Answers and Results
-------------------
Here we are with the much-awaited results of the latest RJGK.
The response and participation was indeed heart-warming. Also
remarkable was the number of first-time entrants. A big thank you to
all the participants who have made this the most popular RJGK quiz so
far --- there were in all 70 teams and 93 participants.
A special word of gratitude for our beta-testers, without
whose help during both the setting and the grading of the quiz things
wouldn't have been so nice.
We are most grateful for the generous comments that the
participants have directed towards this quiz. It was very rewarding to
see so many people enjoy themselves. The theme of the quiz was
appreciated by all, thus supporting our belief that songs are life,
and that life is a song. :-)
Thank you all,
Swapna & ND

General Comments:
=================
[Hema] :-
First, my comments about your quiz.
1. The topic was very "full of life", i.e. very enjoyable.:-))
2. The choice of songs is good. I enjoyed the quiz a lot.
3. The highlight of the quiz are the introductions before every clue.
4. And the greatest thing I liked about this quiz is that it is short
and snappy. Neither did I have to take the "laThi" of my Webster's
dictionary, nor did I have to keep wondering if there is an end to the
text.
[K. Vijay Kumar] :-
Why this choice to limit the number of qustions to 25? I felt there
was an unwritten rule fixing the no. of RJGK questions at 30, and for
Chitrahaar at 25.
You seem to be one of the "kids" that Dr. Surjit Singh refers to
fondly in his posts. Maybe I should say the same, too. Practically all
songs from the post-1970 era does not augur well for us oldies.
# [ND & Swapna] :- We wanted to keep the quiz short and sweet. As
# regards the choice of songs, most songs featured in this quiz are
# quite good by any standards --- this was especially for people who
# believe that good music ended in the pre-70s.
[Rajiv Shridhar] :-
I saw your repost with the deadline, and decided to spend a few
minutes sending in my entry. I haven't participated in an RJGK or
Chitrahaar for some time now, and thought I could spend some time on
this one.
Guess what? I've spent more than a few minutes, almost two hours. But
it was real fun once I realized how you were threading the songs
together, and it became more and more interesting. If I couldn't
derive the answer directly from the lyrics clue, I was usually able to
either scan through the write-up for the clue or to sort-of guess at
the song through the "thread" you've woven around the whole package.
[Vandana Sharma] :-
The subject of the quiz enticed me into taking a look at it and then
deciding to participate. This is the best I have done so far in all
the quizzes I have participated in, which is less than five! You were
very generous with the clues and the ITRANS helped.
[Vandana Venkatesan] :-
One of the main reason for my liking this quiz is because it is one of
the few quizzes to focus almost entirely on songs from the late-70s
and 80s.
Also liked the gradual progress of the quiz from songs expressing
simple delight in living to more philosophical musings,
disillusionment etc. Nicely organized!
Cluing was perfect! You made it pretty simple to read, yet didn't
give away too much.
Finally a request - please include in the results post the other songs
you know of the films in the quiz.
# [ND & Swapna] :- We will give it a shot.
[Snehal] :-
This was the quiz I was really waiting for; for it's about one of my
favourite song-topic. I really enjoyed, rather liked your comments
before every (it's different matter, I couldn't identify all songs)
clue about life and how the song projects those feelings.
Now flames; isn't it a rule of RMIM nowadays ? :) I didn't expect
songs like 'Pyar Zindagi Hai' as I feel it's not at all a fit for this
RJGK's theme. Same about 'Tere Bina Zindagi Se'. If they are fine then
ommition of 'Ye Zindagi Usi Ki Hai' will need lot's of explanation! I
can understand non-inclusion of some of my favourite songs from this
genre as they are very old and mostly obscure. But let me take this
opportunity to mention a few:
Zindagi Khwab Hai - Chhoti Chhoti Baaten (1965) [ Mukesh ]
Qismat Ka Likha Na Tale, Na Koi Bas Chale, Ye Kya Hai Zindagi
