Dear Friends

Encouraged by the response to "Dekhtee hi raho" I am posting lyrics os
"Tu hum ko dekh"

Film - Zindagi aur Hum
Music - Roshan
Singer - Lata
Year - 1962

Tu hum ko dekh aur hamari nazar se dekh
meethi ada se pyar ko pyari nazar se dekh
Tu hum ko dekh ...

rangata gulo.n se chand se ujalisi chandani
bulbul se tarane liye koyal se ragini
rangata gulo.n se chand se ujalisi chandani
saba husne dil fareba kiye moorati bani
Tu hum ko dekh ...

hum wo nahin ke ho na asar jin ki chaha mein
yeh yaad rakh ke tu hai hamari nigaaha mein
hum wo nahin ke ho na asar jin ki chaha mein
lekin hai eka sharta muhabbat ki raaha mein
Tu hum ko dekh ...

phoolo.n se khelana hai baharao.n se aake mil
milanake baata hai ye jara muskuraa ke mil
phoolo.n se khelana hai baharao.n se aake mil
ai hoshdar hosh ka parda uthake mil

Tu hum ko dekh aur hamari nazar se dekh
meethi ada se pyar ko pyari nazar se dekh
Tu hum ko dekh ...

A few points.

1. Who is Veer Muhammad Puri? Has he written any other song?
2.The second line of mukhda may need correction.
3. I am not sure about word "moorati", again corrections welcome.
4. The structure of stanzas.First line repeats as third line. Are there
any other examples of this type of songs?
5.You start liking the only after you listen more than 10 times. It is
like poetry recital.

I hope you will enjoy this lyric.

"ko" construction looks looped, though it does give right meaning. Could
better be
meethi ada se, pyar ki pyari nazar se, dekh
or
meethi ada se, pyar se, pyari nazar se, dekh

> rangata gulo.n se chand se ujalisi chandani

ra.ngata, cha.nd, ujali si, cha.ndani

> saba husne dil fareba kiye moorati bani

tab husn-e-dilfareb ki ye moorati bani
Though I am faintly recalling that "ye moorati bani" could be "soorat
hasee.n bani"

> phoolo.n se khelana hai baharao.n se aake mil

baharo.n
one "to" appears very much required, but can be thought as implied.

> milanake baata hai ye jara muskuraa ke mil

???
(maybe) milane ki baata hai ye jara muskuraa ke mil

> phoolo.n se khelana hai baharao.n se aake mil

first time seeing the use of hoshdaar, though correct use. (could be
more common hoshiyaar)

Thanks for corrections.Confusion about second line still remains. Both
of your versions seem to be better than my version.
However I feel "soorat haseen bani" is not correct, "ye moorati bani"
is corrrect.
I never thought that "dilfareb" may maybe one word, because Lata sings
as two words.Does it change the meaning?
word "to" is not there in third stanza.

Thanks, Vinayak, for bringing up--or, for us, revisitng--this gem
from the vast treasury of gems of Roshan. I said "revisitng" because
the words to the song were posted six year ago by Neha. It is a
good idea to browse the consolidated ISB occasionally. Thanks
nevertheless, because of the interesting discussion questions you
have raised, and because, inspite of many people's efforts, the
lyrics were left in an unsatisfactory state. Even now, there is
one point in the song, where after repeated listenings, I find
it difficult to take a position on what the word is. So, a
discussion is in order.

It is not "ko", but "se". To me, the first word sounds like
"uu.nchii"? Does "uu.nchii adaa se" (with lofty elegance) make
sense? Does "miiThii adaa se" (with sweet flirtatiousness) work
better?

The line is

tab husn-e-dil_fareb kii ye muurati banii

"dil_fareb" is an adjective meaning "heart-captivating".

"zaraa", regardless of what Lata says, but she does
pronounce it correctly.

I have never come across the name--for any other song, nor in
any other context. Can Gurcharan Sandhu help? This geet is so
good, it is worth mounting a search for anything else by him.
And, it is perhaps hopeless to look for a print of the film. I
don't know on whom the song is pictruized. I'd give a lot to
watch Nalini Jaiwant present this song.

The soundtrack is studded with Lata solos. I remember only
one other and that song is a smash:

. jaa re jaare merii chhoD chunariyaa
ab mai.n nyaarii jhuuluu.ngii

The lyricist for the other songs is also an unfamiliar name:
Shivkumar. I wonder if it is the same person as the fomer
announcer for Sri Lanka, Shivkumar Saroj, who some years
later came up with a few film and non-film hits, only to
disappear soon after that.

My guess is that the poet meant it as a geet with stanzas consisting
of three rhyming lines and it was Roshan's brilliant improvisation
to repeat the first line before moving to the final line.

I fell in love with the song when I heard it for the first time
in the mid-60s. Being at the mercy of radio programming, I could
hear it only two or three or more times then. I had to wait nearly
a quarter century to hear it again, when it showed up in one of the
more interesting Lata compilation tapes put out by EMI: Lata
Mangeshkar: Mood Indigo. It includes a number of songs that were
not available then and a few for which it is still my only source:

. bhiinii bhiinii Khushabuu (Naushevan-e-Adil; now available as a
soundtrack cassette)
. kajare badaravaa (the RD Burman gem from 'Pati Patni')
. piyaa milan kii aas (SN Tripathi's demonstration of how to handle
Lata at a very high-pitch)

Here's the ISB entry with revisions. I hope the "uu.nchii/miiThii/
someting else?" issue gets sorted out soon.

Ashok ji, the song 'Tu humko dekh hamaari nazar ko dekh...' is one of
my favourites too. The debated word has been sung by Lata as 'uu.nchi'
and not 'meethi'.

The rest of the songs are:

1934 AMRIT MANTHAN 'Dekho-2 sakhiyaan kaisi chhaayi baadri...'
'Aarzoo_en dil ayaan karne ke bhi qaabil nahin...'
'Jiyaa moraa naa bisaare waahi ko saanjh sanwaare...'
'Kamsini men dil pe gham kaa vaar kyon...'

1938 NAND KUMAR 21 Songs under the name Pandit 'Veer'; MD:JP Kapoor

Enjoy if you can find them!
