Questions re Shashi Kapoor

I am a fan of Shashi Kapoor but I know him only by his performances in
"Western" movies -- The Householder, Shakespeare Wallah, Bombay Talkie,
Heat and Dust, The Deceivers, Sammy and Rosie Get Laid.

What is his reputation in Indian cinema? Is he (or was he) considered a
sex symbol?
(His appearance has, after all, changed dramatically over the years!) Has
he ever done any of those Hindi musicals that are shown on Friday and
Sunday nights here in America? Is he related to Raj Kapoor? For that
matter, are all the Kapoors related? I believe he (Shashi Kapoor) was
married to the English actress Jennifer Kendall and she has (sadly) died.
True? Or not? Children? Remarriage?

I understand Ismail Merchant's new movie, In Custody, has been shown in
India. What was the reaction? Is there much of an audience for "arty"
movies in India (as opposed to those dime-a-dozen musicals)? I have the
soundtrack on CD and I'm goofy about it -- I play it almost daily, often
more than once.

If anyone would care to take a moment to answer any of these impertinant
questions, I would be grateful. Any info -- even tidbits -- would be very

Being a male, I don't consider myself 'qualified' to judge that!!??

It seems like this is a trend in the Kapoor family.

Prithviraj Kapoor (the father) also expanded from the middle in his late years!
Same goes for Raj Kapoor and Shammi Kapoor.

Yeah! Of course! You would find very few (if any) main role Indian actors
or actresses who haven't participated in the Hindi musicals. It's like a
ritual in Hindi movies!!

Shashi is related to Raj. Prithviraj is the father of Shashi, Raj and
Shammi. Not all Kapoors are related. Anil Kapoor (today's star) and
Shakti Kapoor (today's villain) have nothing to do with each other or with
the 'Kapoor dynasty'.

Yeah, he married Jennifer Kendall. She infact acted in a Hindi movie
called 'Zanoon' or 'Jhanoon'. Great movie about the 1857 revolution.
She acted as a wife of a British general.

Anyway, in real life, Shashi and Jen. had a son, Karan Kapoor.
He tried Hindi movies as his role in 'Loha'.
What a flop! Sorry Karan.

Shasi Kapoor and Jennifer Kendall had three children, you have mentioned
Karan Kapoor who though not successful as an actor is a very successful
model. The other son is Kunal Kapoor who was also starred in a movie
as Shashi Kapoor's son in their home production ( I don't remember the
name of the movie). Their sister also acted in a few films, she had one
with Naseeruddin Shah ( I neither remember her name nor the name of the
movie). She did not feature as a heroine in any of their home productions.

I think my memory has somehthing to do with the fact that I am doing a Ph.D.
because there is only a limited amount of facts/knowledge that one can
keep in his/her brain. So as new knowledge/facts are input somethings would
be lost. The chances are those things with which we are cuurently not in
touch would be forgotten hence my inability to remember the names. This
is also the reason why I do not post frequently on this group, but I am
an avid reader.

KARAN is not the only son.
shashi kapoor has 3 children
kunal kapoor(acted in two films i have seen;vijeta and ahista ahista)
karan kapoor(very handsome...but doesnt act..so models:))
sanjana kapoor(acted in one film;hero hiralal..) now i think she is into
theatre.

the original poster had mentioned that Anil Kapoor's and
Shashi Kapoor's families aren't related. I don't think that's
true. Anil Kapoor (and his brothers/sisters) and Rishi Kapoor (and his
brother/sisters) are known to be first (or at least second) cousins.

No, her father's name is Randhir Kapoor, who is son of Raj Kapoor. Raj
Kapoor was Shashi Kapoor brother.