- Parichay (1957) [ Rafi ]
Zindagi Usi Ki Jo Zindagi Se Khele - Kinara (1950)? [ Lata ]
OK what about this classic Manna De song: 'Jeevan Se Lambe Hain Bandhu
Ye Jeevan Ke Raste' ?! I am surprised that this song didn't find a
place in a RJGK featuring 'The Song of Life' !!! Also, is it necessary
to have "jeevan", "zindagi" etc. words in the song, for it to qualify
? How about 'Naiya Teri Mazdhaar Hoshiyaar' from Awaraa ? Isn't it
actually about life ? Also isn't life about living ? Do you think
'Jiyo To Aise Jiyo Ke Sub Tumhaara Hai' a misfit ?
I also missed one of the finest song of this type from Shankar
Jaikishan:
Ajab Hai Daastaan Teri Ai Zindagi, Rula Diya Hnsaa Diya Kabhi ...
I also missed one C H Atma song (though obscure, thanks to HMV it's
available on one of C H Atma's compilation) from Bhai Sahab (1953?):
Unchi Nichi, Nichi Unchi Dagar Jeevan Ki,
Pyare Sambhal Ke Chalna Manzil To Hai Badi Door ...
Well, before you dump me saying 'he knows only to complaint'; a big
thanks for this quiz. Very good theme indeed, well prepared quiz.
# [ND & Swapna] :- As you must have noticed, our selection focus was
# most certainly on the post-70s music. Also, the number of songs of
# life is so vast, it is virtually impossible to satisfy everyone's
# choice (so we only satisfied ours). All the same, thanks a lot for
# reminding us of some wonderful gems from the olden times.
[Abhay] :-
I must congratulate you for following the 3-part format very
consistently in the quiz. This was also a very well-formatted quiz
from indentation and spacing point of view. (You didn't expect this
reaction, right ?). There is some room for argument, whether some
songs are really songs of life. But a superb quiz overall. I was
pleasantly surprised to see some songs here. Not that they are not
good, or unrelated. Some of these songs were my childhood favourites.
I haven't heard them in years. In fact never ever heard them again
after my short-lived fascination from school days. Still, I could
crack them in a second !!! God knows what kind of indexing mehanism
our brains use ! I don't like these songs as much, but they revived
some nice memories. Thanks for that. I will mention these songs as we
go along. Quite enjoyable quiz ! Great effort.
[Roomi Sinha] :-
That was a REALLY COOL [i.e. easy/encouraging/feel good/NICE song
selection] kinda quiz!! Thanks! :-) There's hope afterall!
[Ravi Krishna] :-
Nothing personal but the quiz is very boring. I could answer all
questions (except one partially) without even thinking twice.
# [ND & Swapna] :- One person's wine is another's poison, we suppose.
# A lot of other participants found that 'easy is good'. :-)
[UVR & Pavan (RaVan)] :-
Very good topic, lovely song selection and good clueing, though a
trifle too easy for most songs. Very naughty of you to have no Rafi
songs in the list, and to fill it up with KK. Very naughty, indeed!
Too many familiar songs, too. I didn't check, but I'm sure at least
95% of the songs are in the ISB. Makes the quiz kinda easy with all
so many clues about film name, MD, lyricist etc.
[Abhay] :-
Are you not aware of many songs by Rafi having the word zindagee in
it, or you didn't want to include them :-) :-) There are so many KK
and RDB songs. This was expected, but then as expected is my
complaint, I am sure. :-)
# [ND & Swapna] :- BaDe 'Rafian' bane phirate ho, even after getting
# song no. 12 you claim there are "no Rafi songs"? :-) Or do you not
# consider that to be a Rafi song?
======================================================================
Statistics by artist selection
==============================
Contrary to expectations, this quiz did not reflect the biases
of the organizers as much, barring the obvious KK-RDB leanings. There
too, the choice was more governed by selection of popular and good
songs that we liked a lot, which put them predominantly in the post
1970s era. No attempt was made when selecting the songs to achieve
parity in terms of representation to various artists. Yet, in
retrospect, we have not only managed to cover a fairly decent range,
but also include some artists who are typically not represented often
enough in RMIM quizzes or discussions, as evidenced by the statistics
below.

