Hi RMIMers:

Happy New Year!

I am ecstatic to report that Dr. Manohar Lal Kapur (of Suffolk, VA)
was able to locate another one of our long-lost Judwan (is it Tidwan
now?) Bhai, named Asif, who by dint of his tremendous and tireless
efforts have been able to procure thousands of pre-1960 songs that
neither of us had in our collections.

What percentage of these songs are Hindi Film Songs? Most
of the Hindi Film Songs in 1931-1955 range which are missing
from the collective rmim collection are lost forever. It would be
great to be proved wrong on this point but I am sure nobody
can procure 'thousands' of such songs which are missing from
your (Professor Saheb's) vast collection.

Profjee, be practical..do u know what PRACTICAL means??
======================================================

How do YOU know for sure that the songs are PRIOR to 1960 ??
-----------------------------------------------------------

Thats your GUESS or Manohar Lal's general opinion as passed on to you.
Manohar Lal hasn't personall gone and checked up the LOT nor has ASIF
told Manohal Lal what type of songs he has in his stock ???.....All a
wild guess to keep up the sagging moods of your votaries...its
obvious, Profjee !

Remember profjee: this is a KARMA BHOOMI....yahan kaam karke...woh

I thought I should do a few calculations. The 3 HFGK volumes covering
1931-1960 period have approx 1,700 pages in them : 550 + 600 + 550.
Taking 18 as the average number of songs per page, we get about
30,000 songs for that period. How many of these did you already
have in your collection before this new booty of hundreds of tapes
was acquired? I remember Narsingh Sahab mentioning the exact
number of songs in his collection at an RMIM meet, though I guess
I can be sure that the number included non-film songs and also
perhaps songs (both filmi and non-film) in other languages.

According to HFGK itself, we get the following numbers of films and
songs

Vol 1 931 films 9,000 songs
Vol 2 1,236 films 11,000 songs
Vol 3 1,160 films 10,000 songs

I have

Vol 1 648 songs 7%
Vol 2 3,264 songs 30%
Vol 3 5,058 songs 51%

On DVD, I have the following numbers of films

Vol 1 33 films 3.5%
Vol 2 123 films 10%
Vol 3 398 films 34%

Long way to go, but thanks to Narsingh [We need more volunteers like
him; we need to extract video songs and post them too; Shalini is
doing a wonderful job there], songs have been extracted from about 80%
of these films and most of them are already on the website.

I am not expecting much from Vol 1, because records were not issued
liberally and movies are not available. [There are a few Wadia movies
(30s-40s) that are available and I do not have; I am trying to get
them.]

Records were issued in Vol 2 and even more in Vol 3. I do not yet have
a complete list of what we got and what we will get in the future, but
stay tuned.

In the meantime, Dr. Kapur seems to have located another long-lost
Bhai (from Karachi) and he is crazy about pre-1947 songs too. I am not
sure yet what he has. Stay tuned.

Indeed, my iPod collection which now numbers about 13,000 songs, has a
large number of non-film songs as well as almost the entire collection
of Brian Silas film tunes on piano. Most of the songs are from
1934-1970 (I do have a very large number of songs from post-1970
movies, on CDs - digitalized from audio tapes- but not on my iPod). A
long time ago, I had suggested creating a centralized library of film
songs to which all of us could contribute songs; the music library
would be available to one and all.

It has been suggested that some songs are "permanently" lost. I hope
not. Hopefully, the very large number of record collectors in India
have most of these "lost" songs. Just one example: a friend recently
sent me a song from Teerath Yatra (1958, music: Suresh Talwar). As
soon as I played the song, it sounded familiar even though I was
listening to it ("Meri preet mera pyar" - Suman Kalyanpur) after a
period of over 50 years. I have no recollection of the movie and might
have considered it as a lost movie. But at least one song turned up. I
am optimistic. If a centralized music library comes about, hopefully
we would have almost all, if not all, songs ever recorded.

I agree with you. Any new find should be welcolmed. This statistical
witch hunt is totally uncalled for. It indicates jealousy and lack of
respect from 1 or 2 members who should know better, considering their
age.
I am probably senior to them both in terms of musical listening
experience and music collection, but make no outrageous claims to be
able to enlighten others.
There is delusion of grandeur from those who have no musical taste. I
have not heard about Saigal, Pankaj, Jutheeka Roy, Kamla Jharia and
numerous great singers from the likes of these.

