Hi RMIMers:

In case you did not know, a downloadable pdf copy of the above book is
available in the digital collection of the Columbia University
Library:

http://www.columbia.edu/cu/lweb/digital/collections/cul/texts/ldpd_6299825_000/index.html

The book is in Urdu. The library is worth exploring, it has many other
books out of print related to India, e.g. Alberuni's India.

Quiz:

Name three Hindi films based on this story.

Mehndi (1958), Muzaffar Ali's Unrao Jaan & JP Dutta's Umrao Jaan. I
read somewhere that Zindagi Aur Toofan (1975) was also very loosely
based on this.

Mendi(1958) was Directed by S.M.Yousuf.
Jayashree played the role of Umrao Jan.
It was Zindagi Ya Toofan(1958).
Directed by Nakhshab but ghost Director was Shantaram.
Nutan acted as Umrao Jan.

I have the DVD of Zindagi Ya Toofan, have not had time to watch it
yet. So there are 4 versions.

Quiz:

Are there other literary books with 4 or more versions? I think
Devdas will qualify (I liked Dev D better than Madhuri Dixit wali).

Dear Sir, from where could you get the DVD of this movie (Zindagi AUr Toofan) ? It is not traceable anywhere, if you could give me the address, it would be helpful. In fact I am ready for outright purchase too, these are some of the rare ones (the non successful movies) of Nutanji. I have most of the available movies of her, except the not successful movies of this zone. The Youtube version is very poor and with discontinuities.
Thanks,

ZINDAGI YA TOOFAN (1958)

Nutan, Pradeep Kumar, Yakub and Minoo Mumtaz

The films seems to be a joint effort of Nakhshab (the poet)
and Nashad (the MD) and most pobably was a flop.

Both Ns migrated to Pakistan (probably just around this time)
and might have taken few prints and song recordings with them

EMI Pakistan had issued an LP of this film (78 rpm source) [
it did not havr Talat's number: Zulfon ki ... Mat Poochh Ki Dil Par]

I have about 4 or 5 songs on my 'Good Songs List, including 2
versions of Title Song, a mujra and the Talat's song

A very low quality and mutilated frame 'Full Movie' is available on YouTube. I downloaded it, but did not like it, probably because of bad print
and audio quality

MM Video of Karachi, did release a VCD

Request to Prof. Toofaanii TeerAandaaz. Since this film
is not available in India and MM Video is untraceable,
may I request the busy-Professor to try to convert the
DVD file of this film to (a) MP4 format or better (b)
HQ-DIVX format (AVI extn - can be played on home DVD playes)
and upload it on 'You Know What Tube' or his own web site

Thanks

Note: The Double Ns prior production: NAGMA, is probably
a 'LOST PRINT' case. Yeh khabar hamen 'Badi Mushqil Se'
milli.

Surjit Singh ji, Namaste,

I have been very interested in the Story of Umrao Jaan Ada for quite some time. I felt that the story must be based on some real events in the 1890's.

So I did some research on-line and posted my result on ALUP. Here is what I had posted:

Dosto,

I am fascinated by the Mogul period, and specially the literature of
that period. MY inability to read Urdu has been a big handicap, but I
still search for English translations of Urdu literature of the
period. In this endeavor I came across the story of Umrao Jaan Adaa.
I loved the first movie, its Ghazals and of course the view of Lucknow
and the surroundings during those times. After some research I am
quite convinced that the the story does have some factual basis. I
even managed to find a picture of a "Umrao Jaan Ada" from a British
library book. So if in any one is interested, I can E mail it.

A review of the novel in English by C M Naim is fascinating. you can
read at the following URL.

http://www.urdustudies.com/pdf/15/15ReviewNaim.pdf.

Another Blog states that novel Umrao Jaan Ada was based on the life
of Mahlaqa Bai Chanda.

http://kamalp.blogspot.com/2010/12/mahlaqa-bai-chanda.html

I hope you enjoy these articles, as much as I did.

PJ

I'm interested your DVD of the movie based on this story. If you can send me a copy of the DVD, I can convert it into a MPEG2 file and place it on line for all to share.

I wonder if there is Roman script or a Hindi script of the story.
