Shayar is Momin Khan Momin, arguably the best shayar after Mir

Thanks a lot for all the GHazals, Irfan. Keep them coming.
For some of the difficult Shers, perhaps you can add some of your
interpreteations to start a good discussion.
In one of your posts, you have wondered about the net-pickers :-)
So here is some net-picking :-)

I prefer not to argue here, but agree. Momin can very well be ranked
next to Mir and GHalib. In fact as far as the subtelty factor goes,
he scores well above GHalib !! I will not be so confident, if he is
to be compared to the great Mir on that aspect. But undoubtedly Momin
took the Urdu Shayari to great heights, just by being so subtle.
In this GHazal, he doesn't disply so much of subtelty, but the simplicity
is amazing. The Shers so effortlessly touch your heart. Much in the same
way as "chupke chupke" by Hasrat Mohani. The fluidity, th rhythm is also
worth noticing.

Respected admirers of Urdu shaiyeree:
I hope you are still savouring the taste of Mirza
Ghalib's shero shaiyeree. Todays post is of Shaiyer Momin Khan Momin
(1801 - 1852). Momin writes in a plain, straightforward manner without
much allusion to mysticism or spirituality. His poetry is a frank and
faithful record of his emotional experiences.
Momin sought "Islaah" from the poets Nasikh and Mir.
Mir seems to have influenced him the most and he has written many ghazals
in the metres and manners of Mir. But Momin is not an imitator of
Mir, he has a fresh conversational and natural style. Besides writing
ghazals, Mir also wrote "Masnavis" -- autoboigraphical narrative poems,
describing in some detail the poet's romantic attachments, and "Marsias"-
elegies, mourning the deaths of his mistresses. Momin had an excellant
command of Urdu, Persian and Arabic. His command of the languages and
the subletly of expression inspired this often quoted couplet:
Tum mere paas hote ho goya
Jab koi doosra nahin hota.
I feel as if you are with me,
When company I have none.
On a personal note, I would probably not be able
to post ghazals for the next two weeks as I am moving to Philadelphia.

what he says is for my good, though 'tis harshly put.

How sweet to me your damning words! let me hear,
Bless ye: your expletives once again.
The rigours of fate alone couldn't have wrought my ruin,
A hundred other calamities preyed upon my heart.
Go there, I cannot, without going I Pine,
What I do ? I do not know, I am in a fix anyway.
Despotic beauties have drained my life away,

This is the first time I am reading (*any* of) the posts in the "BAGH"
series, and I think Irfan is doing a great job. The only thing is,
Irfan, I think you should more word meanings, and also provide some
analysis of the GHazal at the end of each post. That way we could
have *interactive* BAGH, for it would prompt some discussion.
=> Shayar is Momin Khan Momin, arguably the best shayar after Mir

Momin, as far as I know belongs to the group of GHaalib's
contemporaries: Momin, Zauq, Daagh, Ghalib ... Mir was, IMO (and I
think Abhay will agree with me) quite a class apart! IMO, a good
ordering of these shaa'irs would be:
Ghalib, Momin > Zauq > Daagh
Off tangent, there's a story about how the "visaal-e-yaar" Ghazal was
composed by *all* these shaa'irs in a mushaairaa ... Ghalib said "yeh
na thi hamaari qismat ke wisaal-e-yaar hotaa" and Daagh said "ajab
apnaa haal hotaa jo wisaal-e-yaar hotaa". Zauq is also said to have
written a GHazal at the mushaairaa? I sort of remember some scene
like this in the Mirza Ghalib of Talat Mehmood/Suraiya (music by
GHulam Mohd.).
A related question. Was this Daagh the same as Daagh Dehlvi, who
wrote "dil ko kyaa ho gayaa KHudaa jaane, kyoN hai aisaa udaas, kyaa
jaane" and "daaGH aaNkheN nikaalte haiN woh, un ko de do nikaal kar
aaNkheN"?
Back to the GHazal in the BAGH, and it's rather interesting that Irfan
should have posted this GHazal, because this is one of the GHazals in
the RARE GEMS: Jagjit and Chitra Singh Album (released by HMV). I
have mentioned this Album on RMIM earlier. It's an absolute must for
all GHazal fans to possess this album. It sort of presents the
"missing link" between the classical GHazal gayaki of Begum Akhtar,
Mehdi Hasan et al, and the modern pop GHazal of Jagjit Singh. I think
I'll post something like the "Jharokhaa" that Irfan posted about Begum
Akhtar, on the J&C Rare Gems album. Incidentally, the album contains
GHazals sung by J&C between 1966 and 1975, and consists predominantly
of Jigar Moradabadi (maximum number), Ghalib, Mir, Momin, Amir Minai,
Sudarshan Faakir, Daagh Dehlvi and others.
This particular GHazal is sung by Chitra. Just one hearing of the
rendition by Chitra will suffice, I am sure, to show how GHazal fell
from the pedestal at which Begum Akhtar placed it to the current
depths where Pankaj Udhas and Chandan Das are caressing it at.

I think the Jharokhaa idea is a very good one, especially when
dealing with albums that are not familiar to everyone.

You're right. I myself had written down 'raah' but when posting
the ghazal, I decided at the last minute, for some forgotten reason,
that raahat made more sense.
I wish I could resist these last-minute urges.
