Directed by Atmaram Bhende. I saw this long ago when Lakshya was almost
unknown. If I remember correctly, Vijay Chavan was the bus driver and
Lakshya the conductor on the "toor". I don't recall Vijay Kadam in it,
but of course, he may have acted in some of the shows...
>vaasuchi saasu....dilip prabhavalkar
Hilarious :-) Dilip Prabhavalkar is simply awesome!
>tarun turka mhataare arka....madhukar toradmal
For some reason I can't pinpoint, this one left me a little disappointed.
>kuni tari ahe tithe....
Haven't seen it, but heard good reviews of it. As the name suggests,
it's a suspense drama. Wasn't Nishigandha Wadh one of the leads?
>hasvaphasvi...dilip prabhavalkar
Must see this one on the next trip home! Have heard good things about
it, and of course, "Chimanrao" is always a must-see :-)
To add a few more plays:
1. "Karaar" *ing Satish Pulekar and Swati Chitnis
Superb suspense drama, with plenty of humourous dialogue thrown in.
Satish Pulekar plays a double role in it, and this drama is a
must-see for the two scenes in which BOTH his characters are ON THE
STAGE at the SAME time!! Very neat trick, I thought :-)
2. "Tee Phularani" *ing Bhakti Barve-Inamdar and Sanjay Mone
Pu.La.'s *brilliant* adaptation of "Pygmalion" (My fair lady). Even
at this age, Bhakti Barve is great (and very convincing) in the title
role. Sanjay Mone is the professor (Higgins) and does a good job
(although old-timers insist that Satish Dubhashi was better :-)
3. "Gela Madhav Kunee Kade" *ing Prashant Damle, Sonia Mule, Vinay Yedekar
and <err, visarlo!>
If you enjoy the Lakshya-Saraf kind of comedy (I do!) then you'll
love this one too! Prashant Damle is hilarious as the bigamous Madhav
trying to keep his wives from catching on to his secret :-) Sonia
Mule is one of the wives, the other's name, I forget (could be a
Deshpande). Vinay Yedekar is his friend and confidante (and often the
fall-guy, to explain away Madhav's two-timing!). I thought Vinay
Yedekar was aping Berde to an extent, but he does it well, so who
cares? :-)
4. "Dhyaani Mani" *ing Neena Kulkarni and Shivaji Satam
Very serious, tense psychological drama about a childless couple.
Terrific (and I mean *terrific*) work by Neena Kulkarni. This one's
only for the serious-minded - certainly won't be classified as
"entertainment" - but the subject was so off-beat that I was
engrossed throughout. Shivaji Satam (of 1-0-0 fame) plays a good
supporting role, but this is really N.K.'s play (hey, my initials!:-)
5. "Ek Zunja Waryashi" *ing Dilip Prabhawalkar
I saw this a few years ago at the Tata Experimental Theatre in NCPA.
As has been mentioned already, the NCPA theatre and the Tata Theatre
are both great experiences for the naatya-rasik. Both are located in
the NCPA's complex at Nariman Point, Bombay. This play was one of
Dilip Prabhawalkar's serious roles, and boy, does he do justice to
ANY kind of role! (Check out his movie "Chaukat Raja" too). In this
play, he plays the "common man" - his character has no name -
fighting for justice on behalf of a stranger.

No, it's not Atmaram Bhende, but I'm pretty
sure that "Toor-toor" was directed by Purushottam Berde, Lakshya's
elder brother.

Hmm... in that case, maybe it was produced by Bhende, or maybe he
had a small part in it? - he was definitely involved in some way,
because, err... he gave us passes to the show at Shivaji Mandir :-)
