Qamar Jalalabadi passed away last week.

The first film for which he wrote lyrics was Zamindar (1942).
It was the start of a long innings. He was born in 1919; his
real name was Om Prakash Bhansali. He had been bed-ridden
for some time. Last month, word had come that his health had
deteriorated further.

I understand some radio station in US had recorded Hamraaz's
tribute to him. It was due to be aired yesterday (Sunday). We
have lost yet another link to the Golden Era of Hindi film music.

Correction - Qamar Sahab died on 09 January 2003.

http://www.mid-day.com/entertainment/music/2003/january/41214.htm

The write-up at the URL is a shameless copy of Vijay's
write-up for the ISB. The Mid Day Correspondent has
not bothered to add anything of his own. He hasn't even
taken efforts to make some minor modifications to leave
room for argument that his wasn't a blatant copy. The
lyricist's work in the 1940s has been lightly passed over.
That he was one of the few remaining links to the 1940s
has been entirely ignored. But at least Mid Day's link comes
up via Google's 'News' search. Where are Times of India,
Indian Express, Hindu? To be fair to the Mid Day writer,
it is somewhat difficult to slip in the credits part. And the writer
did bother to access the ISB, thank God! Imagine
yourself to be a know-nothing fellow with access to Vijay's
write-up. How will you go about the task? Still, the effort
was Vijay's and its copy rankles. We can be sure no private
'thank you' note has been sent using ISB's feedback form.

The news item announcing the lyricist's death carries
a bizarre title : 'Qamar Jalalabadi ke geet'. Sigh!

At least that title has not been stolen from the ISB.
Its original source is left to the reader's imagination, I guess.
What a sad state of affairs!

Can we possibly have a list of Singers/MDs/Lyricists only
with their original/adopted names. Thanks.

No. That's my next Denver quiz!

Just kidding. I will post the Lyricist one from home tonight. Save the
others for the quiz. BTW jalaalaabaadii is not bhansali, but bha.NDaarii.

At least two real names on this list are slightly different from the ones
listed on the C-ISB pages - Majrooh as Asrar Hussain Khan; and Kaifi Azmi as
Akhtar Hussain Rizvi. If you confirm my matchings above and confirm the real
names, I will correct the bios appropriately.

Very close to Qamar Jalalabadi's real name - Om Prakash Bhansali, but Qamar
is missing in the first list above.

Given Nasima Ajmeri & Saba Afghani, one would be pardoned for thinking
there should be two women's names in the "Real" names list. Iftesla is
probably one. None of the others catch the eye... So, is someone masquerading
as a woman? Why?

Here are the (few) answers I know for sure and one guess.
Updating BOTH lists for completeness' sake (double-entry
system, zindaabaad! :D)

BTW, one notable omission I found from the list is Gulzar
(Sampooran Singh) -- yes, Rafi has sung songs written by
him, hasn't he? "jab bhii ye dil udaas hotaa hai" comes
to mind. Shakeel Badayuni and Jaan Nisar 'Akhtar' are
also not listed here, but the former didn't really adopt
a pseudonym, and the latter's is almost never quoted sans
his real name.

Also, I am pretty sure Nida Fazli is "muqtidaa hasan", but
this name is missing from your Real Names list. This means
we have one entry in each list without a corresponding name
in the other. I will be interesting to find out who.

Question: Wasn't Majrooh's real name "asaraal (ul) hasan Khaan" (v/s
asaraar ahamad)

Which brings me to the question I wanted to (but forgot to)

is, when will you post the final answer list, Dr. Singh?

One more answer, two more guesses (just to keep this thread from
becoming too dormant).

a. [9] irshaad = [c] muhammad afzal
b. [19] paNDit madhur = [l] b. r. TaNDan (guess)
c. [3] anjum jayapurii = [x] ram muurtii (guess)

Combining the responses from Vijay, Vinayak and uVr :), I think
we are past the half-way mark.

In a related context:

Q. Is this 'Ram Murti' the same as Ram Murti Chaturvedi about
whom Hrishi had asked several years ago in one of his ATMJH posts?

Q. What was the real name of 'Anjum Pilibhiti'?

(No, these are not part of a quiz, or anything. I really would
like to know the answers, that's all).

I have a book of Kaifi Azmi's poetry printed face-to-face in Nagari
and Urdu. This book says his name is "atahar" Hussain.

Not only UVR. Even the Library of Congress says so. See:

http://www.loc.gov/acq/ovop/delhi/salrp/fazli.html

where you can hear the poet recite some of his work [you *did*
say it was an open book test :)] How nice it would have been if
the Lib. of C. had recorded Kaifi Azmi's real name, too, in this
same manner.