Answers and song-specific comments:
==================================
Predictably, most of the clues had a fairly high 'rate of
solvency'. There was least amount of 'Agreement' on clue 8, which was
designed to be our toughest clue. We were apprehensive about including
a telefilm-based clue, but surprizingly a lot of people remembered
'Janam' and the song in clue 24. The 'Aandhi' song in clue 11 was a
sitter, of course, and everyone got it. The reason to include it ---
that was one song everyone would most certainly expect in this quiz,
and we didn't want to disappoint. :-)
We have tried to be accurate to the best of our knowledge
regarding the pstats for the answers. In case there are any mistakes,
omissions etc we will greatly appreciate your help in fixing those.
Also, please add to the list of other songs that we have appended to
each answer.
For each song, we have first repeated the clue from the
quiz. The clue number is followed by the solvency fraction --- number
of people who got it right. The clue is followed by the answer along
with some pstats, and then we have listed some other songs from the
film that we remember. In the end, there are song-specific comments by
some of the participants and our response.
Here are the answers...

1. [61/70]
Life begins at birth, but one really starts to live only when one
discovers one's goals and strives to achieve them. It is only then
that one sets upon the path of life with dreams in one's eyes, hopes
in one's heart and the determination to conquer the world.
mere haatho.n ki garmii se, pighal jaaye.ngii za.njiire.n
mere kadamo.n kii aahaT se, badal jaaye.ngi taqadiire.n
Here is one such young man bearing the 'torch' of life in his
hand, bursting with enthusiasm and aspirations, who is announcing that
he has arrived. The lyrics are by Javed Akhtar, and this
well-respected MD is famous for recycling his Marathi tunes into
Hindi.
*** liye sapane nigaaho.n me.n, chalaa huu.n terii raaho.n me.n
zi.ndagii aa rahaa huu.n mai.n
Film : Mashaal
Singers: Kishore Kumar
Lyrics : Javed Akhtar
Music : Hridaynath Mangeshkar
Other songs from the film:
- mujhe tum yaad karna aur... (Lata, Kishore)
- fuuTpaatho.n ke ham... (Suresh Wadkar, Anup Jalota, Hariharan,
Shailendra Singh)
- holii aayii holii aayii... (Lata, Kishore, Mahendra Kapoor)
[Rajiv Shridhar] :- This is a movie I've always wanted to see, mainly
for Dilip Kumar, but have never been able to.
[Abhay] :- Wow! "MaraaTHa titukaa meLavaavaa, Maharashtra dharm
vaaDHavaavaa" aaNi "kuTHachihi quiz suru karataanaa Marathi MD
waaparaavaa" :-) As ususal, Marathi chauvinism, what else ? :-) :-)
# [ND & Swapna] :- Now _that_ is a comment we did not expect. :-) This
# Marathi nexus between the organizers and the MD was absolutely
# incidental.

2. [68/70]
The best way to enjoy the passage through life is to live for the day,
without a care for the future. For who knows what tomorrow has in
store for you?
chaa.Nd taaro.n se chalanaa hai aage,
aasamaano.n se baDhanaa hai aage
piichhe rah jaayegaa ye zamaanaa
The 'manner' in which this Shankar-Jaikishan number has been
rendered has endeared it to all fans of Kishore Kumar's yodeling. A
tandem version by Asha Bhosle is also quite popular.
*** zi.ndagii, ek safar, hai suhaana
yahaa.N kal kyaa ho kis ne jaanaa
Film : Andaz
Singers: Kishore Kumar / Asha Bhosle
Lyrics : Shailendra
Music : Shankar-Jaikishan
Other songs from the film:
- dil use do, jo jaan de de... (Rafi, Asha)
- hai na, bolo bolo... (?)
- remaamaa remaamaa re... (Rafi)
[Rajiv Shridhar] :- Nice Yodelling by Kishore Kumar. At least there's
no argument about who's best in Hindi films at this.
[Abhay] :- I bet this had 100% "solvency".
# [ND & Swapna] :- Surprize surprize, it didn't... :-)

3. [50/70]
Time and tide stop for no one. Neither does life, it is a road that
one must keep traveling on. There are no overnight halts, no breaks
--- for stopping is synonymous with failure.
vo husn ke jalawe ho, yaa ishq kii aawaaze.n
aazaad parindo.n kii, rukatii nahii.n parawaaze.n
This multi-starrer film, based on a real-life incident about
disaster striking a coal mine, has Amitabh in the role of a disgraced
ship captain. The chorus in this Rajesh Roshan tune draws inspiration
from a hit Dolly Parton number "Shirlene".
*** ek raastaa hai zi.ndagii, jo tham gaye to kuchh nahii.n
yeh kadam kisii muqaam pe, jo jam gaye to kuchh nahii.n
Film : Kaala patthar
Singers: Kishore Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar and chorus
Lyrics : Sahir Ludhiyanvi
Music : Rajesh Roshan
Other songs from the film:
- baaho.n me.n tere mastii ke... (Rafi, Lata)
- jaggaiyaa jaggaiyaa... (Mahendra Kapoor)
- dhuum mache dhuum... (Rafi, Lata, Mahendra Kapoor)
- merii duuro.n se aayii baaraat... (Lata)
[Pintu] :- Whenever I try to hum it (the clue), I end up with, "hoThoN
se chhoo kar tum mera geet amar kar do".
[Ikram] :- I thought that this film was partially based on "Lord Jim".
Have y'all heard anything like that??

