Gali gali mein phoola bichhaoo
Khoob machaoo shor ab ke piya
Jo ghar aaye
Mein nachoo bana ke moar.
Mohe ayi na jaga se lag
Mein itna zhor se naachi aaj
Ke ghugharoo tuta gaye
Kuchh mujh pe naya joban bhi tha
Kuch pyara ka pagal pana bhi tha
Hara palaka meri teera bani
Aur zulf meri zanjeera bani
Liya dila sajana ha jeet
Woh chhede payaliya ne geet
Ke ghungharroo tuta gaye
Woh kaise lagan batton mein thi
Woh kisaki mahek ratton mein thi
Sandesa jo layi purawayi
Mein to khudse bhi sharamayi
Joba ghar aye the shyam
Liya tha mujhko aisa tham
Ke ghungharoo tuta gaye
Dharti pe na mere pera lage
Bina piya mujhe saba ghaira lage
Mujhe aanga mile aramana ke
Mujhe pankh mile parawana ke
Jaba mila piya ka gaaon
To aisa lachaka mera paon
Ke ghunngharoo tuta gaye
Mujhe aaye na jaga se laj
Mein itna zhor se naachi aaj
Ke ghugharoo tuta gaye
This song has become associated more or less entirely with its singer,
Pankaj Udhaas. Many may not be aware that it is penned by Qatiil
Shafaii.

The MD is Hridayanath Mangeshkar, the singer Lata M. I wonder which
came first: HM's tune or Udhas's.
Warm regards,
Abhay
In article <90ktue$p41$1...@nnrp1.deja.com>,
I have a video recording of a BBC concert from the late 70's-early 80's which
shows a very young looking Rais Khan singing this song. IIRC, all the versions
by the ghazalists--Pankaj Udhas, Jagjit Singh, Anup Jalota, et al, came after I
had already heard this by Rais Khan. IMHO, the tune that he has given to this
song, is by far the best I have heard.

I remember first hearing this song in a movie called Dharam Kaanta,
starring a host of stars. I think Raaj Kumar was in it, plus others. I
don't remember which year this was, perhaps in the late 70s/early 80s.
The song, IIRC was sung by Runa Laila in the film. The tune was
identical to the one used by Pankaj Udhas. I don't know who was first
but I suppose it was popualrised by Pankaj Udhas

Runa Laila sung the same song in her album
'The loves of Runa Laila'.
The tune is almost similar for both the songs.
Runa Laila's version is better than the movie version.
( Ofcouser IMHO:))

Actually, I have four copies of this song. The fastest tempo is a Chutney (
fusion of Indian and Calypso, popular in the Caribbean) version by Kanchan. It
is also very high pitched perhaps near a third octave Dha. The other copies are
all by Pankaj but the version used for the lyric here is the slowest. It is
from a cassette, Music India's, the very best of PU vol. 4. It includes the
alap. Musica india also produced two CD's the very best of PU, Urdu Ghazals and
The best of PU collection, Ishq vol 4. Both of these are pretty much the same
as the cassette but the Ishq cd has special Ghungroo dance effects. IMHO, the
best version is from the cassette, some seven minutes long and played to a live
audience. Incidentally, i heard that the first and original recording is by a
Pakistani lady, but i don't have any names.

in naushad's dharamkanta also (1985?) this song was sung asha.
i wonder whether they all used original lyrics by qateel or they
improvised.

I don't know who sang it in the film, because I never saw it. But this song I
first heard from Runa Laila on DD TV in the days of the Emergency, circa 1975.
According to those who had heard it before from her, she had rendered it on DD
earlier also (probably after 1971). The version I remember hearing had the
same tune, and was later included in her LP/CD. Pankaj Udhas may have reaped
in the most benefit when he became popular in the early mid 80's with the mass
affordability of record and (especially) cassette palyers in the 80's, as
compared to the mid 70's.
Happy listenings.

The MD of Dharam Kaanta was Naushad?? Or are we talking about some
other film by the same name?
It was Naushad - a horrible effort by both the MD and the singer.
I did not think it was possible to be worse than Anup Jalota, but
Asha achieves that:-)

I am attempting a translation which is true in spirit even if not
necessarily accurate in word-by-word meanings.

I would strew flowers in the streets, chortle in delight

a bit of love's obsessions
my every look was sharp as an arrow
my locks binding chains
my anklets stirred such a song
I won my love's heart

my feet scarce stay on ground
I am unawares of all but my love

I grow wings like birds

my feet were so restless
that my anklets came undone ...

yes madam,
the md is our very own great naushad saab, one and the same. lyrics by
majrooh. i wonder whether qateel or majrooh has been credited with
lyrics.
i guess, the film had one other song that comes to mind:
"ye gotedaar leha.nga nikloo jo daal ke,
chhuriyaa.n chal jaaye.n meri matwali chaal pe".
not great, but more near to naushad style.
there was one friendship song also, between rajkums and (was it)
jitendra. was reena roy there?
there were many songs, but a film preferably forgettable by naushad
fans.

Pankaj Udhas / Chhithi Aayi Hai + 6 super Hits / Music India
/ Tape # 4271 - 018. The un-resolved issues are:
1 The song is about 6:07 minutes long. The Title lines, para # 1
and Para # 3 were sung by Asha. Pankaj Udhas sang only Para # 2.
That is over 75% of the song is in the voice of Asha. So, how
am I going to catalog it as Pankaj Udhas solo or as a major
contributor ?
2 The song what I have, does not have (a) the Opening Lines: Gali
Gali Mein Phool Bichhao + (b) Para # 2 (in the voice of Pankaj
Udhas) is different. The wordings are:
Woh Phool Kajaon Mein Mahke
Bin Piye Hi Gori Hum Bahke
While the 2nd para given in this forum is: Woh Kaisi Lagan Baaton Mein
Thi
3. The lyricst is listed on the tape is: Mumtaz Rasheed (not Qateel
Shifai)
4 No film title is given, but in one of the Quiz (conducted
by Mr. Ashok - Titled: Less Known MDs or so), the film name was
mentioned as: Ek Hi Maqsad (1988) with Divya Rana being on-screen.
Another friend told me that the film name is: Aadha Ram Aadha Ravan (
released: around 1984)
5 It seems there are zillion and one versions of this song. I won't be
surprised to find a version, 'Pankaj Udhas Live At Kake-Da-Dhabha at
Pind Harphool (that is village Harphool).
Ms Nita, where are you ? Please help. Thanks.

pankaj udhas has one of his most popular and good ghazal by mumtaz
raashid that is "dard ki baarish sahi madhdham, jara aahista chal".
if it is included in the tape, may be some mix up lyricists' names.
