Abhi To Main Jawaan Huun (#529)

"nadiya kinaare ho..."

Song: jaake laage nainaa
vo paaye nahiin chainaa
nadiyaa kinaare ho
guzaare din rainaa

Film: Shama Parwana (1954)
Singer: Suraiya, Asha Bhosle, chorus
Music: Husnlal Bhagatram
Lyrics: Majrooh Sultanpuri
*ing: Suraiya, Shammi Kapoor

Rather innocuous little line up there as today's tremulous fragment,
but it is quite amazing what that line imparts to an under-appreciated
and rather gorgeous melody from an otherwise well-known soundtrack
from Husnlal Bhagatram, probably most famous for "beqaraar hai koi"
and "tuune meraa yaar na milaaya" (both magnificent songs in their own
right).

A soft prelude in Suraiya's voice starts the song off..
mauj khaamosh hai, bahataa huaa dhaaraa Thaharaa
subah se shaam huii, dil na hamaaraa Thaharaa

As the prelude trails, an infectious, signature H-B beat sets in,
blends into some lovely alaapi by Asha, which in turn morphs into a
chorus of the mukhada. The interplay of voices - Suraiya, Asha, the
chorus, even a solitary male voice for a few seconds that sounds like
Dhananjay Bhattacharya's - is absolutely magical. And then, again, the
way the solo antaraas blend into the chorus of the mukhada.. yeah, lot
of beautiful blending in this song.

Strangely, I only recently discovered this song, despite having owned
the CD for quite a while now - hurrah for the shuffle setting on the
ipod. I tried to look for visuals of the song on youtube - found a
host of other tunes from this movie but not this one. Would like to
see the visuals - one imagines something like Baiju Bawra's "door koi
gaaye".

Er, I meant to say Shankar Dasgupta, not Dhananjay Bhattacharya.