4. [62/70]
For some people, there is only one aim in life --- love. They live to
love, and love to live. For them life without love is utterly
meaningless, and therefore they go around telling others how wonderful
it is to love.
dil ko lagaa ke dekho, pyaar me.n kyaa khushii hai
pyaar binaa kyaa jinaa, yeh bhii koii zi.ndagii hai
This cabaret number is from a film in which the hero is the
'ruler of his destiny', but ironically enough, loses out in love. It
is also probably the singular instance of Mahendra Kapoor singing a
triplet with two Mangeshkar sisters.
*** pyaar zi.ndagii hai, pyaar ba.ndagii hai
Film : Muqaddar ka sikander
Singers: Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle and Mahendra Kapoor
Lyrics : Anjaan
Music : Kalyanji-Anandji
Other songs from the film:
- rote hue aate hai.n sab... (Kishore / Rafi)
- o saathi re, tere binaa bhii kyaa jiinaa (Kishore / Lata)
- dil to hai dil... (Lata)
- salaam-e-ishq merii jaan... (Lata, Kishore)
[Nita] :- This song seemed to be out of place in this collection of
good songs, IMO of course. :-)
[The Inimitable Iyers] :- Amitabh with Rakhee --- never could
understand how that could be romantic pair?
[Kalyan] :- A painful film with a great soundtrack.

5. [65/70]
Some people live their entire life in the few moments of love that
they get to experience. Even if these moments are shortlived, it is a
long enough life for them.
do muhabbat bhare dil saath dhaDakate ho jahaa.N
sab se lambii vo muhabbat kii ghaDii hotii hai
With the mellifluous voice of Hemant Kumar and the melodious
compositions of C Ramchandra as help, his expressionless face is no
deterrent to Pradeep Kumar in wooing a beautiful Bina Roy in this
popular love story set in the mughal era.
*** zi.ndagii pyaar kii do chaar ghaDii hotii hai
chaahe thoDii bhii ho ye, umr baDii hotii hai
Film : Anarkali
Singers: Hemant Kumar & Lata Mangeshkar
Lyrics : Rajendra Krishen
Music : C Ramchandra
Other songs from the film:
- yeh zi.ndagii usii kii hai... (Lata)
- mohabbat aisii dhaDakan hai... (Lata)
- jaag dard-e-ishq jaag... (Lata, Hemant)
# [ND & Swapna] :- Practically everyone pointed out the obvious
# mistakes in the lyrics clue here. Hopefully, it was not a deterrent
# to anyone in getting the correct answer. Our apologies, and we
# blame it on the ISB. (UVR, are you listening?) :-)
[Ikram] :- And why does Kalyan not say "A painful film with a great
soundtrack" here?? :)

6. [36/70]
For two people in love, life has no other emotion. The whole world
belongs to them as their hearts are together. Worldly matters ---
especially those of money, have no place in this idyll. After all,
what is life without love?
Asha : sapane puure hue aaj, din phirate nahii.n derii
Kishore: sun o mere hasii.n, aaj ek tu hii nahii.n,
saari duniyaa hai merii
No 'wealth / riches' can ever compensate for a life full of
love --- so proclaims this typical bastii celebration song featuring
Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh.
*** jiina kyaa ajii pyaar binaa, jiivan ke yahii chaar dinaa
dhan daulat binaa chale magar, zi.ndagii naa chale yaar binaa
Film : Dhan daulat
Singers: Asha Bhosle, Kishore Kumar and chorus
Lyrics : Anand Bakshi
Music : R D Burman
Other songs from the film:
- ?
[Abhay] :- Now this I found amazing. I do not remember the lyrics.
Cracked it by your clue "Rishi - Neetu and basti celebration". I have
never heard it after seeing the movie !! It's not a great song, but I
just remember it! And then you put it in your quiz! Wow! It's
difficult to believe that anyone apart from me cares to remember this
movie and thos song. This is really a surprise. I am amazed. REALLY!
BTW I like the tune of the mukhada. Esp the chage of pace and scale
while singing "mile duniyaa to mazaa hai, ki mile dil bhi"!
[Nita] :- I am guessing at the name of the movie from your clue :-).
But I like the song. Specially the line which goes.......mile duniyaa
kaa mazaa hai ki mile dil bhi...
# [ND & Swapna] :- Looks like a popular reaction. :-)
______________________________________________________________________
7. [67/70]
People who discover true love often want to share their happiness with
life itself, just as they would with a dear friend. Their doors are
always open for life to drop by any time. In fact, sometimes they
even provide directions. :-)
mere ghar kaa siidhaa saa itanaa pataa hai
ye ghar jo hai chaaro.n taraf se khulaa hai
na dastak zaruurii, naa aavaaz denaa
A very sweet duet with a lazy-dreamy-voiced singer and an okay
but unpopular Lata-wannabe. This song, which all Jaidev fans like a
lot, tries to bridge the 'distances' by extending a loving invitation
to life.
*** zi.ndagii, zi.ndagii, mere ghar aanaa
Film : Dooriyaan
Singers: Bhupendra and Anuradha Paudwal
Lyrics : Sudarshan Faakir
Music : Jaidev
Other songs from the film:
- zi.ndagii me.n jab tumhaare... (Bhupendra, Anuradha Paudwal)
______________________________________________________________________
8. [12/70]
However, for such blissful lovers, separation is the most terrible
curse. Gone is all the happiness, the world they once owned together
is now but a barren vacuum. Why, even life ceases to seem like life.
tanahaa nahii.n kaTe.ngii, is zi.ndagii kii raahe.n
manzil tab milegii, baaho.n me.n jab ho baahe.n
jab tak rahe, aaja sanam, mil ke chale
Shailendra Singh tried his luck as a leading man in this film
opposite Rekha, but soon 'agreed' to stick to singing. After all,
without love, his life seemed more like a punishment to him --- not
much of a life! Here he is asking his beloved to hear his heart's call
on a beautiful day.
*** jiinaa ye koii jiinaa to nahii.n
pyaar ke binaa, jiinaa bhii hai sazaa
Film : Agreement
Singers: Shailendra Singh
Lyrics : Gulshan Bawra
Music : Bappi Lahiri
Other songs from the film:
- aap ne pyaar diyaa, pyaar se maar diyaa... (Shailendra Singh)
[Ravi Kant Rai] :- I am surprised that you remember Shailendra's film.
I liked the singer. but he was not all that succesful. I also liked
the other song "aapane pyaar diyaa pyaar se maar..."

