Film: Roop Ki Rani Choron ka Raja (B/W)
*ing: Dev, Waheeda, Jeevan, Iftekar, Rajendra Nath, Sunder, Manorama
Singers: Lata, Talat, Mahendra kapoor!!, Subir Sen
Lyrics: Shailendra, Hasrat Jaipuri
MD: Shanky-J
Year:
Jeevan tells Dev of a diamond being chaD.haa-oed at Shibpur's Shiv mandir.
There is this boat leaving Howrah to Shibpur - the pilgrimage place. All
are going to pray at Shiv mandir, a big businessman going to chaD.aa-o a diamond,
No tickets, last two tickets with Jeevan, but Dev doesn't want to share with him. Jeevan
is "langaD. deen" a one leg guy. He takes a "gooNgaa pahalawaan" with him to take care of
fighting. Dev manages to get in by chori.
Manorama, a "koThewaali" is going on the boat to "chaD.haa-o" Waheeda - her newest
"kaccchee kalee" at the mandir as a bohanee. Sunder is a nawaab going to give up drinking,
so has 3 crates of "foren" daaroo to give at the mandir :-)) (s
lurp!!)
Dev at the port/jetty
1. suno bhai hamane paalee (or peelee?) hai thoD.ee (Talat for Dev)
then there is the tune of "teree pyaaree-pyaaree soorat ko" -- so this movie is made AFER
sasuraal ?
BTW, I note such thingswhenever I watch a movie. e.g. Paying Guest should give half the
royalt to Ghalib!!! (see PDfilm [02] )
2. jaa-o naa sataa-o rasiyaa
tum sang jaagee saaree rain (Asha for Waheedaa practising ? or am I forgetting?)
3. aajaa re, aajaa, aajaa re, nain pukaare (Lata, chorus for Waheeda, practising mujaraa)
=================== Excerpts from PRsPD [14] ===================
I saw the movie for one song 'tum to dil ke tar chhed kar' (PLEASE,
DON'T post this song on rmim, I WANT TO post it in the evening). This
is one of those most intoxicating romantic songs I know of that a guy
can sing to a girl, until I heard cute, young Waheeda singing the same
when she was bit by the bicchuwa of paapi prem-wa-ka-rog.
And that was mind-blowing as well.
A pilgrim ship/boat is going to Shivsagar. Dev wants to steal
the diamond being offered to god by a 'seTh', Waheeda is taken by
Manorama (koThewali) to dance at the temple (as a 'shubhaarambha'
for the future baazaar ki dhaD.akan). And on the ship Dev enchants
Waheeda. So in the Dev version of this song, she is on the
upper deck, he is on lower deck, singing this song. And
Waheeda, the 'anaagat-yauwanaa' naayikaa (innocent) is just
idlly strolling, in an 'andaaz' that makes the meaning of 'dil
D.hoonDhataa hai phir wahi fursat ke raat din' very clear! The
height of 'velaa-ness' if I may say so :-)
4. tum to dil ke taar chheD. kar, ho gaye, bekhabar (Talat for Dev)
chaaNd ke tale jaleNge ham, ai sanam, raat bhar
tum ko neeNd aayegee, tum to so hee jaa-o-ge x2
kisakaa le liyaa hai dil, ye bhee bhool jaa-o-ge
ye to kah do ek baar, khwaab meN to aa-o-ge x2
apanee ek aur raat, ulajhanoN meN jaayegee x2
shokh-shokh wo adaa, ham ko yaad aayegee
mast-mast har nazar, dard ban ke chhayegee x2
aaj sabr kaa bhee haath, hamase chhooTane lagaa x2
ab to baat-baat par, dil bhee rooThane lagaa
kyaa gazab hai har koi, hamako looTane lagaa x2
=================== End Excerpt from PRsPD [14] ================
Then when the boat is stranded for repair, Dev and Waheeda get caught by Bengali folks
who have this festival on which day the woman has to marry if a guy asks her. So, Dev
tells Waheeda that unless she acts as HIS wife, some moToo who has been ogling at her will
ask her.
Then this Bengali mukhaD.aa song
5. tomaar aamaar premer jwor uthol-paathaal Shivaa jaane naa (Lata and chorus)
This song also reminds of a shot from Solva Saal, where a VERY similar scene is there
where Dev is persuading line-maaro-ing Waheeda!
When the bichchhu of prem kaaTo-es Waheeda, she sings the same song:
6. tum to dil ke taar chheD. kar (Lata for Waheeda)
And finally (from PRsPD [14] )
What drove me crazy was this duet, towards the end of the movie, on the
beach of Shivsagar (somewhere in Bengal, as per the story line) which I
had not heard before! And when I told my then-fiancee, she said it was
a stupid movie (she was refering to the new one!) only when I sent her
the cassette of the song, did she confess of being proud to make her
decision (about me :-) ) ... Kahin main jyada to nahiN bol gaya ?
=================== Excerpts from PRsPD [15] ===================
Note : VERY good beats/tempo. Wonderful picturization as well.
worth the whole movie itself. (I saw it again yesterday)
Much better to listen.

Pintu ki deewanagi raNg laayi! Mirza Ghalib kaa she'r quote karte hue
aaj kal GHalatiyaaN ki jaati haiN! ;-) ;-)
=> There is a mention of Ghalib's sher:
=> kitane sheereeN haiN lab tere e raqeeb
=> gaaliyaaN khaa ke bhee bemazaa na huaa
This should read:
kitne sheereeN haiN tere lab ke raqeeb
gaaliyaaN khaa ke be_mazaa na huaa
=> This guy has been used and miused a lot!! At least when the generation
=> who understood Urdu :-))
Well, misuse is quite evident in this case!
