'Sur Sangam' had

*ing : Girish Karnad
Music: Laxmikant-Pyaarelal

The classical numbers were sung by Rajan-Sajan Mishra, quite
accomplished classical vocalists. The Telugu film was released
sometime in the mid-eighties (1986?), the Hindi remake shortly
thereafter (about a year later, I think).

Don't recall the story much, but the film is certainly not
mythological. It is very much a contemporary social drama.

I am also crossposting this to RAMLI where you may find more
info, hopefully...

Ciao,

MD: Laxmikant Pyarelal

Singers: Rajan Mishra, Sajan Mishra, Kavita Krishnamurthy, S. Janaki, Lata
Mangeshkar

The Telugu version came out in 1980-81 time frame. The Hindi version I believe
was out in 1985-86.

It is not a mythological film. It is about a singer who loses his standing
in society and in the music world because of his acceptance of a dancing
girl's daughter under his wings as a student. The man is driven to abject
poverty because he is shut out of the music scene and his fellow musicians
too ostracize him. As a result the dancer is unable to get proper tutelage
too. She makes it her goal to have her son (an illegitimate child born out
of forced prostitution) become this singer's (now in his twilight years)
disciple. What she couldn't get (classical music trainign from the Maestro)
she wants her son to have. The movie ends in a melodranatic fashion with the
son singing and the Maestro dying on stage with the knowledge that he is
her son (unknown to him until that moment).

Avoid the Hindi version - Laxmi-Pyare's music is jarring and gaudy. The Telugu
version is much better.

Hi,

The story is about an Ustaad ( Girish Karnad ) who faces financial
difficulties as people turn to western music. A devdaasi (Jayaprada)
helps him financially as well as in making Shastriya Sangeet popular
again. Sadhana Singh and Sachin also appear as a young couple.