AGE, SENIORITY,etc so far as 'maturity in cine music listening' is
concerned is very essential indeed..PROVIDED,repeat PROVIDED if ONE is
able to deliver justice of his 'maturity of music-listening
accomplished ' in proving his point to his contemporaries.

Well - You could ask / retort: In what/which area?

REPLY: Indian Cine Music 1931 onwards ..upto the reign of 78 rpms.

The stark TRUTH is that YOU and many other SENIORS like YOU spread
across the world, either have a slow failing memory unless appropriate
anti-fade ideas are installed in your 'mindset' for immediate positive
response to any querry about CINE MUSIC " without the use of any GKs
or catalogues " . I do not claim that I know everything about the cine
music from 1931-65 or so...much remains to be researched...single-
handed in everything....just everything.

Thats the precise difference & there is nothing personally for me to
be ecstatic or rave about...pulling my collar up!! No,never.

I want to prove how DUMB and LISTLESS Rmimers are when something NEW
in cine music is POSTED for the RMIMers easy access. There too, they
bungle.

Everyone is more interested in STATISTICS only. Why?? For what
purpose?
Today /Tomorrow ..any moment ...if I QUIT this world...I would be
only too glad...very glad.I just don't bother what happens to my
library...LET IT GO TO HELL...If my sons sell or destroy them...I
don't bother...WHY WHY??

Becoz I don't EXIST..as simple as that. SO long as I am ALIVE & in a
physically/mentally normal state; I shall do everything possible
within my means to nourish-n-nurture the growth of BCSP in my style
( If Profjee can have his style, why not I ? ).

I am shcoked at such uncouth behavior. Calling us "dumb" among other
things. Most of RMIMers are simply interested in discussing whatever
little they know about Hindi film music. We are always anxious to
enlarge the frontiers of our knowledge by reading what other RMIMers
have to are say. We respect others; we respect their likes and
dislikes (pasand apni apni); we are thankful when we get to listen
some new (lost) songs; we willingly share our music with others; we
don't boast and, by and large, we don't belittle others. It is bad
manners to call otheres DUMB and LISTLESS when you don't even know who
we are. To put such tirade in print is pretty dumb.

First of all, I wish you many years of happiness. However, you show a
very child-like behavior when you are willing to let go your records
collection to hell after you are no more. A more responsible person
will try to establish some procedure whereby your precious collection
is saved for the future generations to enjoy.

50,000 is definitely an overestimate. I have seen the whole
collection. All the records have been converted to audio tapes. The
number of tapes is about 500. Each tape has a maximum of 20 songs, we
get max 10,000 filmi, non-hindi, non-filmi etc. songs. The number of
VHS movie tapes and DVDs is about 1,300 (they go all the way to 2001,
many are duplicates). Even assuming that there is no overlap between
audio and video, we get about 13,000 songs. Total maximum would be
about 23,000.

Let me make an approx scenario - please do not provide me any info in
lieu,please.

COLLECTION as Prof indicates:
----------------------------
If THAT/THOSE are 78rpms converted by ASIF-himself into audio cassettes
( 18-20 songs in a C-60 approx ), those cassettes MUST BE BY NOW
pretty OLD - this is certain - thus, reproduction could be AWRY - but
RMIMers are used to ITAB !!; Further, if the above COLLECTIONS are in
C-60 cassettes - yet again; they have become very old physically...the
tape quality again will be UNPLEASANT in reproduction - lekin RMIMers
ke liye ITAB phir bhi chalta hai..

Let Profjee offer his remarks HONESTLY

Jay is certainly old (senior). Knowledgeable for sure. Most
knowledgeable - that is a matter of opinion on which people can
disagree. Issue is not about Jay's knowledge. It is about his behavior
calling all RMIMers names. He has not met most of the people he calls
lazy. This man is extremely jealous of Hamraz. He despises Prof and

I have said it before and I will say it again - Jay has not earned the
right to be disrespectful towards others. His constant name calling
can reasonably qualify him as a nut.

