Friends:

Recently I heard the beautiful old Marathi song (Koli geet) Mi Dolkara
- Vallore Nakwa - by Lata Ji and Hemant Kumar on the radio. I could
hear it from Musicindia also. Then the lyrics of first 2 stanzas from
Shatatarakaa.

It is a haunting melody. I don't know much Marathi. Can some Marathi
friend please translate the meaning of this song. I will be very
grateful.

The song is from the album Geet Shilp by Lata Ji, music by Hridayanath
Mangeshkar.

Thank you very much.

This koli geet is a very popular song, reflecting the folk/traditional koli
music. Even I was enchanted by this melodious number. I asked one of my
friends what it means and she explained a little to me.

Mee Dolkara= I'm the dolkara. Dol is what the small boat of the fisherman is
known in the koli dialect. Kar here means his job here to row the boat.

Dolkar Daryacha Raja= Darya means the saagar or the sea. Raja is the king so
here he means I'm the king of the sea.

Vhallav re nakhwa ho vhallav re rama= Vhallav, I think is to row the boat.
Nakhwa means the owner of the boat. In Bombay city the fishermen are
basically from the Koli tribe. Its basic lannguage is Marathi but the
dialect is Koli. Nakhwa is also the surname of some Koli people. One will
also hear the surname Tandel. It means the captain of the trawlers. So a
Nakhwa owns the boat/trawler but the Tandel runs it.

Rama is like what we hear in some Hindi songs. Oh rama ho, ham to chale
pardes, or like rama rama gajab hui gawa re.

I heard this song a longtime ago. If you post the lyrics maybe with the help
of my friend I can translate the lyrics or meaning.

Hope this helps.

Please note this is just an effort in which we may not get the desired
result. But trying our best. Alright, if something is wrongly translated,
please do not blame me. You or others can point out the wrongly translated
words and I will convey it to my friend.

Ghar panyavari= my abode is on the water. The sea being the second home to a
koli.

Bandravar karto ye ja= I make frequent trips to and from the port. Bandar is
a port. Like VT area in Bombay was earlier known as Bori Bunder.

Now Lata sings

Aai Baapachi larachi lek mee laari= I am the darling of my parents. One must
understand that the Kolis and related community Agri they speak Da as in Ra.
Like a Vada paav will be Vara paav. Its like how Chopda is Chopra in
English.

Choli pivali ga, nesli anjari saari(Saadi)= Choli is yellowish and wearing
Anjari sari. I think Anjari is a type of saree like Banarasi, Kanjivaram.

Majhya kesan go, maliyela fulela chapha.= She conveys that she is wearing a
gajra of Chapha flowers. We don't know English for chapha.

Vaas parmalta vaaryan ghetay jhoka= The fragrance (of Chapha)spreads as the
breeze blows like a swing.

Nath or Nuth naakan saajiravani= I am adorned with the nosering(typically
marathi women adorn it)

Gala bharun soniyache mani= and the necklace of golden pearls.

Kolivaryachi mi ga rani= I am the queen of koliwada. Note the ra here in
kolivaRa.

Raat punvela, naachun karte mauja= I dance on the full moon night having
fun.

Yaa go daryacha darara motha=Yaa go is more like 'hey'. The sea has a great
authority.

Kava panyavari ut than dogar laata= when the sea has huge mountain waves

Kava udanvaara sharila yetay faru= My friend is lost in translating this.
Udanvaara is the highwinds and faru is Phaadu, again ra for a da.

Kava panyatuni aabhala bhartiya taaru= When from the sea, the waves reach
the sky

Vaat bagun jhurte pariti = The endless wait is making her dull. Pariti?
sorry we are not aware of it meaning.

Mag daryala yete bharti= And then the sea swells with high tide.

Jaate panyane bhijun dharti= The earth gets wet with the water

Yete bhetaya tasach bhartar majha= likewise I come to meet my beloved. (some
doubts here if this is what it really means)

Now Hemant Kumar

Bhalya sakal la aabhal jhuktay he khali= At the dawn the sky kisses the
earth as it comes down

Sona chamchamtay daryala chadte lali= The gold(sun) shines as the sea
becomes magenta coloured.

Aami panyamandi raapan takto jali= We throw our nets into the sea

Dhan daryacha lootun bharto dali= We loot the wealth of the sea filling the
tokri.

Raat punvechi chandana pyali= The poonam or full moon night has drunk the
moonlight

Kashi chaandichi maasoli jhaali=Even the fish appears silver like.

Majhya jaalyat houn aali= It(the fish) came into my net on its own.

Neto baajaraa bharun mhavra taaza= I carry the fresh fish to the market.

Hope this helps. Any marathi contributors on RMIM are welcome to point any
mistakes.

Now I realise how hard translators work.

