Yes, I am refering to THE Rafi. Every body was/is aware of His Master Voice
including himself. His combo with great MD's like Naushad, mMohan, SDB, S-J
Hemant etc. has produced brightest stars which will shine the sky of music for
generations to come. He has created wonders even with not so great MD's.
What I wonder is- was it MD creation or whether it was Rafi's own fine touches
here and there which made the song great, considering the fact that Rafi had
learned classical music and must be aware of the kind freedom it provides to the
artist to bring out his/her talent, and the fact that his song under his own
direction (does anybody recall ? I heared but can't recall) is not all that
great. Another fact is that the kind of liberty he takes with other MD's is
not there with Naushad. Seems as if Naushad used his voice to the exhaustive
limit ("DuniyA ke rakhawAle.." for height and for AlAp and "Man tadapat.." for
AlAp). I would like to hear comments from NettGuruji's on this matter.
Here are the songs which I like most and the reasons
1. Meri muhabbat jawaN rahegi, sadA rahi heiN sadA rahegi (jAnwar)
^^^^^^ ^^^ ^^^^^^^^
Na tumasA koi jamAne bhar meiN ho....
^^^^ ^^^^

different)
5. MeiN pyAr ka diwAnA, sabase mujhe ulafat heiN (Aee milan ki belA)
^^^^
6. mAn merA ehasAn are nAdAn ki meine tujhase kiyA heiN pyare (An)
apanA na banA looN tujhako agar ek roj to merA nAm nahiN
^^^^
7. Madhuban meiN rAdhikA nAche re, giradhar ki muraliya bAje re (kohinoor)
^^ ^^^^^^^^
(well the rest of the song has many great variasions)
8. JiyA ho, jiyA ho jiyA kuchh bol do, are ho, dil ka paradA khol do.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ ^^^^ ^^^ ^^^^^^^^^^^^^
(jab pyAr kisi se hotA heiN)
10. Dur bahut mat jAeeye leke karAr hamArA, aesA na ho koi lut le rah meiN pyar. ^^^^^^^ ^^^^^^^^ ^^^ ^^^^^^^^

(rAt ke andhere meiN)
12. Ajkal meiN dhal gaya din huA tamAm, tu bhi so jhA so gaee, rang bhari shAm
^^^^^ ^^^^ *** ^^^ ** ^^^^^
(beti bete)
13. Ek haseeN shAm ko dil merA kho gaya
^^^^ ^^^^ ^^^^^^

^^^ ^^^^^^^^^
14. dil kahe ruk re ruk ja, yahiN pe kahi, jo bAt is jagah heiN kahiN par nahiN

15. meiN tuti hui ek naeyAN huN mujhe chAhe jidhar le jAo
^^^^^ ^^^ ^^^^^ ^^^^
chAhe to dubo do maujhoN meiN yA sAhil tak le jAo (Adami)
^^^^ ^^^^^^^
I know the list is pretty big, if not endless. Therefore I will restrict
myself here, but wud certainly like to hear from others.
have fun

I think usually it was a combination of the MD's tune and Rafi Sahab's fine
rendition which made those songs immortal. MD's not only compose the tune, but
also direct the singer how to pronounce different words and where to lay
emphasis. A tune can sound good even if the rendition is bad (some of the new
songs are examples of this case). On the other side, a great singer can make
even an ordinary tune sound good, and I think this is where Rafi Sahab
contributed most. He made quite a few ordinary compositions sound good based
merely on his singing skills. I would group many Shammi Kapoor songs under
this category. But, it's very difficult to quantify the individual
contributions of the singer and MD.
>great. Another fact is that the kind of liberty he takes with other MD's is
>not there with Naushad.
Perhaps the fact that Naushad's tunes were often based on classical ragas
might explain this .....

OK, I'll take these examples and comment on whose contribution *I* feel is
more important. 3 categories: Rafi, MD, Combo. (Lyrics not considered). I've
deleted the ones I cud not recall.

It's difficult to really compare the two contributions. But, I did have fun
grading them :-)
Sami Mohammed (A Naushad fan)....expressing his opinions regarding a

Here it goes (Ruk ja !!)
dil kahe ruk ja re ruk ja, yahiN pe kahiN
jo baat(2) is jagah, heiN kahiN pe nahiN
(1) parbat upar khiRaki khole, jhanke sundar bhor,
chale pawan suhani
nadiyoN ke ye raag rasile, jharanoN ka ye shor
bahe jhar jhar pani
mad bharaa mad bharaa samaaN, ban dhula-dhula
har kali sukh pali yahaN, ras ghula-ghula
to dil kahe ruk ja he ruk ja...
(2) unche-unche peR ghanere, chhanati jinse dhoop
khaRe baanh pansaare
neelee neelee jheel meiN jhallake neel gagan ka roop
bahe rang ke dhare
daali-daali chidiyoN ki sadaa, sur milaa-milaa
champaee champaee fijaN, din khilaa-kihlaa
to dil kahe ruk ja re ruk...
(3) pariyoN ke ye jamaghat, jinake phooloN jaise gaal
sab shokh hatili
iname heiN wo alhaR jisaki hirani jaisi chaal
baRi chhail-chhabili
manchali-manchali adaa, chhab jawaN jawaN
har ghaRi chadh rahaa nashaa, sudh rahi kahaN
to kahe ruk ja re ruk ja...
Wonderful lyrics all the indeed. Hope it is correct.
Have fun
