=>favs: "Phaili hui hai sapnon ki baahen aaja chalden kahin door...."

A lovely song, u bet!..I also love the Lata-Hemant duet "Peeche
peeche aakar choo lo hamen paakar chup chup jaana" in which all
Hemant Kumar does is "oho oho oho" :)

When u mention "yeh kisne geet chheda" I am reminded of another
singer I have left out here: _SUMAN KALYANPUR_. In my view Suman
Kalyanpur ranks among the top singers in Hindi films till date.
She has done complete justice to both heavy classical and light
songs. I can think of two SDB-Suman songs, other than the above
mentioned Mukesh-Suman K duet from "Meri soorat teri aankhen":

"na tum hamen jaano" from "Baat ek raat ki" (Dev-Waheeda)
"man mohan man mein ho tumhi?" from ???

Are there more songs? I would appreciate any info. regarding this.

=>relatively unknown "Apne honTon ki bansi banale mujhe, tere saanson me

Thanks, Renu for the lyrics!

=>Other singers to have sung under SDB's baton include Manna Dey ("Poochho na
=>kaise maine raen bitaee....." "Tere naena talaash kare jise....") & Geeta
=>Dutt ("Waqt ne kiya, kya hasin sitam...").

As I mentioned above Suman K should also be included in the list. I
wonder why SDB never asked RDB to sing! :) Just a stray thot!

=>Sami Mohammed (A Naushad fan).... who ranks SDB #3 among MD's.

A question re: SUMAN ->
In HMV's golden collection of Rafi duets (Sami, I can hear u sigh!)
there is a lovely song "din ho ya raat hum rahen tere saath, yeh
hamaari marzi" and the stats for the song are as follows:

Movie: Miss Bombay
Singers: Rafi with Suman Hemadi
MD: Hansraj Behl
Lyrics: Prem Dhawan

Is Suman Hemadi same as Suman Kalyanpur? The voice does sound the
same.

Yes, Hemmady was her maiden name. She is a Konkani originally from
the South Canara district of Karnataka. Interesting that Lata and
Asha are Konkanis too.

Suman K was a first-rate singer. It is just that Lata and Asha
have spoilt our ears by setting standards that are difficult to
meet. Even a casual hearing brings home the similarity in the texture
of the voices of Lata and Suman. A closer inspection, however, reveals
the the clear edge Lata has over Suman. The latter's voice cracks
in the upper register and the magical "phirat" that Lata is imbued
with is absent. There is also an element of strain in Suman's delivery.
By way of an example, I offer the Rafi-Suman duet from <what's that
film?>: "Itna hai tumse pyaar mujhe mere raazdaar, jitne ke aasmaan
pe taare haiN beshumaar...." Suman K struggles on the glide on
the "jitne."

I heard a relatively recent song from "Unnees Bees" (around 1980),
music by Rajesh Roshan, which was a Suman-Rafi duet and her voice
delivery sounds much better. The song is: Naaraazgi yeh aapki humme
jeene nahin degi... extremely melodious number. She must be in her
late 50s or early 60s now.

Yup, sK was indeed a great singer. She wud've ruled the singdom if she had
entered it now. It was the complete control of the Mangeshkar sisters, not to mention their talent, which kept her out. Her voice, at times, sounded so much
like Lata's. There are 2 songs over which I've always been confused bet. Lata
and Suman: 1. Paaon chhulene do phoolon ko inayat hogi...from Taj Mahal and 2. the title song from Dil ek Mandir. It's Lata in the former and Suman in the latter.

While she sounds almost exactly like Lata in some of her songs, there are others in which one can clearly make out the difference. For instance, in the movie
Bheegi Raat, Suman sounds great with Rafi in "Aise to na dekho ke behak jaaen
kahin hum, aaquir to ek insaan hai farishta to nahin hum....", while she sounds ill at ease in the female version of "Dil jo na keh saka wohi raaz-e-dil kehne
ki raat aaee..." Rajan has already listed the technical limitations of Suman.

This excellent semi-classical song is from the movie "Kaise Kahun". It's truly
an exceptional song with SDB at his classical best. It's sung by Suman, Rafi
and Batish. It's very difficult to make out whether it's Lata or Suman.

> Are there more songs? I would appreciate any info. regarding this.

I can't recall andy Suman/SDB combo right now, but there's a good song sung under Roshan's direction "Sharabi sharabi ye phoolon (?) ka mausam...". Roshan seems to have used Suman more than the others. Bheegi Raat is another eg.
Naushad used Suman in "Mera pyaar hi tu hai..." (Saathi), "Dil-e-betaab ko seene
se lagana hoga..." (Paalki) and some other movies.

I wonder too... just imagine "Dil aaj shaer hai GHam aaj naGHma hai..." or
"Hum bequdi me tum ko pukaare chale gae..." in RDB's voice!! :-)