Arty Ji:

Thanks a million to you and your friend for the wonderful translation
of the Marathi song Vallore Nakwa. Your line by line - rather word by
word -translation with detailed interpretation is very elaborate and
excellent! I wonder how you managed all this and that too within a few
hours in fact. I appreciate very much your sincere effort. Now I
understand and enjoy the song all the more. I can feel a lot of what
the poet and the singers are conveying through this haunting melody. I
can visualize the beautiful fisherwoman dancing in the moonlight on
the seashore with her beloved dolkara. It really touches the heart.
Is it not what music is all about! Your write-up is so wonderful. With
all your knowledge on Koli geet, It will be enlightening to music
lovers if you can write on Marathi Koli songs etc..

I apologize for putting you thru so much of effort. But, it is worth
every bit. I cannot thank you enough. Indeed, very sweet of you.
By the way, if you want to know the meaning of a Tamil or Malayalam
song, I'll be very glad to provide it!

Regards.

Surya ji,

I am .... what to say....flattered?? by your profuse thanking. You are most
welcome. This forum here of RMIM is very nice because the experts share
their views and knowledge on various topics related to the Hindi film
industry. I pity myself for my limited knowledge about such issues but read
as much as I can what others contribute and discuss.

This song is very popular in Maharashtra but you must understand that
Maharashtra is very different as in the deccan, Vidarbha, the Konkan and the
most cosmopolitan Mumbai. The people from Konkan can easily connect to this
song because the Koli community spans from Northwestern Mumbai right down to
some Goan shores.
I was really pleasantly surprised to know the Hemant Kumar, a Bengali,
rendered this song without any mistakes as my friend says. I will surely
convey your thanks to her because it was her effort. I only typed. I am sure
if there are any other Marathi speaking RMIMers, they might be able to see
any errors. But since nobody posted any comment I take it that the
translation ws upto the mark.

Ok now as far as Tamil songs go, I heard some catchy tunes song. One, I
think is very old, probably from the 70's and the song is

Vorombo, vorombo rukamani vandivarella

And the other is Madhura veera taane.

I dont want the whole translation, just a line or two would suffice.

I would appreciate if you post a link to listen Vorombo vorombo song.

Regards,
Arty

Arty Ji:

Yes. At last I found the Oram Po Rukamani song, you mentioned as
Vorombo!

You can hear the song itself in www.musicindiaonline.com as follows.
Click on Regional, Tamil on the left margin. music listing , Movie
names , Ponnu OOrukku Puthisu (name of the movie - means Ponnu is new
to the town) , Click. You will see the songs in the movie. The first
one is ORAM PO. A chorus by Ilayaraja etc.

Here is the first stanza and meaning. I'll be very happy to translate
the rest, if you want.

Oram po Rukmani vandi varuthu, Vangada vandanam pannungada, Vandu
intha vandiye thallungada, palayam pannapara chinna thayi petha magan
eriya varanda ( Oram po)

Meaning: Go to the side of the road, Rugmani (I think , the name of
the vehicle here! ) vehicle is coming. Get out of the way. Come here,
all of you. Salute this vehicle. Chinna thayi's son Pichamuthu is
coming etc....

Chorus , some dialogue. Then a man tells the kids, tell everyone to
get out of the way. he tells an old lady that there are lots of ups
and downs in the road etc.

A fun chorus song in the Tamil village style. Oram means side of the
road.

Ilayaraja is famous music director who has created many popular songs
in Tamil.

Regards.

Surya

- In the list, little lower , another song Unakena thane. Is that the
second song you mentioned?

Missed a line in the beginning..

Vangada vandanam pannungada, Vandu
intha vandiye thallungada, means: Come on all of you. Salute this
vehicle. Come and push this vehicle..

It is a fun song with a good beat for dance in the Tamil nadu street
koothu style. . The language is in the style of laborers, or villagers
style. I'll give you the meaning of the first stanza. And gist of the
rest. If you need more, I'll write later. No problem.

He is Madurai Veeran (hero from Madurai. There was a legendary hero
Madurai veeran - ) Don't tease him just like that. Now whistle will
be flying. Look, he is coming ,walking like a lion! My dear one.
Whoever teased him, will not be able to take it. Just only beating and
kicks. Thilla tangu (for the beats...). Send him to kuthur.

Stanza 2. He is like a tiger. If anybody gets brave and comes near him,
he will rip you to pieces and blow you away like a cotton candy!

3. He is coming twisting and raging like a storm or tornado. People
around him are alll scared. tangu tangu etc...beats.

4. He is coming fast, jumping like a raging Jallikkattu bull (the
decorated, fighter bull in villages). He is going to uproot you all
like a palm tree and throw you far away!

Regards.

Hello Surya,

I convey my thanks to you, although belatedly because it took me lot of time
to understand the lyrics and the song. I appreciate your efforts in
translating. Btw, I think the singer of Madurai veeran dhaane is some
teenaged guy of about 16-18? Somehow the song reminds me of Master Raju in
Woh Saat Din. In it there's a scene when Anil Kapoor asks Master Raju to
keep a watch on the bathroom because it cannot be locked from inside. He
agrees and in a few seconds disappear listening to some musical procession
on the street. I think, probably that's the dance "koothu" style? Is it?

Regards,
Arty.