9. [59/70]
We take for granted the presence of our loved ones so easily. It is
only when someone goes away from our life, that every little memory
comes back to haunt us. Absence it is that makes the heart grow
fonder.
vahii hai Dagar
vahii hai safar, hai nahii.n
saath mere magar, ab meraa hamasafar
Dhuu.nDhe nazar idhar udhar, vahii hai Dagar
The complex tune of this Lata solo marks this clearly as a
Salil Chowdhary composition. But will such a 'small thing' deter you
from identifying this song written by Yogesh?
*** naa jaane kyuu.n, hotaa hai ye zi.ndagii ke saath
achaanak ye man, kisi ke jaane ke baad, kare phir us ki yaad
chhoTi chhoTi si baat
Film : Chhoti si baat
Singers: Lata Mangeshkar
Lyrics : Yogesh
Music : Salil Chowdhary
Other songs from the film:
- jaaneman jaaneman tere do nayan... (Yesudas, Asha)
[UVR] :- SalilC rulezzz! Just listen to the chords in the background
of this song! Wow!
[Rajiv Shridhar] :- Salil Chowdhury and Lata Mangeshkar were an
incredible combination in this one. And the song is not rhythmically
very simple (or melodically, for that matter).

Losing out on one's love of a lifetime is like losing life itself.
Yet, one has to keep going and live by oneself, even though every
moment feels poisoned by the bitterness of the beloved's betrayal.
sanam toD detaa, mohabbat ke waade
agar jaan jaataa mai.n tere iraade
kise maine chaahaa, kahaa.N dil lagaayaa
mai.n naadaan thaa, kuchh samajh hii na paayaa
While this superhit soundtrack launched a much-maligned MD-duo
and an even more maligned singer in the early '90s, the film was the
debut vehicle for two very successful models who didn't do too well as
film stars.
*** ab tere bin, jii le.nge ham
zahar zi.ndagii kaa, pii le.nge ham
Film : Aashiqui
Singers: Kumar Sanu
Lyrics : Sameer
Music : Nadeem-Shravan
Other songs from the film:
- jaanejigar jaaneman... (Sanu, Anuradha Paudwal)
- dhiire dhiire se... (Sanu, Anuradha Paudwal)
- meraa dil tere liye... (Udit, Anuradha Paudwal)
- tuu merii zi.ndagii hai... (Sanu, Anuradha Paudwal)
[UVR] :- IMO, the only passable song in this movie.
[Hema] :- Just as an aside, I once saw an interview of Sameer wherein
he said that the songs of Aashiqui were written by him in his college
days long time back.
[Ikram] :- "Hadd ho gaii, ND & SG" {Copyright violation alert!! :)}.
Why do you want to include KSanu & NS in this quiz?? :) Hmm --- I bet,
it was because you wanted to say "if one intends to live without
KishoreK (and with KSanu), it will be like 'zindagii ka zehar peekar
jeena'." Right?? :)

