Hi:
Since we are on the topic of plagiarism these days, I would like to add
my two cents worth. I can remember at least two movies that have been
cogged from oldies. 'angoor' from 'do duni char' originally from
Shakespeare's 'Comedy of Errors' and 'Dil hai ke manta nahin' from
'Chori Chori'.
In addition to the oldies being pretty good movies, the recent versions
were also very entertaining. Thus the question arises: 'Is it OK to
cog if the new work is as entertaining as the old one?' It is also
granted that a large fraction of us would not have been entertained by
these stories if it were not for the new version of the oldies. Or can
this be considered cogging at all, since most pieces of art if left in
public domain for a long enough time (20 or so yrs) become public
property (you know what I mean).

Can any of you think of any other old Hindi movies that have been
reproduced?

Regards

Udit

One movie that comes to mind is 'Pyaar ke Naam Qurban', a 1989
film that starred Mithun C. and Dimple Kapadia. It was a 'modernized' version
of the classic, 'Aan' the first Indian movie that was in colour.

'Chori Chori' was cogged from an english movie too.I think it was "Seven days and seven
nights" starring Clark Gable(of 'Gone with the Wind" fame)

Dear Udit :
Chori Chori was based on the Capra Classic - It happenned one Night
Starring Clark Gable and Paulette Goddard. It was also remade (ok Copied)
in Tamil as Chandrodhayam *ing MGR and Jayalalitha.

There are many other old movies that have based their stories on
Eng movies, I'll post a detailed list when I find time.

These two movies were just dubbed in hindi(and telugu etc.) so this can
not be classified as plagiarism. And "Phushpak Vimanam" was a anyway(s)
a silent movie, and was released with just the change in titles(i.e.
the name of the movie and some credits were put in hindi instead of
Kannada(I think it was originally in Kannada, but I am not sure).

Well, it has some Hindi words _spoken_ in it!

Though the characters don't speak in the movie, there is background
music [and human voices as well (not of characters)]. So it's not a
"silent" movie in a strict sense.

In one of the early scenes, you can hear something from radio (some
bhajan, some news etc). The bhajan and news pieces depend on whether
you are watching the Hindi version or the Telugu version or ...

Also, in the middle, when Kamalahasan goes out with Amala, they go
to a theater. There is a scene in the movie where the hero of the
movie (presumably) says something like "mother, I'll take revenge on
them for ..." blah blah blah. Those exact sentences again depend on
which language version you are watching.

Other than these 2 things, I don't think there's any difference (in
audio as well as in video) in all the language versions (excepting,
of course, the titles!). But, they decided to have the Kannada
version "Pushpaka Vimana" as the the "original". However, I don't
think this can be listed under "plagiorism".

Following up on myself :), there are at least two hindi movies
that are copies of "Come September," starring Gina Lolobriginida

Dil hai ke manta nahin a copy of Chori Chori ? I did'nt know that! I recently
say a Clark Gable movie on TNT: It Happened One Night. I realized that Dil hai
ke....... is a exact copy (to the last detail) of Gable's movie. It even has
the same dialogues and also the scene in which Aamir Khan teaches Dixit how to
get a ride on the highway. Well, if Dil.....=It happened...... and
Dil.....=Chori Chori, then Chori Chori must've been a copy of It Happened one
night.

The movie having Om prakash and Ashok Kumar was called, "Kalidasa".was
based on the same lines as come september(yes it had rock Hudson).

a couple of more copied movies along with some others posted before.

19)Jalwa Beverly Hills Cop
20)Masoom Man Woman and Child
21)Tarzan(kimi's debut) Tazan the ape man
22) Teri bahom meim(Ayesha dutt) blue lagoon
23)jungle ki beti daughter of the jungle

two movies had most of their songs taken from two previously released
independent albums.
one was Don II had all the songs from "Hawa Hawa" by hasan jahaangir
the other was a raj kiran and divya rana starrer, having all the songs from
a Pankaj udhas album (including chandi jaisaa rang, ghoonghru toot gaye)

as for pushpak, DAYA PUBLIC. I STAND CORRECTED. IT WAS not A PLAGIARISED MOVIE.

Hi Friends,

Off late we have been witnessing lot of articles which merely repeat the
information which has already been provided by some other netter. It gets
very annoying to read such articles. I understand that we get very enthu-
siastic to reply once we see some query which we can answer, but before
doing we "F" we can just see all the articles on the subject and confirm
that we are not duplicating the information. Yes you can second somebody's
point if he/she is not sure or if you are in disagreement, there is nothing
wrong in that as the network is for information exchange. But we should avoid
posting the same information without any addition/modification.

