Media is often accused of sensationalising 'news' and 'stories',
parading the emotions and feelings of the subjects under focus and
sometimes robbing them of their very dignity and privacy. Even as
critics fret and fume, readers and viewers lap up the fare presented
in the press and electronic media.
Be that as it may, this is a story of a media report of the difficult
times that the 'Living Legend' and singer Mubarak Begum is passing
thorough in the evening of her life which appears to have caught the
attention of a 20 odd year old youngster from Kolkata and evoked a
positive response.

A 'fan' of Mohd Rafi, Samarjit Acharji probably knew little about this
singer of yesteryears or her songs but her story touched his heart and
'moved' him into action. He soon collected a handsome amount (I
'heard' it was Rs 35,000) to help her out. Being in regular touch,
Samarjit now enjoys a close personal rapport with her - not very
different from that of an affectionate elderly lady (with some of her
early film songs dating back to late 1940s, she should be well over 70
years old now) and her indulgent grandchild.
Mubarak Begum's oft repeated desire to visit Hyderabad (could it be
that she hopes to see an improvement in the condition of her daughter
suffering from Parkinson's disease by offering prayers and seeking the
blessings of Saint Yousuf Shareef Baba at the Nampally Durgah)
prompted Samarjit to plan and pay for a visit to the city by flight
accompanied by her daughter-in-law.
Initially, felicitation of Mubarak Begum was planned at a small
musical gathering with singing of 'old' songs by the 'AbadRafi'
members in the city due to the short notice of her visit. The scale
and character of the event soon underwent a metamorphosis with Prof
Ramachandra Reddy, former Head of the Dept of Psychology and Dean of
Social Science, Osmania University offering to make available the 300
seater auditorium of AV College of which he is the Hon. Secretary
now.
Mr Reddy and his musically oriented family went a step further to play
host to the visiting singer at their residence and extending warm
courtesies, even presenting her with a handsome cash purse ! . Their
friends and faculty of AV College too chipped in with their cash
contribitions. The local 'fans' of Mohd. Rafi were also not found
lagging in this spontaneous effort.
Word of mouth and an insertion in the city engagements diary in a
couple of newspapers later, a modest but discerning crowd gathered to
meet, felicitate and listen to Mubarak Begum. The programme was a
great success with her rendering of more than half a dozen of her
trademark songs to a cheering crowd.
'Kabhi Tanahaiyon Mein Yun Hamari Yaad Aayegi...' composed by Snehal
Bhatkar based on Kedar Sharma's lyrics for Hamari Yaad Aayegi,1961
once again brought back the pleasure of listening to the haunting and
melodious hit song which has become synonymous with her name.
However, the flavour of the evening was the popular song 'Mujh Ko
Aapne Gale Laga Lo, Ae Mere Humrahi...' the Shankar-Jaikishan number,
penned by Hasrat Jaipuri for Humrahi,1963 which she sang more than
once on public demand and in a specially nostalgic mood.
'Gale Laga Lo' she did at the programme with her the leading lady of
'Humrahi'. Mrs Jamuna, noted Telugu film actress and her husband Prof
Ramana Rao were visibly happy and enthusiastic participants in the
programme. She became a celebrity with her performance in 'Hamrahi',
thanks in no small measure to Mubarak Begum's playback singing of the
hit song 'Mujh Ko Aapne Gale Laga Lo Ae Mere Humrahi...' picturised on
her.
Jamuna warmly felicitated Mubarak Begum in public and presented her
with a handsome cash purse and privately expressed her keen intent to
actively support a planned and more ambitious programme at Hyderabad
to help raise funds for her on a much larger scale.
Mubarak Begum had earlier in the day made a surprise call at Jamuna's
residence on coming to know that they lived in the lane next to that
of Prof Ramachandra Reddy where she was staying.
It was thus that Samarjit showed the way and a number of older music
enthusiasts followed suit in according the respect and support due to
a singer of the stature of Mubarak Begum in the evening of her life.
She went back to Mumbai in a happy state "what more can an artiste ask
for..." she said in an interview she gave to Deccan Chronicle
newspaper and ETV Urdu Channel.

Nareshji thanks for your comments. It is good to see more and more
music lovers interact on these subjects. With good wishes from all
friends like you, we could see through the programme in a memorable
manner and we fondly hope that Mubarak Begum Sahiba herself relished
her stay here in Hyderabad. Thanks once again.