Life without that special someone isn't quite the end of everything,
one can still go on living. Sure, life goes on -- but again, is such a
life worth calling life in its fullest sense?
tum jo kah do to, aaj kii raat, chaa.Nd Duubegaa nahii.n,
raat ko rok lo
raat ki baat hai, aur zi.ndagii, baakii to nahii.n
Only Gulzar can come up with such multi-faceted lyrics that
evoke a 'tornado' of emotions in the listener. Add to that R D
Burman's fascinating music, and we don't need any more clues for what
is arguably their best-known song.
*** tere binaa zi.ndagii se koii, shiqawaa to nahii.n
shiqawaa nahii.n, shiqawaa nahii.n
Film : Aandhi
Singers: Kishore Kumar & Lata Mangeshkar
Lyrics : Gulzar
Music : R D Burman
Other songs from the film:
- tum aa gaye ho... (Kishore, Lata)
- is moD se jaate hai.n... (Kishore, Lata)
[UVR & Pavan (RaVan)] :- You're saying "tum aa gaye ho" and "is mo.D
se jaate hai.n" are less known than this song? PUH-lease!
# [ND & Swapna] :- Yes, that is quite what we claim. Ask anyone what
# is the most famous song of Aandhi, and pat comes the answer "'tere
# binaa zi.ndagii...'. And oh, there's also 'tum aa gaye ho...' and
# ...". Admittedly the margin is slender, but it is there.

Life is about moving on, taking the good and the bad in one's stride.
The happy-go-lucky person simply accompanies life to wherever it takes
him --- all his problems and worries can go up in smoke.
barbaadiyo.n kaa shoG manaanaa fizuul thaa,
manaanaa fizuul thaa, manaanaa fizuul thaa
barbaadiyo.n kaa jashn manaataa chalaa gaya
You and I, 'both of us' can see that this carefree Rafi solo
is composed by Jaidev and picturised on a cigar-smoking Dev Anand.
*** mai.n zi.ndagii kaa saath nibhaataa chalaa gayaa
har fikr ko dhue.n me.n uDaataa chalaa gayaa
Film : Hum dono
Singers: Mohammed Rafi
Lyrics : Sahir Ludhianwi
Music : Jaidev
Other songs from the film:

- dukh aur sukh ke raaste... (Asha)
- kabhi khud pe, kabhi haalaat pe ronaa aayaa... (Rafi)
[Ikram] :- This Dev doesn't smoke cigars!! El Kapitan smokes
cigarettes. :)
[Kalyan] :- Hum dono surely must have been included in the max no of
quizzes.

Life, as ever and always, goes on. It is not bounded by our world, nor
is sky a limit for it. Little surprize, then, that even you and I have
to keep moving with it as well.

jhuume meraa dil, tumhe.n le ke, baaho.n me.n

Another life is a perpetual motion machine solo by Kishore;
this time it is from an Amitabh film with some conscience and
'integrity'. The MD is Sapan Chakravarty, a long-standing associate of
R D Burman.
*** tum bhii chalo, ham bhii chale.n, chalatii rahe, zi.ndagii

phirate hai.n ye sab alabele, dil leke mukar jaane ko
Dev Anand masquerades as a 'clerk' working for Nalini
Jaywant's father and wins her heart. This film has some delightful
music by S D Burman.

Life is a series of chance encounters --- at every step one meets new

partner, few of these meetings result in a long-term relationship.
dhan ke piichhe, koii bhaage
koii tan kaa, hai shikaarii
man se man kaa, joDe naataa
vo hi sachchaa, hai pujaarii
This fast-paced Kishore-Asha duet is highlighted by an
excellent violin interlude, and a 'pa re pa' chorus that is a
trademark of the MD. From a movie in which the hero resorts to all
sorts of lies to win the affections of his beloved.
*** jiivan ke har moD pe, mil jaate hai.n hamsafar

subah aatii hai, shaam jaatii hai yuu.N hii
vaqt chalataa hii rahataa hai, rukataa nahii.n

Lyricist Anand Bakshi reflects on life in this Kishore solo
set to tune by R D Burman. The movie features the superstar of the
'70s along with Mumtaz. A much-acclaimed hero fondly known as
'Haribhaai' completes the triangle.
*** zi.ndagii ke safar me.n guzar jaate hai.n jo maqaam

can savor its happy moments.
chhoTaa saa saayaa thaa, aa.Nkho.n me.n aayaa thaa
ham ne do, buu.Ndo.n se, man bhar liyaa
This film about an accident victim suffering from amnesia, and
the school-teacher who falls in love with her while taking care of
her, has music by one of the doyens of the South Indian film industry.
Lyrics are by the poet who specializes in filling khaalii bartan with
teardrops. :-)
*** ai zi.ndagii, gale lagaa le

Film : Sadma
Singers: Suresh Wadkar
Lyrics : Gulzar
Music : Ilaiyaraja
Other songs from the film:
- surmayii a.Nkhiyo.n me.n... (Yesudas)
[Nita] :- Yeeeeaaaaahhhhh! Don't tell anyone but I didn't know this
song was from Sadma. :-)))) But I guess the Gods are smiling on me
just now because I heard this song about an hour back before coming to
office :-))))
# [ND & Swapna] :- And that's a surefire way of making us include this