This will save our time as well as the bandwidth. Now the question will be
how can we do that. Though I am not very knowledged about this but I can tell
you one way to do that. If you are using "rn" to read the news, you can press
"=" to see the subject of all the articles. Then you can go thru all the
articles on the same subject by typing those particular article numbers eg :

3330 Re : XYZ
Suppose you are at article #3330 (on subject XYZ), and you want to follow it
up. Pick up a pen and paper and press "=", you will get an output like -

3331 Re : Plagiarism
3332 Re : Plagiarism
3333 Re : XYZ
3334 Re : Plagiarism
3335 Re : XYZ

Now if you want to read all the articles on XYZ (before following up or other-
wise), you can type "3333" instead of "n" at the end of the article. Once you
are done till the end of the list i.e. 3335, then you can retype 3330(article
that you wanted to follow up), which will take you back to 3330, and NOW you
can press "F" to provide us with your contribution which very valuable to all
of us, becuase success of the news group depends on our articles and their
quality.

I hope some other friend can provide us with some other way to avoid duplicate
information(and specially for some other programs like "tin"etc.). This
very be very helpful for some the friends who are not wizards at using these
packages.

Take it easy, and nobody should take it personally I also used to make the
same mistakes in the begining (and sometimes I do that even now, specially
when I feel lazy to go through this or when I am near the end of the newsgroup).
And yes if you post such an article by mistake you can go and and cancel your
article by using "c" command, for more info. type "h" in "rn".

Hope this helps,

- Surender Mohan.

P.S. : Was slightly disgusted at re-re-repitition of the same information on
some subjects like
Plagiarism, Amitabh Movies etc.
But I can understand this is because many of us do not know of all these
ettiquettes(sp?).

hi there,

just a followup on mohan's article on duplication of same info. it would be much easier if
the reader is using the "tin" command to read news. Here all the replies to an article are
automatically grouped together and the reader just has to press the space bar to scroll
through all the articles. So you dont have to hunt for articles with the same subject header.
Of course if someone posts on the same subject with a new subject header, then it wont be
grouped with the rest.
hope this helps.

To tell you the truth half the movies now coming out are copies
of the great Dilip Kumar's Gunga Jumna. The plot of these movies
is that one brother is in the police while the other is a good
guy yet circumstances make him a thief, dacoit, smuggler, etc.
Copies of Gunga Jumna include Amitabh's Deewaar. I know the
truth hurts but we should all accept it.

You don't really have to be a wizard :-) Here's what `nn' users
can do. When you see an article that you want to followup to,
press `l', which stands for "Leave", rather than the `f' for
"Followup". This will simply take you to the next article to be
read. At the end, when you've read all articles that were
selected, `nn' will ask you "Show left over articles again?".
Press `y' and it will redisplay those articles. By now, you've
seen all the followups to that article you `left', so you can
judge whether your have anything to add or not, and
accordingly, decide whether or not to post a followup.

>And yes if you post such an article by mistake you can go and and cancel your

Or the `C' command in `nn' ... For more info, type `?' in `nn' :-)

I think Andar Bahaar was relased way before 48 hrs. Andar Bahaar
was released in '85 or something.

I had this distinct misfortune of seeing this film. It is a remake of "Lace",
not "Steel Magnolias". I flinched so many times while seeing this film at the
bad direction, the miserable acting (it was amazing how Hema Malini managed to
get the worst out of all the actors/actresses) that after a while, I had to just
laugh at the film and not try to evaluate it at all. I normally do not go on a
tirade against a film, but this was particularly bad. They tried to Indianize
the original storyline and landed up just making it stupid. God it feels good to
get that off of my chest in public :-) :-) but the bad was bad enough to merit it
IMHO of course. Anybody else feel similarly ???

I'm pretty sure that 'Andar Bahaar' was a copy of 48 Hrs. 48 Hrs was
released in 1984, whereas 48 Hrs was released in 1982. The plots for both
movies are quite similar.

I'd have to agree with you. The movie was not very good, and deserved to
flop (as it did.) Poor direction, and poor editing. The thing that irked me the
most was the ending! When Mithun came to rescue everyone at the end, why didn't
Dimple introduce him as Divya Bharti's father? Strange.

About Jaag Utha Insaan (remake in Hindi) & Saptapadi (Telugu-original), the endings of the two differ though both were made by K.Viswanath. Saptapadi ends with the heroine reuniting with her lover with the full consent of her elders (mainly her grandfather who is a revered priest in the village)& her husband to whom she is briefly married & refuses to accept her against her will. However, in the Hindi remake (I've only seen parts), the heroine & her lover die despite attempts to reunite them.
Now why this changed ending-was it to avoid any doubts reg plagiarism? And why? Aren't the makers of both films the same person/s?