Dear Dhananjay,

Pl check out this dated thread in RMIM:

http://groups.google.co.in/group/rec.music.indian.misc/browse_thread/thread/7655be07cd41cd21/76cd72fc18478c9e?hl=en&lnk=gst&q=archimoz+aalor#

This is not a thread where Jay-ji is on home turf (that is old Hindi &
Tamil light music) but he has posed a query.

A member (Aditya) immediately provides the correct answer.

Jay-ji's immediate reaction is 'are you sure? Have you heard the
songs?'

So another equally knowledgeable member Mahesh-ji re-affirms that
Aditya-ji is correct.

There is not even a single word of thanks from Jayaraman-ji.

Why should knowledge and basic courtesy be in inverse proportion?

Do we not have have some glorious examples of members poccessing ample
quantitities of both here in RMIM? (Sanjeev, U V Ravindra, Afzal-saab,
Urzung-saab are a few names that come to my mind, there are many many
more).

Unprovoked rudeness and lack of basic courtesy is very very baffling
to me, personally. Especially on the internet.

I am not baffled by the stuff.

Shri Jayaraman's posts are also noteworthy for his stunning use of the
language. The sooner the forum readers learn how to decipher his
posts, the better. I think his English is far superior compared to his
(undoubtedly considerable) knowledge of music.

And why should I or anyone else "learn" how to decipher Jay's posts? I
have met the man. I have spent a whole afternoon at his music room for
one of his listening sessions. The man is egotist. He is jealous of
and insults people like late Satish Kalra, Surjit Singh, Harmandir
Singh. In my (not so humble) opinion, any one of these people have
brought more joy, information and knowledge to readers of this forum.

In one of his posts, he talks about his passion for music despite
opposition from his family and bosses at work. Huh? Really? Unless you
are using your work place and work resources for your personal
passion, no reason for your boss to get involved in your pursuits.

When you call Jay's English far superior to his knowledge of music, I
don't know if this is a backhanded compliment or a joke....

When I say 'colorful', on this forum I mean in terms of behaviour ( as

To exhibit my BEHAVIOUR as you all perceive - I keep on asking to

There has always been a VALID REASON-n-cine music-oriented in my posts
which the average RMIMer by virtue of his inherent INSENSITIVINESS

reason being his TOTAL BLANKNESS-n-BLINKNESS to the relevant posts

and so finds an OUTLET to vent his emotions on my behaviour. Thats
it !!

Now, IF the earnest music loving Rmimer DID POSSESS any data to

BCSP : I think this is where your study of music is at a very immature
level. It has been proven through research of western music that music
does not always make a person mentally strong. I think you are using
old methodologies to study the effect of music on human beings during
the listening sessions in Dombivali. Still, you will probably agree
that at least Professor Saheb is strong mentally. I like your posts
but sometimes you overstep your boundary. How can you ask a Professor

either through his passion for music or because of other reasons. Of
course you are also mental(ly strong). No doubt about it. All in good
humour, please.

I totally agree. Many RMIMers get pinched very easily.

You may not be, but I'm pretty sure that a lot of RMIM-ers are. I even
remember Sanjeev actually losing his immaculate composure for a
fleeting second and commenting to Jay-ji that the latter had little to
no right to question his (SR's) knowledge on Tamil music & Carnatic
music based on inferences about the person's age.

(Sanjeev, I apologise for bringing up your name as reference but you
are one RMIM-er whom I admire a lot and look up to in terms of your
knowledge & skills. Promise not to repeat this in future)

Not sure what to make of this. I had raised an issue about courtesy
and not about command over the language. I'm sure Jay-ji's command
over the language is good (sans the liberal use of capital letters).

Oh no !

Even Profjee has got pinched to an EXTENT..that he did react viciously
a couple of times earlier on, in his vernacular. But, I have
criticized for their APPLICATION...their foolhardiness in
introspecting and searching for the eluding answer in their mindset.
Thats where precisely, research comes in....requiring a go-getter
attitude at whatever cost. Have they ever done this single handed??
They cannot do and never will...because of the four(4) deadly INTRA
TENSIONS in every human being during EVERY SINGLE DAY of their
individual lives. BELIEVE IT OR NOT - its your will-n-wish..coz its
your LIFE.