Sometimes life seems to move too fast --- it is over just when we feel
that we have begun to live. This may make us cry in sorrow or complain
in despair, but inspite of that our love for life remains strong.
zaraa ai zi.ndagii dam le, teraa diidaar to kar luu.N
kabhii dekhaa nahii.n jis ko, use mai.n pyaar to kar luu.N
The title of the film containing this soulful Kishore solo is
a word reminiscent of the fleeting, faithless nature of
life. Predictably, the film is a tear-jerker about a terminal cancer
patient (played by Randhir Kapoor). Music is by R D Burman.
*** kabhii palako.n pe aa.nsuu hai, kabhii lab pe shiqaayat hai
magar ai zi.ndagii phir bhii, mujhe tujh se mohabbat hai
Film : Harjaee
Singers: Kishore Kumar
Lyrics : Nida Fazli
Music : R D Burman
Other songs from the film:
- tere liye palako.n se... (Lata)
- jiivan me.n jab aise pal aaye.nge... (Kishore, Asha)
- yeh rut hai hasiin... (Kishore)
- sun zaraa shokh hasiinaa... (Kishore, Asha)
- tujh saa hasii.n dekhaa naa kahii.n... (Kishore)
[Nita] :- I do not watch Randhir Kapoor movies, if I can help it.
Jawaani Diwaani was an exception.
[Prince] :- How is "harjaaee" a "word reminiscent of the fleeting,
faithless nature of life??"
# [ND & Swapna] :- We checked the on-line Urdu dictionary... :-)

Life can be a new challenge at every step, an obstacle that needs to

terii priit se mere jiivan me.n bikharaa sa.ngiit
meraa sab kuchh terii den hai, mere man ke miit
mai.n huu.N ek tasaviir, tu meraa ruup ra.ng hai
This Subhash Ghai flick had Anil Kapoor as a hotshot lawyer,
trying to help his mom Nutan get over her amnesia with this song. But
his bigger 'fight' is against Amrish Puri and his son, debutant Javed
Jaffrey. Meenakshi Sheshadri and Khushboo co-star.
*** jiit jaaye.nge ham, tu agar sa.ng hai

Film : Meri jung
Singers: Lata Mangeshkar & Mohammed Aziz
Lyrics : Anand Bakshi
Music : Laxmikant-Pyarelal
Other songs from the film:
- bol baby bol... (Kishore, Anuradha Paudwal)
- ai mere khwaabo.n ke... (Anuradha Paudwal)
[Nita] :- A watchable movie. Like watching Javed Jaffrey's dancing in
it more than Anil Kapoor's antics in the court room. :-)
[Suneeta] :- I just can't seem to remember the song. :( I know it is a
piano song. There is a telugu version of the song too.

There are many things that motivate man to live --- be it wealth,
ambition, power, love or anything else. Sometimes, though, it's just
someone's lovely and lively eyes that make life worth living for.
tasviir banaaye, kyaa koii, kyaa koii likhe tujhape kavitaa
ra.ngo.n chha.ndo.n me.n samaayegii,
ra.ngo.n chha.ndo.n me.n samaayegii,
kis tarah se itanii su.ndarataa, su.ndarataa
Possibly the only film starring Rajesh Khanna and Feroze Khan
together, this unusual love triangle epitomizes the meaning of life as
a 'journey'. The Kalyanji-Anandji soundtrack contains another
must-have solo for every Kishore Kumar collection.
*** jiivan se bharii, terii aa.nkhe.n

Other songs from the film:
- zi.ndagii kaa safar... (Kishore)
- jo tum ko ho pasa.nd wahii baat kare.nge... (Mukesh)
- ham the jin ke sahaare... (Lata)
- nadiyaa chale chale re dhaaraa... (Manna Dey)

The paths of life can also lead to a set of compromises. Sometimes,
such unfortunate and inexplicable circumstances can even force apart
two people who were quite close to each other.
paayaa tumhe.n to ham ko lagaa tum ko kho diyaa
ham dil pe roye aur ye dil ham pe ro diyaa
palako.n se khvaab kyo.n gire, kyo.n chuur ho gaye
Sounds tough? Maybe by sticking 'together' we can solve this
clue from a film that had Farouque Sheikh and Deepti Naval; and many
wonderful gazhals sung by Jagjit and Chitra Singh.
*** kyuu.n zi.ndagii ki raah me.n, majabuur ho gaye
itane hue kariib ke ham, duur ho gaye
Film : Saath saath
Singers: Chitra Singh

Other songs from the film:
- yeh teraa ghar yeh meraa ghar... (Jagjit, Chitra)
- tum ko dekhaa, to yeh khayaal aayaa... (Jagjit)

The forces of life are often beyond our comprehension or control.
Sometimes, they literally push one around this way or the other,
giving one's life a feeling of utter helplessness, desolation and

sapano.n ke devataa kyaa,
tujhako karuu.N mai.n arpaN
patajha.D kii mai.n huu.N chhaayaa,

