All India Radio - Instrumental Music / Prior to News Broadcast / 60s
==================================================

In 60s, Akashwani (that is: All India Radio), used to play a instrumental
piece, prior to broadcasting the News in English (or may be Hindi news).
I like this music a lot and was wondering, if anyone has ever heard
the full version. Many years ago, I had recorded few seconds of it from
the radio and have uploaded to my site for members to hear, and be able to
talk about this specific item. The details are:

The zip file: Akashwan.Zip 164,448 bytes can be downloaded from
the FTP server. The instructions on how to do it, are at the web site

AKASHWANI - Instrumental Music - Prior to English News. MP3

0:28 minutes - snippet only, very low quality - statics and noises

Request to Members
===============

Please post your comments, whether or not you like this instrumental
piece and furthermore, any suggestions as how to get a good
quality recording of this music.

Special Request to Mr. Nnaniwadekar
===========================

It seems you are quite involved in unearthing the Music Directors,
whose name/s did not appear on the records.

I am interested in finding the composer of this musical piece. Thanks
in anticipation.

I do not remember that it was used as a signature tune
before English news. It was mostly used as a filler
between two programs. Once and only once I heard it in
full in an instrumental recording program. IIRC, Mr
Gopal Mittal was the announcer/dj of that program. He
had PERHAPS announced it as a rachna by New Theater
Orchestra, but I am not sure. The next piece played was
Bhairvin by HMV Delhi Radio Orchestra, an even more
enjoyable piece. I used to have this 78 in 50s. Its
flip side was 'kafi', dark maroon color lable.

Other instrumental records used as fillers were:
Ghungruu, harmonium, tabla composion called
'ghungruu tarang', comp. Master Manhar Barve

Thumri in raag Mishr on clarinet by Rajin Circar
(I have some 30 seconds recording of this)

Piluu on flute by D Amel

There were others which I am unable to describe.

Thanks Urzung Saheb.

If you are recalling this info from memory then it is incredible. I don't
know, if I will be able to locate the recording of this instrumental
piece, but will try searching for

New Theaters Films in Hindi Film Geet Kosh

and then any listing of Instrumental Music
(generally listed as: New Theater Orchestra or
Vadya-Vrind Sangeet )

MESSAGE FOR OTHER MEMBERS

I was able to modify my web-site at AngelFire. The sound-clip

Did New Theaters had their own orchestra team ? some songs
I understand were recorded on NT discs , does that mean they had their
own recording studio ?
Just for my info did some of the famous productions like
Kardar and Mehboob had their own musicians in the orchestra team ?

Any feedback on the above is appreciated .

Regards ,
Anil

A: CONFIRMED INFO.
==================

New Theaters had the best recording studio, rather one may say
the best sound recordist (his name was Kamal ?) and a small write-up
to that effect can be read in the book: Encyclopaedia of Indian
Cinema.

B: PROBABLY CORRECT
=====================

NT had many musicians on their payroll. Some of Saigal's songs
have excellent orchestra piece in the beginning, e.g. Ik Bangla Bane
Nyara

If from a movie then it was most likely a title music. A bit more
about
this composition. A few seconds clarinet piece follows where your clip
ends. About half the comp is in slower (sad) pace. I can recall about
2/3 of the whole comp which was less than 3 minutes. I liked it and it
has stayed with me. Searching for this sort of recording is more
tougher
than other catagories. One needs tons and tons of good luck to find
them.

I am giving below particulars of a 78rpm disk's lable:

NEW THEATRES
HINDUSTANI RECORDS
* **
ORCHESTRA H 748
......
......
NEW THEATRES ORCHESTRA
HSB 2121

Recorded by Hindustan M P & V Syndicate Ltd.

*= Man playing flute
**= Elephant facing the flute player
... words in Hindi/Divangri

I hope Mr Anil finds this info helpful.

Thanks again Urzung Saheb

I know it will be a tough job. I will scan all of Saigal's and Pankaj
Mullick's songs (have a small list) and from there can easily
pick up most of the New Theater Films.

I am familiar with Hindustan Records Label (have one 78 rpm
records from them). I call it 'Murliwala Baba' label.

MSG FOR Mr. Anil
===============

I don't think any other studio, including Bombay Talkies / Filmistan /
Filmalya, Mehboob, Kardar, Ranjit, R.K., Parbhat / Rajkamal /
V. Shantaram Production had musicians on their payroll.

Rajkamal had a very good Recording Studio (Reference: Notes on
LP / Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baje - 1955 / Recordist: Mangesh Desai)
and may be: Mehboob also had a recording studio.

Is it really! It may be incidental, but during the last 3 trips to India
(am just back from one), each time, I came across this disc with NT's
banner music. And that too in remote south :). (I come from a village in
coastal Andhra Pradesh.) But not having deep interest in Hindusthani
film music, I never bothered to get it transfered on to tape.

Not even Prabhat and Bombay Talkies? If so, more studios from the south
used to have composers and musicians on their payroll.

Sreenivas

Mr. Sreenivas:

I would appreciate if you can clarify some part of your msg.

1 Did you happen to see a 78 rpm record of the Instrumental Piece,
which I have tentatively titled: All India Radio - Instrumental Music ?

Unless the record was played for you, there is no way you
could assertain that the 78 rpm disc had this instrumental

2 Or are you refereing that you saw some NT label discs, the
contents of which were listed as ' NEW THEATER ORCHESTRA'

3 In any event, when you visit your native village next time, can
you please get me a copy of those songs on a good quality
Cassette Tape. I will reimburse you for your expenses Plus

I am interested only in the Instrumental Music, which will be
listed as: New Theater Orchestra or Vadya Vrind Sangeet
or Title Music.

I will give all these instrumental pieces, alternate titles like

Sreenivas, Symphony # 1, Symphony # 2 and so on

I have fairly large number of K L Saigal & S D Burman songs,
so am not interested in other items

Thanks

SUDHIR

Dear sudhir ji,
am searching for the instrumental tunes that AIR used to play in between programmes as fillers, mostly by jayanth and honeys guitar preludes of popular songs of the 80s. any idea where i can get them.

I moved to USA in early 70's, so have no idea as to what
AIR played in 80's.
