She was an accomplished singer, actress but very few remember her as a
good Music Director. As far I recollect SHAAHNAZ-1948 was the only movie
for which she scored the music.

I had over 35 78 rpm discs of her , 2 of them as AMIRJAN private songs
( Ghazal + Naat ) could be of late 30s. and 2 discs of SHAAHNAZ.

While trying to restore some of my old songs on Casettes I found to my
own surprise a song from the movie SHAAHNAZ and thought of posting.

' TAQDEER NE HUM KO HANSAKE HAI KYA KIYA '

As I listen to this song I was wondering as to why she didnot score
music for more films.I still remember the other 3 songs from this movie
and are wonderful compositions and excellent orchestrisation.

She announced a come back to movies in 1958 but due to some reason it
didnot materialise. Her premature death in 1965 has snatched away a great
musical talent.

I think her renditions in Elan/Mehboob/Naushad are much better.

Shahnaaz had another good song:
'ai nighah-e-yaar teraa shukariyaa
kar diyaa biimaar teraa shukariyaa'

Khan Saheb,Salaam
My posting on Amirbai was regarding her talent
as a Music Director and not as a singer. I agree ELAAN had very good
songs but for some reason they didnot live up long and faded away
from memory. Her songs from BHARTARI , SINDOOR and SHEHNAI are better
remembered even today.

Coming to Naushad despite his long association with stalwarts
like Ustad Jhande Khan,Mushtaq Husain and legendary Khemchand Prakash
just listen to his initial songs from STATION MASTER, DARSHAN, SHAARDA ,
KANOON etc and see how badly it was limping.I am a great admire of
Naushad Saheb but that is the fact

His music improved with Ghulam Mohd and his brother Mohd Ibrahim
joined him as his assistants.

Compare this with the maiden film of Amirbai and judge for your self
Her talent as a MD.

I asked Naushad this same question at his massive home in Bandra in
1997...i.e." Why was it that his earlier compositions had a "simplistic"
quality(I was trying not to be too critical...after all I was a guest in his
home)...some of his songs were "marching" songs with little discernible melody
whereas his later compositions used the full range of raagas and the 60s even
had more complex scores although they weren't as popular"
His response was that in the eraly days he was learning his craft and was a
"child" ...when he grew up, his craft developed and so did his taste in music
through learning and experimentation.

Yes,you are absolutely correct,I was a great admirer of Naushad Sab
and collected lot of his early discs which are not to be heard
normally on Radio and audio casettes.
Ghulam Mohd was elder to him by 14 years,he and his brother
Mohd Ibrahim were in the orchestra team of Ustad Jhande Khan Sab.

Ghulam Mohd parted with Naushad after Baiju Bawra as he had many
assignments on his own and indeed Naushad scored excellent music
for 3 successive movies AMAR, URAN KATOLA and SHABAB. He scored an
average music for MOTHER INDIA.

Although he scored very good music for SOHNI MAHIWAL it did not invoke
much response.KOHINOOR was a little better.
In the 60s MUGHAL-E-AZAM,GANGA JAMUNA,AADMI etc were good but
with every film his popularity dwindled and there were hardly any
good scoring in the seventies.

Naushad had a lot of respect for Ghulam Mohd ,he made him score
music for his own production MAALIK and the best tribute he paid to him
was by scoring background music for his incomplete PAKEEZA.
GREAT INDEED !!