This Lata Mangeshkar solo from a Rajesh Khanna - Asha Parekh
musical superhit aptly captures the plight of the heroine who pretends
to be a widow to gain shelter, but falls for the charms of the hero.
*** naa koii uma.ng hai, naa koii tara.ng hai

- yeh jo mohabbat hai... (Kishore)
- aaj naa chhoDe.nge ham... (Kishore)
- jis galii me.n teraa ghar... (Mukesh)
- pyaar diwaanaa hotaa hai... (Kishore)
[UVR & Pavan] :- Ho-Hum! What a dull 'n' drab song!
[Abhay] :- This is an SJ tune ! So uncharacteristic of RDB.

Why do we want to attach labels to everything, or treat it as some big
deal? After all, it is just life --- it has everything that life
should have. Some sunshine, some shadows. Some moments of sorrow, some
of happiness.
ye naa socho is me.n apanii, haar hai ki jiit hai
use apanaa lo jo bhii, jiivan kii riit hai
ye zid chhoDo, yuu.N naa toDo, har pal ek darpaN hai
A very gentle Laxmikant-Pyarelal composition that transports
one to the 'home of the beloved'. The film has Anil Dhawan and Jaya
Bhaduri in the lead roles.
*** ye jiivan hai, is jiivan kaa
yahii hai, yahii hai, yahii hai ra.ng ruup
Film : Piya ka ghar
Singers: Kishore Kumar
Lyrics : Anand Bakshi
Music : Laxmikant-Pyarelal
Other songs from the film:
- ?
[Nita] :- I relied on your 'home of the beloved' clue to get to this
song.
[Snehal] :- This brings tears to my eys. It was really great time in
1970s -- my childhood passed with such great numbers. What can I say?
'Koi Lauta De Mere Bite Hue Din' .... Thanks for including this one.
[Pradeep] :- One of LP's all-time best!!

24. [42/70]
It has been humanity's eternal quest to understand the meaning of
life. One tries to derive one's own deductions based on what one sees
and knows from experiences. And to some, there is life to be
understood even in its simple joys --- the gentle twinkle of a star,
the vivid colors of a flower, the company of a friend...
tum mere saath ho, mai.n tere saath huu.N
woh zamiin saath hai, aasamaan saath hai
A song very unusual for RJGKs, as it is not from a regular
movie. The film was an immensely popular television movie featuring
Kumar Gaurav as the illegitimate son of Anupam Kher. It was made by
Mahesh Bhatt for Doordarshan in the late '80s. This Amit Kumar solo
finds 'birth' as the theme song for the film, and plays in the
background on a number of occasions throughout the movie.
*** zi.ndagii, zi.ndagii, zi.ndagii
kab tum ko dekhaa hai, kab tum ko jaanaa hai
Film : Janam
Singers: Amit Kumar
Lyrics : Amit Khanna
Music : Ajeet Verman
Other songs from the film:
- ?
[Rajiv Shridhar] :- "TUM mere saath ho, mai.n TERE saath huu.N" - ye
kyaa ho rahaa hai? Why do people have to go from TUM to TERE? If the
objective was to make the words fit, the lyricist could have just as
well used "tuu mere saath hai, mai.n tere saath huu.N"... "... tujhako
paanaa hai, ye tujhako paanaa hai.." still makes sense.

Finally, what is life? For some, it is a song of love that is in every
heart. For others, it is an ocean of sorrows that one has to swim
across with a smile. Ultimately, life is what we make of it.
zi.ndagii ek musakaan hai, TuuTe dil kii koii aas hai
zi.ndagii ek banavaas hai, kaaT kar sabako jaanaa paDegaa
This Kishore-Lata duet has music by Usha Khanna. Tina Munim
and Padmini Kolhapure vie for Rajesh Khanna's affections in this hit
Saawan Kumar film on issues related to bigamy.
*** zi.ndagii pyaar kaa giit hai, ise har dil ko gaanaa paDegaa
zi.ndagii Gam kaa saagar bhi hai, ha.Ns ke us paar jaanaa paDegaa
Film : Sauten
Singers: Lata Mangeshkar & Kishore Kumar

A related info. I once saw Majrooh Sultanpuri's interview on DD in
which he said that O.P.Nayyar asked him to write a song for a tune and
as he (Majrooh) listened to the tune, he hummed "sun sun zaalima pyaar
hamko tumse ho gaya/dil se mila le dil mera/tujhko mere pyaar ki kasam".
OPN liked the song, but Majoorh said its wrong because there is no sense
in saying hum and tum and then "tujhko" and "mere". OPN then told him
that the people won't even care and this sounds like a very good song,
so lets keep it the way it is. The rest is history.