GR's music has all along been a rejuvenator for me in terms of ENERGY
LEVEL- His music has been always been CELESTIAL in my system. All
targeting arsenals fall like duds before it - believe it or not. Thats
how I see music. its my method.

Westerners may have their own researched ideas.... I have my own, a
mentally nourished one every day that keeps away all those four deadly
intra tensions that corrode positive ACTIONS -- once again, believe it
or not.

Maano to Bhagwan...nahi to PATTHAR ....! to keep singing: O pathhar ke
bhagwan tu hai kahan, teri duniya mein lag jaaye aag...l.

This is absolutely amazing stuff!

Surjit Singh simply announced that thanks to Asif, a dear friend of Dr
Kapur, they have gotten hold of 1000 pre-1960 songs (having talked to
Dr Kapur myself, the figure is closer to 1400 songs). Knowing Surjit
Singh and Kapur sahib, I was sure that eventually all RMIMers will
have access to these songs, a wonderful news indeed and which was
applauded by a number of RMIMers. For some strange reason, Shree Jay
ji got totally bent out of shape. For example, his question "how can
you be sure it is pre-1960?" We have been waiting for Jay's authored
"The Complete and Totally Accurate Hindi/Tamil/Telgu Film Geet Kosh"
for many years now. In the absence of this compendium, we are forced
to rely on Shree Hamraz ji's Geet Kosh books, something that seems to
annoy Jay ji.

Why all this reaction and discussion? We should all applaud Asif, Dr
Kapur and Surjit Singh for what they have done (or about to do) to
bring a large number of "lost" songs to the forefront and make them
available to us, the music lovers, for free.

This forum is meant for ' cine music discussion ' - this is not a
forum for etiquette training - thus colorful people are bound to be
there whether you like it or not.

If you can debate on cine music, you can be considered as something to
reckon with... something to be imbibed upon in the area of cine music

Can you provide anything fresh and unknown to the rmimers in the field
of Indian Cine Music - not by information but with something to LISTEN-
n-SAVOR and thus get ENLIGHTENED in the process !

Can you do it??? Y or N . Confine your answer to my question, please.

Who is denying that, Narsing saab? I am not denying that at all.

GKs do not annoy me at all - you are reading me wrong.

Sometime back, maybe a month or so; Waheed had asked Profjee on this
forum some info pertaining to the UNLISTING OF SONGS from the Lahore-
made film: AANCH ('47 or '48). whose music was provided by Inayat.

Amazingly, GK for some reasons or the other, has drawn a complete
'blank' related to this film. The songs of AANCH continue to be
broadcast by SLBC even today.

If Profjee is IGNORANT about this info, obviously the 'guru' has just
no idea of the film in question.

If you carefully scrutinise the original HMV catalogue of gramaphone
records issued uptil 1949, you will see therein AANCH, the film in
question.

Ab bolo, how are you all going to defend the 'guru' for this lapse.
But Rmimers are powerfully UNITED. They will always come up with some
sort of lame excuse.

Even assuming what you are saying is true, what is the big deal?
Har Mandir freely admits that his compilation is a work in progress
and
he explicitly asks for help from everybody in filling in the gaps
(read his prefaces).

We know that some extremely mean-spirited and insanely jealous people
never help him and they would rather die with what they know than let
others know.

And another thing that you probably may never realize is that
published book editions are fixed
but that does not mean that he has stopped collecting info.
In fact one can see the progress he made between the two editions of
volume 3.
I am sure that similar progress has been made for other volumes.

You are wrong on two counts, Jay.

> This forum is meant for ' cine music discussion '

Have you read the RMIM charter? Here is what it says:
"rec.music.indian.misc is an unmoderated group created for the
discussion, promotion and exchange of ideas on all aspects of Indian
music not related to either classical or film music"

> this is not a forum for etiquette training

All users of usenet fora are expected to follow basic "netiquette".

About the prefaces, do you think I am unaware of that on HH's part?
Remember, I have no pesonal vendetta against ANYONE - Its the
APPLICATION towards the project Kanpur has taken up. Thus, how on
earth can you dub anyone as 'mean' and 'insanely jealous'. Besides, as
you retort: Jealous....jealous of what Can you throw more light on
that issue?
The well known jealous have already parted off - you know that !
Right from the beginingfrom the days of LB and the time when the
project was in the liquid stage; I have had no dealings of any sort
with HH. You can confirm that with your friend. I have never
approached him for any personal help...in fact its the other way
about.

