fedup with :)
Though I am not much good in giving out such information since you
have enquired about a branch of music that is the closest to my heart
I shall attempt! :)
If you are looking for Hindi songs sung by Dada Burman, then there are
about 7-8 more film songs and an equal number of non-film songs dating
from the mid 30s to the late 40s. SDB did not sing anything in Hindi
in the 50s till 'Sun Mere Bandhu re' from Sujata. After that he sang
'Mere saajan hain us paar'. After he got the national award for
singing 'Kahe ko roye' from Aradhana he seems to have sung quite a few
such songs.

SD Burman has a fairly large output in Bengali too, which (IMO) are a
better showcase of his singing skills. He has a good number of folk

There is a very popular compilation of his songs in Hindi titled 'Sun
Mere Bandhu re'. It is available both in cassette and CD format. You
should get most of his famous Hindi songs in that collection apart
from (what I consider) his finest .... 'Dheere se jaana bagiyan mein'
which does not appear in any HMV compilation.

Well Nani, how could I not consider your suggestions :), however
caustic they might seem in expression, they are more often than not
useful and logical. But unfortunately this time round, with a heavy
heart, I turn down your suggestion. *I*, quite like the name 'Burmanda
ka Pitara' and so do the rest of the people at SDBurman.Net. And since
one can never please everyone, we believe it is best to please
oneself! (which is the prime reason for running this website).
Ofcourse, if you have some suggestions on more relevent things like
the content, navigational ease(or lack of it), factual mistakes (btw
we did take note on your suggestion to change the title of the
'Anthology' section and shall do so soon) and the most important
thing... Burmanda's music then please do be my guest.

the Sanskrit original of words like "father".
So, it looks like some fan considers RD Burman his/her
elder brother (daa) and by implication SD Burman the
father of the da.
The expression makes you puke? Me too, but, so what?
Aesthetically, it fits the contents. What more can
you ask for?

That should read as : "Ummeed bhara panchhi". However I am not sure if this is
indeed his first Hindi film song. There is a triplet in Shikari which Kishore
sites as his first song, sung by SDB, KK, and ??(I forgot his name and don't
have access to copy of KK's book by Nerurkar). It is possible that this was his
first Hindi film song.

There is a film song sung by one S D Burman much before
that. It must be the same fellow, surely? It's a 1941/42 film
beginning with S or T. But I don't remember anything else;
I only remember wanting to check its availability but I have
never got around to doing it.

The song is 'Baaka sipahiya ghar jaiho'. There is no official mention
of SDB in this soundtrack though. Incidentally, I am still not sure
whether Shikari or 8 days was his first film. He has two songs in 8
days. I wonder why he then lent his voice to a song only 13 years
later? Why did he not sing in the interim? Health problems? Though he
did sing Bengali songs so I assume not so. Wonder why then.
Incidentally, SDB's first Hindi Film song as a singer is for a early
40s film called Taj Mahal where he sang for KC Dey IIRC.

whole block of Bhajans he sang around the same period (I assume) do
they owe allegiance to some film?
Also have you heard his bangla song 'Premer samadhi teere'? That one
also is based on Taj Mahal (infact SDB pronouces Taj 'Mahal' as Taj
'Mohol' :)). Was wondering if the Hindi one is a direct adaptation of
the Bangla one.

'Aath din'.. 'Babu babu re' .Any connection with NL Puri that someone

I don't think he did. Will have to scan the Geet Kosh to double check that.
AFAIK none of those Bhajan's owe allegiance to any film.

I don't think I heard that. I had heard the Hindi song from Taj Mahal song
only once. I thought SDB wud have said "Toj Mohol" :)

mentioned about him. His voice is similar to Jagmohan Sursagar.

I don't think S.L. Puri was a singer. At least I haven't heard his name as
such on any radio programmes in the 50's or later.
N.L. Puri was a good singer - I remember his song "kit gaye man kii naav ke
maanjhii, suujhat naanhii kinaaraa....." (MDed by O.P. Nayyar, IIRC). There
was another one too, but I forget that one.

Well, that is the correct grammar form in Urdu. It was the incorrect
grammar used by Raj Kapoor in Mera Naam Joker when he responds to Rajendra
Kumar in mid-sentence:
R. Kumar: "aur is ke liye aapko..."
R. Kapoor: "ek chhotii sii qurbaanii denii padegii....".
These dialogues occur as a prelude to the song "jaane kahaan gaye vo
din....", on the MNJ double-Lp set.

Actually it is not incorrect grammar. It is very much correct in *both*
Hindi and Urdu. However, you are right about the earlier sentence "denaa
*hogii* har qurbaanii". This is considered fine in Urdu, AFAIK. But at the
same time, Hindi considers it incorrect (especially in the modern usage).
In short, in Hindi only the following is considered correct:
"ek chhoTii sii qurbaanii denii pa.Degii"
In Urdu, AFAIK, the following is also accepted as correct, in *addition* to
the above:
"ek chhoTii sii qurbaanii denaa pa.Degii"
Knowledgable persons in Urdu may correct me if I am wrong.
Also, I don't think many songs, especially from post-50s use "denaa
pa.Degii" kind of construction. I would like to see some more examples if
there are. IMO, the other kind ("denii pa.Degii") is the only prevalent one.
That is why Ritu found the usage in the song jarring. I feel the same.

Nothing against 'piTaara', but it sounds rather like a box full of
a kid's knick-knacks and other playthings. Unless that's what you
