54. Sushma Shresta, 55. Bhupendra, 56. S.Malbir, 57. Khan Mastana,

Well, now coming to the allegation itself; I must say I don't recall what
exactly I wrote, but do know what I was trying to ask about him ? My question
is 'Has he given chance to any new/newer singers other than Umadevi ?'. And
second how many of those 65 singers he used have given good songs ? Although
this last may not prove much, but just to know.

OK. those 3 were big HITS. One was in 1945, second in 1946 and third was in
1949. So, after Nurjahan went to Pakistan, Sehgal passed away, he tried with
Shamshad and Mukesh. He gave 4 solos to this 'then-trying-to-establish' singer
called Mukesh in Anokhi Ada. And it worked. In fact it had to since it was by
Naushad... and all those solos became a run away success just because they were
composed by Naushad. Hence he continued with them and came Mela and Andaaz.
Fine... Now if I look at Naushad's record, I find that he has never used any
singer who was **not** established but for one; Umadevi. I obviously won't give
any list anymore to tell #x number of songs sung by Mukesh before Anokhi Ada
(1948, But may have been recored in late 1947) were popular. But, will say that
he was the top choice for music directors then, if not first. (May be first was
G. M. Durrani). I won't quote for Mukesh; but will give example for Shamshad and
Lata; who later became his first love. I don't know how many of you know about
a film of 1947 (may be eralier in 1945) called 'Ajeet Aur Rangin Zamana';
but that one had some exquisite songs by this queen of that time. Also same 1947
had 'Chhin Le Azaadi' and some very good songs by her. Lata's story is very well
known; and that who was her mentor during 1947-1949; the year that brought her
to limelight. In 1948 Ma. Ghulam Haider gave her Majboor, in 1949 Padmini. OTOH,
Anil Biswas supported her with Anokha Pyar(1947) preceded by Gajare in 1948;
Premnath gave her Heer Ranza (1948), Khemchand Prakash came with Ziddi (1948);
and Hansraj Behal Chunariya (1948); Vasant Kedar gave her Hamari Kahani. I
suspect, if Barsaat preceded Andaaz or Dulaari ? All these happened before
Naushad actually touched them in real sense. In fact the singer whom he adored
the most,Rafi; became his regular only after he had had films like Sawan Aya Re,
Rumal, Actress, Raat Ki Raani, Safar, Nai Taalim, Biwi etc. etc.
Your list mention Paarul Ghosh's name. Yes she sung for him for Namaste (1945).
But by then she was a great singer of her own. So were the cases of G M Durrani
(I know only one film - Namaste where he sung), Johara, Raj Kumari, Khan
Mastana, Surendra and others.
This is the reason I find him sailing along the waves created by others. (Espe-
cially till 1950).
>ridiculous to say that Naushad used Mukesh only when he had problems with his
>own career.
I had mentioned that this is my feeling and not my belief. And I won't like to
fight on that, since I have no base to do so. It might be a fact; but I won't
make any statement on that.