Has HH forgotten the days when he used to receive scores of songs from
me by post alongwith record numbers and vital info regularly thence by
mail?? I do not mind getting slammed left-n-right - I can withstand
that with TRUTH on my side.
So before you accuse or levy charges kindly double check up and slam
them on me with renewed vigour. It just doesn't affect me in any way.

You call it as no BIG DEAL? But the fact is, you have missed it or
ignored it knowingly or unknowingly. WHY? WHY?
In fact, Waheed did point out it out to you in an earlier post of his.
You never responded - tantamounts to ignoring, in general...such type
of counter arguments can always prop up ..you know that very well.

Whether I should help HH or not in his project is my personal
decision. which I can render or withdraw anytime without assigning
reasons. After all, the WORLD is very very big. If not Jay, someone
else would always be forthcoming and thats how the project progressed
over the years.

How far are the filledup-missing portions authentic...is entirely a
different topic for moot.

Jealousy has no justification, unless you can prove it otherwise with
the help of your votaries

Chetan : with all respects and with malice towards none
==========================================

I know all of that - don't get that netetiquette as prime reason for
the RMIMers reticence to my posts. If my netetiquette was
questionable , do not respond at all - let the dog bark at the
SUN...why do you all get pinched , rather thickly pinched at the
apathy I point out everytime about the subject-related issue. Yes, the
subject of issue, the topic in discussion.. its cine music after all.

If the concerned Rmimer were to be inherently well informed /
knowledgeable and in a good mood to counter my statements with
genuine, authentic reasonings...I bet, you all would have kept
debating with counter arguements in such a manner wherein you would
never have brought in the netetiquette reason . You just have no other
options to debate and find a lame reason to 'skirt' the real topic.

Profjee:

Read the 2nd para of your post once again:
-------------------------------------------------------------
quote: 'We know that some extremely mean-spirited & insanely jealous
people never help him..etc' unquote

we know MEANS you & HH are pukka certain

some extremely mean spirited & insanely jealous people MEANS ?? - I
will tell u that !
=============================================================

"some" can be anybody but more than ONE person - You cannot dispute
this point !

"mean-spirited & insanely jealous people" MEANING : Reference to which
mean people are there in the eyes of HH who have NOT helped him - His
VERY CLOSE SIDE-KICKS / moving around with him 24 hrs round the clock
during uptil the
christening of his GKs had a ready reckoner of possible cooperation or
non-cooperation for the project undertaken...which HH has passed it on
to YOU / Profjee during your innumerable teleconversationswith HH
related to the project. Obviously, YOU & other affluent like you have
their personal 'stakes' for whatever purposes ...You cannot dispute
this fact from the core of your heart.

The project did have its ups-downs and delays for any no.of
reasons...after all : MONEY whether it is INR or USD or Sterling
POUNDS or German Deutche...cannot solve every problem of the project
under execution midway. Naturally, stake holders are concerned and
keep prodding HH to expedite completion of the project ASAP.

The masses, knowledgeable as well as the 'not haves' ONLY WANT the
release of the GKs fast. There was just no alternative for HH
( including his close personnel) but to complete the project in an a
manner as the music loving public see it today...thats the saga .

How did I get pinched in such a scenario as perceived by you in your
latest post. Perhaps you wanted to CONSOLIDATE the judgement of Nani's
post over that of mine wherein I also included YOU as a victim of the
'pinch' a couple of times.

The picture is CLEAR - GKs cannot make any progress
authentically..repeat authentically You know why??
Becoz of ITAB application of RMIMers - , REMEMBER : I have targetted
their APPLICATION only and have nothing PERSONAL against RMIMer.

Professor Saheb:

Are you talking about Dr. Asif, who lived in Elmont (Long Island),
New York (my last contact
with him was in 1995).

If so, he indeed has a very large collection (including many from
Pakistan) and used
to sell Audio Cassette under the brand name: Music Mahal

Strangely, few Titles (having songs from films, but not the
compilation, e.g. - Rare Old Songs)
released by him and by Advance Sargam (Mr. Amarjit Singh) are
identical.

He did have a web-site, but I have not checked it for long time.
